Hello Everyone, My friends and I have been bored during this quarantine so we started a blog where we post about DFS and today we’ve posted our first Horse Racing article. We’re big fans of the sport and are excited to launch this. We’d love to hear thought on how the article turned out and if you find it helpful. https://gameondailyfantasy.com/2020/04/17/count-fleet-apple-blossom/
An English movie about 3 or 4 guys obsessed with betting on horse races at their local betting place. Get info about a sure thing and get tangled with some gangsters....From at least 4 years ago or so.
I've been trying to think of this movie to recommend it to a new friend thats movie obsessed. We both thought it was a guy Ritchie movie initially but it isn't. Its bothering the crap out of me. There is a severely tense scene where they are upstairs in a bar across from each other before chaos ensues.
Best place to find info on any daily horse/races that are commonly found on Bovada betting?
New to horse betting... the races on bovada seem more or less obscure(minus the big ones). Is there any place that has info on these horses that run in this race? best way to increase my edge? (got my first trifecta and superfecta right, so that was fun)
First | Prev | Next Discord Valentine The pain in my shoulder kept rousing me from sleep, and damn did I ever need the rest. I'd get an hour or so of sleep, and then something would happen to tweak my shoulder. I'd roll over, or move reflexively to brush away an itch, and I'd be brought reluctantly to wakefulness. It's not that I was uncomfortable. In fact, this 'hotel' as Wallace called it, might be one of the most luxurious buildings I'd ever set foot in. The furniture down in the restaurant, for example. The quality there, in just one of the pieces, was astounding. It was difficult to get fabric to take dye consistently, to achieve a uniform colour. As such, it was often the upholstery that was of particular prestige, making quality pieces often the centre of a noble's living room. Not only was every piece of furniture in that restaurant of such quality, everything matched. It was as if some sort of perfect automaton had fabricated each piece. And that was to say nothing of the carpentry and metalwork involved, which were similarly astounding. Then there were the sheets I'd wrapped myself in. It wasn't quite the same as silk, silk had a more sultry quality, and this felt somehow more wholesome. It was more like a warm hug than a- well, than any of the sorts of things I usually got up to when tangled in silk sheets. And with Wallace sleeping nearby, his long steady breaths providing a comforting rhythm, and his scent lingering on the air, I found that I felt safer than I had in a very long while. Not safe, there was a reason I still kept a pistol nearby, there remained a long way to go for true safety, but I was safer. I only wished I could enjoy it, to bask in the warmth from the pile of blankets, and luxuriate in the feeling that I didn't have an immediate looming threat breathing down my neck. The problem was, my gods damned shoulder would not stop hurting. I tried to find a position that wouldn't aggravate my injury, but despite my best efforts, still couldn't stay asleep for more than an hour at a time. Finally, angry, bored, and still very tired, I kicked off the blankets in a fit of pique. Of course, that only hurt my shoulder more, and I grit my teeth to keep from waking Wallace with a pained gasp. I frowned, the steady rhythm was gone. I snatched a sheet and held it to my chest. With some difficulty, I sat up and peered over the edge of the bed. Wallace had left. Which meant he'd woken up. Which meant he'd noticed me sleeping on the floor next to him. I sighed. I had been hoping to be gone before he woke, though I wasn't sure what I was trying to hide. That I trusted him? He probably figured that out about when I was huddled naked in the bath. I wish he'd woken me, we could share breakfast, and I'd follow his explorations, but damn I was tired. I slithered into the bed, still warm from his presence. I curled up in the middle of the bed where the warmth was the greatest and settled in among the blankets and piled pillows. By some magic, the mattress shaped itself to fit my body, and I quickly found a position that didn't set my shoulder aflame. The heat made me drowsy, and in renewed comfort, saw little reason to fight it. I had little idea of the time that had passed when I finally woke once more. I only knew that the hollow and tired feeling had abated, and the sun still had not yet risen. I considered laying there for a while longer. Perhaps I'd doze off again, but thought better of it. I was curious about what Wallace had been doing, had he returned to the room, only to leave me to sleep in peace? Perhaps, but it was a large building. Likely he wasn't finished exploring. I pushed myself up, found my torch and pistol, and wrapped myself in one of the sheets. So covered, I slipped back across to my room and dressed in the sleeveless shirt and legless trousers I'd worn to dinner. I'd worn the ensemble to dinner out of exhaustion, after all, getting into the flight suit was a bit of a bother at the best of times, and I didn't feel like attempting it with one arm. I'd expected Wallace to make some remark, maybe blush a little. I'd even had a biting retort ready for the occasion, but he didn't protest my lascivious dinner wear. It seemed not to register to him. I found I quite liked Wallace, which was quite the novel experience. I'd always seen company as something to be avoided unless I'd paid for their time. How strange it was then, that I hoped Wallace would stay once I'd finished teaching him what magic I knew. With him possibly anywhere in the massive building, I intended to track him by scent. Sleeping several hours in his bed had made that tricky, however, and I had difficulty separating the scents present in the environment from those clinging to me. I could get an idea of where he'd been, but was unable to tell how long ago it was. As it seemed he'd spend the hours I was asleep searching the entire building, I found myself doing the same. I struggled to find a single room that did not have at least a trace of his scent within. It made me regret leaving my necklace behind, but it wouldn't be safe with my shoulder still healing. That said, I'd only checked the first floor, and I could already feel myself growing faint as I gazed at the door to the stairs. I am going to make that man carry me back down here. Just pushing open the heavy metal door- the humans take security seriously it seems -made me feel dizzy. I put my hands on my knees and took a few deep breaths to steady myself before continuing. I woke to the taste of blood in my mouth, a brutal headache, and the reek of fear. I shifted a little and blinked my eyes open, and I heard a sigh of relief. "Oh thank god, please, just don't move." I came to realize that Wallace was holding me in his arms, a little too tightly, as he was making it difficult to move my head. "Wallace," I grumbled drowsily, "Let me go." "Valentine, just- please, for fuck's sake." I met his gaze, and my anger softened as I saw the concern in his eyes. He looked like he'd just seen me die. "Okay, okay," I soothed. Wallace calmed a little as the sickly scent of fear was gradually replaced by the musky scent of my pheromones. With so much skin uncovered, the effects should have taken hold much more quickly than they did, but at the very least it didn't appear as if his heart were about to stop. Wallace took a deep breath, "In first aid- for humans -the number one thing, the most important thing unless someone is gushing blood, are head and neck injuries. " I placed my palm gently against his chest, "It's okay," I finally understood what had him so shaken, "Fey are different, we're not so vulnerable to getting bumped on the head." "You're-" he began, but I put a finger to his lips before he could interrupt. "I know a thing or two about treating injuries, Wallace," I insisted, "I learned all sorts of things about head injuries, but us fey are not like anyone else. If we were, every noble house would have a pile of dead servants who fainted trying to carry the lady's tea up the stairs." Wallace gently took my hand away from his lips. He held gently onto my hand, our hands clasped loosely across my chest. "I thought you were dead," he said flatly, "I pushed open the door, and here you were on the landing, limp as a corpse and white as a sheet." "This isn't the first time I've fainted trying to climb the stairs," I sighed, "I just need a little air." I gave a little yelp as Wallace gathered me up and rose to his feet, and quickly threw an arm around his neck to steady myself. I squirmed around until I was in a more or less sitting position. The motion made my head throb, and I rested my head against Wallace's chest while I squeezed my eyes shut against the pain. I'd made it almost to the roof, following Wallace's scent, but that was damning with faint praise. It had been easy to figure out where he'd gone off to once I was in the stairwell, as his scent was present throughout, but the climb had been brutal. To any other fey, my ascent through the building would seem supernal. But to the humans who'd constructed the building, doubtless to Wallace as well, I must have seemed pitiful. Wallace elbowed the bar across the door, which shifted slightly, and he ducked out onto the roof. I shivered as the cold air brushed across my exposed skin, and tried to press closer to Wallace. It got awfully chilly during The Long Night, and I was a little underdressed. The roof was altogether more pleasant than that of the 'gas station', as Wallace had called it. There were several cushioned benches scattered about, some small trees here and there, and a few flower beds set against the low wall that ringed the rooftop. Someone, indeed, likely several someones, had gone to some effort to make the space as pleasant as possible. "What happened to your jewellery?" Wallace asked, his voice low, though I could feel the bassy reverberations in his chest. "It's not safe to use while I'm healing," I shivered, "So I'm useless until my shoulder is mended." "You're plenty useful," Wallace insisted, "You teach me magic, and I'll carry you around wherever you want to go," he promised. He carried me over to one of the benches and took a seat. He let go of me, but I didn't take the opportunity to slide off his lap. Instead, I snatched a nearby blanket and pressed it into his hands. He took it, an amused expression on his face, and helped me settle it around myself. With it trapping the heat, it felt like I was sitting with my cheek resting against a furnace. Between his natural scent and the all-encompassing warmth, I felt myself growing drowsy once again. I pulled the blankets tight around myself and peered up at him, "Maybe I'll ride you around like a horse," I giggled, "Did Temerity get to ride you around too?" He immediately turned red, his lips set in a thin line as he tried not to break out into a guilty smile. "Oh, she did, she did!" I hooted, "Were you face up or face down? The girls at The Blushing Maiden have given it to me both ways, so I can see the appeal in either case," Wallace turned, if it were even possible, a yet darker shade of red, "Now that I think about it, Temerity does seem the sort to take the initiative. Face down then." Wallace's guilty smile turned to a grimace, but there was grudging mirth in his eyes and the twist of his lips. I prodded him in the ribs, "You're not even the tiniest bit angry," I asked incredulously, though it was more of a statement. I pressed my nose against his chest and inhaled deeply, "I can't smell a whiff of anger. If I were a servant, anyone else would be having me flogged right about now to correct my mark against their honour. Or as a noblewoman, they'd be looking for a father, brother, or husband to duel." He sighed, a wry, grudging smile on his face, "Humans used to be like that," he admitted. I frowned in thought, "Now that I think about it, I don't believe Simon has ever challenged anyone to a duel. And gods know people have tried to goad him into it." "Why, to try to get rid of him?" Wallace guessed, "Seems like a losing proposition if it's fey versus human, even if he doesn't go all Super Saiyan on them." "Super Saiyan?" I inquired. Wallace covered his face with his hand, "The body magic thing he does." "Oh, well, you're right. Magic isn't allowed, though that can be hard to enforce. But it's the privilege of the challenged party to opt for a champion to take their place. Usually a sprite, or now that there are other races in the city, a goblin or elf. But it matters little," I explained, "Simon seems genuinely ambivalent to even the most grievous insult made against him. At first, it led to him losing a great deal of respect within the city, but once it was clear he didn't care about that either, I think he was able to turn it into a strength. That said, it's not as if he doesn't get even with those that oppose him. Typically when a nobleman of the city goes after Simon, he'll find that a wife or daughter will have mysteriously fallen for the human interloper," I thumped Wallace on the chest, "Simon's playroom isn't quite as well soundproofed as Temerity's though, I understand that most of the manor, along with anyone out on the street, can hear when Simon is taking the initiative with a new paramour," I put a hand to my chin, as if in thought, "Now that I think about it, that must be some serious soundproofing in Temerity's place, I mean, you must be awfully lou-" Wallace, very gently, but very firmly, put his hand over my mouth. "Shhh." I shrank inwards a little and nodded. At first, I'd been needling him just to see what it would take to get him to strike me. Humans were still an enigma to me, and I found that people were generally easier to deal with if I knew where the limits were, but now I realized that the greater risk would be making the big mushy goliath feel hurt. He took his hand away, and I pulled myself up to plant a kiss on his cheek, before sinking back down to nestle against his chest. "You're an okay bodyguard Wally." "Thanks, Vally," he replied wryly, "Have you got your daily allotment of teasing me in? Can we get to adult stuff?" I rolled my eyes, "Val will be fine, and what is it?" "Well," he began, pulling down the blanket a bit so I could see out into the night, "I picked this bench for a reason, are you able to make out that light in the distance?" "No, can you-" Wallace covered both the torches, and I waited as my eyes adjusted to the darkness. "Maybe?" I said finally, "I might just be seeing what I want to see though. I take it you're more confident?" He nodded, "It's a campfire. It's way the hell out there, but it's a fire." "Probably surveyors from Caniforma," I guessed. "Are they going to be a problem?" "Perhaps," I admitted, "They might eventually find a route here, but surveyors tend to guard their discoveries jealously. Unless you know who to ask, it's not easy to even learn where to buy such information, and that's to speak nothing of the price. No, they're not likely to pose a threat. That said, if someone is truly determined to come after me, they likely could reach us." "You mean someone might pull the same stunt we did," Wallace realized. I pulled the blanket back up over my head and relaxed against the big man. "Yes. And while we had to spend a day getting through the pass, the proximity of the mountains offers possibilities to the determined." "You mean someone might try to make their own little rest stop by climbing up far enough? Would that even work with horses?" "Doubtful," I replied, "But if it came to it, they could abandon the horses to the tide, and sleep out the night partway up some convenient cliff." "Hmmm..." he rumbled quietly, "Just trying to think through the timeline here. So the horsemen, horsewomen, horsepeople?" "They were riders, not centaurs," I huffed. "Whichever, point is, they left late. After all, we left late, and they left even later after that. So we'll assume whoever comes after us has time to prepare, and are down the ramp from the city at first light." "Not a simple task," I interjected, "There are special carriages that carry horses down, and even if they've planned to have those ready, the descent is yet slower than it was for us." "Okay, fair," Wallace agreed, "But it does mean that, compared to the riders we ran into, they'll be further along at any given point in time." "Fair," I agreed. "Which pushes their point of no return forwards, I don't know, six hours?" he guessed, "That might be a bit generous, but we should prepare for a best-case attempt from them." "They also won't have spent several hours searching an alien neighbourhood for us," I added. Wallace nodded, "Which means they get even further. Now include the fact they've got a safe return that's a lot closer... yeah, I bet they could make it. Fuck they'd be tired though." "I wouldn't worry about it for now, Wally," I assured him, "I have a hard time conceiving of a more defensible position than what we have now. We'll have time to ready ourselves. Besides, they know not what they face at the end of their journey. I don't expect to see them in the next Long Night, perhaps the one after next at the earliest," I peered up at him from beneath the blankets, "Plenty of time for you to learn some magic." Wallace beamed and seemed to tremble at the mere word, and it gave me a little thrill to see him smile like that. I thumped my hand against his chest again, "Carry me inside, feed me some breakfast, and we can get started." Wallace pursed his lips, "What was that you said, something about protecting you but not taking care of you?" I narrowed my eyes, "You're not taking care of me, you're pampering me. "As you wish, your highness," Wallace replied wryly. Still bundled up in the blanket, Wallace brought me back inside through a different staircase. Rather than functional metal railings and hard stone steps, this staircase was thickly carpeted, and the hardwood railings were stained a rich dark brown. Wallace shouldered his way through the door at the bottom of the stairs, and I somehow found myself in a room that was even more luxurious than what I'd seen below. Now that wasn't to say that every surface was engraved, gilded, and studded with gemstones as it might be in a royal's palace. The humans who'd built this structure seemed to have a preference for understatement, and instead of displaying wealth with precious metals and rare stones, it was with quality materials. Again, I was astounded by the uniformity with which the carpets and furniture upholstery were dyed. The elves could do work that was nearly this good, but it wouldn't be uniform over such a large area, and the reagents they used to fix the dyes had an unfortunate scent. It looked to me that the top floor of the entire east wing was dedicated to this single set of chambers. Well, perhaps not 'chambers', as the designers seemed not to have believed in walls. Where they were needed, they were either glass, as the exterior walls were, or did not rise to reach the ceiling, and served simply to break up the sightlines and provide a little privacy. Oddly enough, the kitchen seemed to be displayed proudly, rather than being out of sight, hidden back in some servant's area. I wasn't happy to see the harpsichord, in what would be the sitting room, had it been a separate room. There was also another of those black glass slabs that humans always arranged their furniture to face. There had even been several in the restaurant below, arranged so that no matter where one sat, a slab could be seen. This one was the largest I'd yet seen and was nearly as wide as I was tall. The deference shown to the objects suggested some religious significance, and it occurred to me that there had been something similar in the house we'd looted before leaving the human neighbourhood. The materials hadn't been quite the same, and the glass slab at the front had bulged outwards rather than being perfectly flat, but there as well, the furniture had been arranged to face it. "This is the penthouse," Wallace explained, "I wanted to wait until you were up to ask your thoughts, but I think we should start moving our stuff up here. The stairs are a problem-" "It'll be fine once my shoulder is mended," I assured him. Wallace shrugged, and set me down on one of the wide upholstered and high-backed benches in the sitting room, "There's also some conference rooms through there," he went on, nodding towards the central spine of the building, "so there's space for us to work if we need it." I stretched out on my back while Wallace went over to the kitchen to root through the cabinets. "Is that what's atop the other wing?" I yawned. "No, the conference rooms are near the elevators, probably for fancy people to have fancy people meetings," he called back, "The other wing is a presidential suite, so I guess this is an American hotel." "American?" "Uh, it's another country from Earth," he explained, "But the language is the same, and I'm familiar enough with the units they use to measure things that it's not a problem," I heard the cabinets shut. A moment later, Wallace was peering over the side of the couch, "I'm gonna go out on the balcony and cook, you stay out of trouble till I get back." "I'll try, no promises." With both of us properly fed, I had Wallace join me in the sitting room and drew him down next to me on what he called a 'couch'. While he'd been busy cooking, I'd poked around the penthouse, looking for something to use for our first magic lesson. I'd found what I'd needed in the bathroom- a bathroom that was larger than some commoner's homes -a box of hairpins. I took out just one of the pins and handed it over to him. It seemed comically small in his enormous hand, and he held it between forefinger and the odd not-quite-thumb, not-quite-finger that was his extra digit. "I can do magic with just this?" "Yes and no. The first thing to understand-" I began. Wallace beamed, and threw his arms up in the air, "First law of magic!" I sighed, but couldn't help but share his smile, "You're just a child on the inside, aren't you." "We're all children on the inside," Wallace replied, "and we're all just pretending otherwise." My smile turned to a smirk, as I considered what I might do if I wasn't trying to keep up appearances as a noblewoman. And the truth was, it wasn't as if I put much effort into such appearances. "Are you going to let me teach you magic," I prodded, "or are you going to keep sharing your philosophy?" "Alright, alright, what's the first law of magic?" "From a single object, you can only get one type of mana," I recited, "There are exceptions, but for the time being, one object, one type of mana." Wallace frowned and stared intently at the hairpin, "That doesn't exactly make sense." "What about it troubles you?" "The exceptions. Physical laws don't tend to have them." "Wally, which one of us is teaching and which one is learning right now?" "I know, I know, but I also spent two decades in one type of school or the other," he insisted, "Newton's laws of motion, the laws of thermodynamics, Euclid's postulates, they mostly don't have exceptions." "Mostly?" I repeated, "So then they do have exceptions, why is it so strange then-" "That's just it," he exclaimed, "Thermodynamics, that's sacrosanct. Pretty sure even magic doesn't violate that no matter how hard you try. But Euclid's postulates and Newton's laws of motion, those are different. Euclid had five postulates. The first four are simple. I mean simple enough that they're a single sentence that a kid could understand. I mean, the first one is that you can draw a straight line between any two points, really simple stuff. But Euclid was trying to explain the very fundamentals of geometry. His problem, and hell, mathematicians worked on it for hundreds of years after him, was his fifth postulate. He was trying to describe the fundamentals behind parallel and non-parallel lines, and it was kind of clumsy. He couldn't quite get the phrasing to be as neat and tidy as the other five postulates. And not just him, like I said, plenty of genuine geniuses worked on the same problem, and couldn't figure it out. See, the truth was, there was a deeper understanding that wasn't known," he paused, I think he'd noticed that my eyes were starting to glaze over, "Um, remind me to tell you about non-euclidean geometry some time. The point is, the way he was trying to describe how parallel lines worked, didn't always apply. But he couldn't even conceive of how it didn't apply. It was as if he was blind to it." "And you think the same is true for magic?" I said slowly, as I digested his speech. "Yeah, and you know what," Wallace said confidently, "This is exactly the sort of thing Simon would recognize as well." I felt a sudden tightness in my chest, not fear, but excitement. Wallace had already been able to provide some hints, but now it felt as if I were finally starting to draw the curtain aside. "This Newton, what was his mistake?" "Well the thing to remember about Newton, is that he was a genuine genius. I mean, he couldn't figure out the equations necessary to track the motions of planets, so he invented a new type of mathematics. He was one of the first guys to lay out a set of laws that could begin to describe the way the physical world worked. It's more complicated than that, and others added to his theory to build Classical Mechanics, but there's a reason that Classical Mechanics is sometimes referred to as Newtonian Physics. The trouble was, there were areas where his theories broke down. But like Euclid, it broke down in ways he couldn't conceive of. It worked for apples falling from trees, and planets orbiting stars, but not, for example, black holes, nuclear weapons, and spaceships trying to travel faster than light." "I feel as if I say this frequently in your company," I told him tiredly, "but pardon me?" "Newton's theories worked at the scales that most people can conceive of. From the very smallest bit of dust, all the way up to the most very massive stars. As for velocity, it covered the stationary, all the way up to objects travelling more than a hundred thousand times faster than a speeding bullet." "What else is there?" "Exactly!" he exclaimed, "It took another two hundred years for a guy named Einstein to come along and invent General and Special Relativity, which explained how things smaller than motes of dust, larger than the largest stars, and nearly as fast as light worked." "I still don't think I understand quite what you're saying, but I take it, that it is enough to know that there was more to know than Euclid and Newton could fathom." "Exactly," Wallace agreed, "So, what are these exceptions to the 'one object, one mana type' rule?" "Gemstones, air, and liquids. Raw gemstones can be cut in such a way as to provide two of the available mana types at once. Garnets, for example, provide four mana types, Metal, Body, Strengthen, and Protect. When it is faceted, the jeweller selects any two of those, and from then on, those are the only two mana types that the garnet may provide. Indeed, the caster must use both types, for any spell that includes the garnet. As for air and liquids, neither can be said to be a single object. With liquids, typically one must use the entire container unless it's something like a spellcaster dipping their hand in a lake or river. That's typically only something experts can do though. Most spellcasters will simply scoop some up in their hand or the like. Air presents the same difficulty, experts can simply use it directly out of the space around them, but most Air magic users will carry glass bottles of various sizes." "So say I wanted to use this bobby pin," Wallace suggested, "I'd need to use the whole thing, and only for one of its available mana types?" I nodded, and then Wallace bent the pin until it broke into two halves, "And now this is two objects, so I could use what was a single bobby pin, for both mana types in a spell?" "Yes, that was the puzzle I'd intended you to solve," I admitted, "I sense you're unhappy with this answer?" "I am," he agreed, "I don't know how the 'one object one mana type' rule is wrong, but it's wrong. What if I had two pins, or let's say I just use both these halves. These are metal, so they've got Metal mana? Okay, so could I use both halves for Metal mana, and then some third object for the other mana type I need?" "Yes," I said slowly, "I suppose that's the second rule. Controlled magic always takes two types of mana, attempt it with a single type, and only the gods know what will happen." "Alright, well I'm gonna think on rule one. It feels kind of like a 'blind men and the elephant' situation." This time I just threw up my hands. Wallace grinned sheepishly, "Sorry, have you ever seen an elephant?" "Yes," I replied, more than a little exasperated. "Coles notes-" he began, and I gave him a dangerous look, "Sorry, simple version is, one blind guy puts a hand on the leg and thinks an elephant is like a tree. Another feels the trunk and says it's like a big snake, so on and so on." "You're clearly very intelligent, very learned. It's a shame you hide it behind a veneer of utter madness." "We can argue about who's crazier later," he chuckled, "So we've got the first rule, 'one object, one mana type', and its exceptions, and the second rule, 'one or more verbs, and one or more nouns, or bad things happen'." "Then there's the final rule, and it applies to the case you suggested, using both halves of the pin for Metal mana. Steel is a Greater source of Metal mana. It doesn't matter how much steel you have, it will only ever be a Greater source. The quantity of steel instead determines how long the Greater source persists." "Is there a number for greater?" he asked, "What's the scale?" "I've yet to hear anyone use numbers to try to describe the difference between various mana sources, or at least, try and succeed in coming up with anything that makes sense. No, the scale is Minimal, Lesser, Moderate, Greater, and Significant." "Hold on. Actual metal is only the second-best source of Metal mana? How does that make sense?" Wallace demanded. I shrugged, "Only gemstones are a Significant mana source, metals are typically Greater, not just of Metal mana itself, but of whatever other mana types that metal provides as well. Copper provides Greater Fire, for example." "Hmm, seems kinda weird that it's the most powerful sources of mana that are best known," Wallace mused, "I would have thought it'd be the other way around." "There are commonly known rumours about colours and herbs both supplying either lesser or minimal mana of a great many different types, but I've yet to hear any specifics." "How are new types discovered then? Even if most people get the info second-hand, someone would have had to be the first." "It's tricky," I warned, "And I don't even know if the method I know of is the safest way to do it, but typically one takes a material with a known mana type, and the material they want to understand and attempt to cast a spell. Either the caster can guess at what mana might be present in the unknown material, in which case things proceed as with any normal spell." "And if they get it wrong?" Wallace grimaced. "If they get it wrong," I continued, "Or simply try to cast a spell without trying to guess what mana types might be present, then nearly anything can happen. The proto-spell uses the selected mana from the known material and a random mana type from the unknown material, and chaos generally ensues." "I'm guessing it's generally a good idea to use small quantities then?" Wallace offered. I nodded, "Anything to limit the potential damage. Transformation magic and Body magic are the worst. Fire magic, to be sure, may cause severe burns if the caster is unlucky, but Healing magic can correct something as simple as an injury. But a body, malformed by magic, is nigh-impossible to correct." I took his hand in both of mine. It was soft but strong, and large enough that my thumbs didn't quite meet in the middle. "Promise me you'll listen, and promise me that you won't go experimenting on your own," I urged him, "This is dangerous, and there's only so much I can do. If I were any good with healing magic, I would have fixed my shoulder already. I understand your excitement, but before we continue, I need your word that you'll listen when I warn you something's dangerous." "Alright, I promise," he assured me, "If I come up with anything crazy, I'll talk to you first." "Thank you, the other thing I should warn you about is that this isn't going to be easy. I don't want you to feel discouraged if it doesn't work right away." I didn't want to sabotage him by telling him just how hard it was to cast a spell for the first time, but I also didn't want him giving up. I'd seen both extremes in my time. Some would give up after trying and failing for weeks, while still others would hear such tales and internalize the assumption that they'd never be able to do it. I was by no means a magic tutor, but those I was familiar with had spoken of striking a balance. It was essential to warn would-be spellcasters of the difficulty, without making it seem insurmountable. Magic was a science of the mind after all, and if someone got the wrong idea in their head, it often made their magical journey a great deal longer, if it started at all. "Everything is hard until you figure it out," he replied, "I'll be patient." "First," I began, speaking softly, "Close your eyes, once you get more familiar with magic you won't need to, but for now it can help to focus the mind." He did as I asked, and I let go of his hand to pick up the box of bobby pins. "The spell you're going to cast will give you an invisible hand, that can pick up only metal. Steel contains Earth, Fire, Metal, Movement, and Protection mana. You're going to use the Metal mana from one half of the pin, and the Movement mana from the other to create this hand," I shook the box so he could hear the pins rattle, "Then you're going to use that hand to pick up some of these pins." Wallace nodded, an oddly tranquil expression on his face. "Now. Magic requires you to hold two different understandings of the world in your mind. First, there's the world as it is now, where you're holding two halves of a broken pin in one hand. Second, there's the world as you will it to be, where the halves of the pin are gone, and you have an intangible hand, capable of only manipulating metal. Now I understand that might not make much sense," I admitted, still speaking softly, "But think of it as there being two worlds. There's the mental world as it exists within your mind, and there's the physical world, as it appears to everyone else. Take your time," I said soothingly, "Don't rush yourself, the important thing is to-" There was a metallic rattling, and then the pins were floating above the small box, as if cupped in an invisible hand. I leapt to my feet, astounded at what I saw, "Wally, that's amazing!" I exclaimed. Wallace was not so enthused. He had his eyes open now, but there was an unexpected sadness in them. "Seems I'm uniquely suited to this," he muttered dourly. "What's the matter?" "Nothing, just the universe reminding me that I'm a freak." "Who cares?" I demanded, "What you just did takes most people weeks or months, you're a freak? Wallace, I would cut off my arm to be a freak like you. You're an enormous slab of muscle with indestructible bones, a supernatural talent for magic, and this is just a guess, but someone your size is also probably hung like a horse." He immediately turned red and brought a hand to his face, but I went on unabated, "Who cares, if I had a body like yours, I would revel in it. The strength, the power, I would need to run from nothing. And what you said about your body making muscle no matter how lazy you are? Gods, I would eat as much as I wanted, drink whatever I liked, and bed whoever I fancied," I shook my head slowly, "But you don't conduct yourself like that. I would have searched out some shapely elf noblewoman, one that was easier to handle than Temerity, to act as patron and paramour while I ate and drank and fucked the days away," I spread my arms, and gazed down at my scrawny frame, "But instead you're here with me, because I need you, and because you have a good heart." "Well," he said slowly, "Thanks, I guess," he said with a bland shrug. I growled and prodded him in the side. I wanted it to hurt, but I think my shoulder ended up worse off than his ribs. At the same time, I bore down on my pheromone glands, forcing out as much of the rage pheromone as I could muster. "You don't think I know you get angry sometimes? Really really angry?" I demanded, "When we lost that pack, gods, I didn't think the scent of anger could be that thick. And then in the tunnel when you were trying to get through that metal cover, the smell was so strong I thought I was going to faint." I wiped my brow with the back of my hand. It wasn't sweat. Instead, I was giving off so much of the pheromones that it was beading on my skin, and making my clothes and hair damp. "But you didn't lash out at me, or anyone else. Who cares if you get angry? It happens, what matters is what you do with it. You're a good person, with a good heart," I informed him, "But time to time you need someone to slap you upside the head and get you on the right track, that's all." He chuckled at that. There was enough rage pheromone in the air now that he should have long since bashed my head in, but instead, he was laughing. He raised his hands, "Alright, alright, you've made your point. Now could you please tone it down? If I have to put up with this for much longer, I'm gonna burst a blood vessel." I switched to the opposite pheromone, and couldn't get much out before my glands ran dry, but it was enough to neutralize the rage pheromone in the air. I put my hands on my knees and took a deep breath, I don't think I'd ever pushed myself that hard, and I was surprised to find it left me so exhausted. My legs felt like jelly as I stumbled back over to join Wallace on the couch. "If you're done feeling sorry for yourself," I huffed, "I can finish explaining magic," I offered. "Go ahead, what's left?" he asked wryly. Continued in comment
updated. TL;DR2 at the end. Basically i think i'm doing what a lot of non-fiction authors do: re-writing something that's already been written about in order to try and make sense of it. --- (long and rambling post, sry, but hopefully there's something worthwhile in here) consider:
Aeruh, I command the air. Lay leaden on your tongue.
Aru is the rune for clay
also this from the Tor Q&A:
Q: Are the 3 words (a) Aerueh (where tinkers find polished horns, mentioned once in NoW), (b) Arueh (where fine dark ink is made, mentioned 3 times in WMF) and (c) Aeruh (the word Haliax uses to command the air to bind Selitos, in NoW) connected in any way (other than being spelled similarly)? A: Ah hell. That’s a typo. A and B should be the same thing. They’re referring to a place. I’ll have to fix that in the later editions of the book.
---- Let's start with clay - a few irl references via wikipedia
In Greek mythology, according to Pseudo-Apollodorus, Prometheus molded men out of water and earth.
so yeah. and we know that PR is pretty well-versed in mythology, and also that KKC is (after a fashion) an hommage to/commentary on/reinterpretation of various mythological/religions traditions. to continue - a closer look at breath and clay (some of this will be a recap from other posts):
According to Genesis 2:7 "And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul".
The Māori people believe that Tāne Mahuta, god of the forest, created the first woman out of clay and breathed life into her.
there's also a version of the Prometheus myth:
But, as yet, there were no mortal men until, with the consent of the goddess Athene, Prometheus, son of Iapetus, formed them in the likeness of gods. He used clay and water of Panopeus in Phocis, and Athene breathed life into them.(here)
similar, but this time it's the wind:
There was also an account, stating that Prometheus had created men out of earth and water, at the very beginning of the human race, or after the flood of Deucalion, when Zeus is said to have ordered him and Athena to make men out of the mud, and the winds to breathe life into them (Apollod. i. 7. § 1; Ov. Met. i. 81; Etym. Mag. s. v. Promêtheus). Prometheus is said to have given to men something of all the qualities possessed by the other animals (Horat Carm. i. 16. 13). (here)
the Prometheus version is especially interesting, consider that Prometheus also stole fire from the gods and gave it to humans Felurian says:
“long before the cities of man. before men. before fae. there were those who walked with their eyes open. they knew all the deep names of things.”
so men/humans were created at some point Clay = adamah (Hebrew for "ground, earth, clay"), as in Adem, Edema furthermore, wikipedia says:
Adam (אדם) literally means "red", and there is an etymological connection between adam and adamah, adamah designating "red clay" or "red ground" in a non-theological context. In traditional Jewish theology, a strong etymological connection between the two words is often assumed
and then there's the Adem concept of vaevin/anger
“All things that live have anger. It is the fire in them that makes them want to move and grow and do and make.”
--- here are a couple interesting moments:
Elodin stopped and turned to face me on the stairway. ... He stared at me for a long minute. He looked me up and down as if I were a horse he were thinking of betting on, or a side of beef he was considering selling by the pound. But that was nothing compared to when he met my eyes. For a heartbeat it was simply unsettling. Then it almost felt like the light on the stairway grew dim. Or that I was suddenly being thrust deep underwater and the pressure was keeping me from drawing a full breath.
consider that when Kvothe tells Elodin the Felurian story, Elodin makes the Adem hand gesture for amazed respect (i.e. he's been to Ademre), also
Magwyn made another circle of me...then stopped in front of me and looked me fully in the eye. Her eyes were like Elodin’s. Not in any of the details. ...the similarity was in how she looked at me. Elodin was the only other person I had met who could look at you like that, as if you were a book he was idly thumbing through. When Magwyn met my eyes for the first time, I felt like all the air had been sucked out of me.
not sure what to make of this yet, but we've got a constellation of things:
irl myths of clay + breath = life
Adamah = clay similar to Adem and Edema
Namers evoking a sensation of stopping breathing (or in Lanre's case, binding the breath)
Egyptian god Khnum ...[created]... humans from clay, on his potter's wheel, seated next to the goddess Hathor (left), who is imparting the breath of life into the clay figures by pointing the ankh [i.e "key"] at their nostrils.
An inkstone is a stone mortar for the grinding and containment of ink. In addition to stone, inkstones are also manufactured from clay, bronze, iron, and porcelain.
The earliest excavated inkstone is dated from the 3rd century BC, and was discovered in a tomb located in modern Yunmeng, Hubei.
(Barrow Hill, anyone?) all of which brings us finally (!) to Denna:
“Is there a type of magic that’s just . . .” She wiggled her fingers vaguely. “Just sort of writing things down?”
and the Kvothe/Chronicler exchange:
Kvothe came back up the steps carrying a small clear bottle. “Is there anything else you need? I have a good stock of paper and ink here too.” “It may come to that by tomorrow,” Chronicler said. “I’ve used up most of my paper. But I can grind more ink tonight.” “Don’t put yourself to the trouble,” Kvothe said easily. “I have several bottles of fine Aruean ink.” “True Aruean ink?” Chronicler asked, surprised. Kvothe gave a broad smile and nodded.
on this last point in particular, see this fine post by u/-Yuri-: https://www.reddit.com/KingkillerChronicle/comments/8n8dd8/magic_of_writing_things_down/ --- TL;DR: nothing exactly earth shattering here -- mainly this is an attempt to dig deeper into the connections between (a) Aerueh (where tinkers find polished horns, mentioned once in NoW), (b) Arueh (where fine dark ink is made, mentioned 3 times in WMF) and (c) Aeruh (the word Haliax uses to command the air to bind Selitos, in NoW) and let's add (d) Aru, the rune for clay all of which probably have some relation to the ability to "breath life into matter" aka animate the inanimate, which also has something to do with the writing magic Denna is seeking. and for the frosting, let's listen to Pat pronounce Edema Ruh --- edit: a couple more things... (please keep the breath of life into clay idea in mind)
Felurian's "before men, before Fae" was mentioned above.
Mommets can be made with blood and clay. (Kilvin: "E'lir Kvothe could not have hurt him with just a candle," ... "Not with hair and wax. Maybe blood and clay")
In Jewish tradition, the golem is most widely known as an artificial creature created by magic, often to serve its creator. The word "golem" appears only once in the Bible (Psalms139:16). In Hebrew, "golem" stands for "shapeless mass." The Talmud uses the word as "unformed" or "imperfect" and according to Talmudic legend, Adam is called "golem," meaning "body without a soul" (Sanhedrin 38b) for the first 12 hours of his existence. [...] Other sources say once the golem had been physically made one needed to write the lettersaleph, mem, tav, which isemetand means "truth," on the golem's forehead and the golem would come alive. Erase the alephand you are left with mem and tav, which is met, meaning "death." Another way to bring a golem to life was to writeGod'sname on parchment and stick it on the golem's arm or in his mouth. One would remove it to stop the golem.
TL;DR2: Maybe humans in KKC were created by combining all the Aru-s: clay, air, + Aruean ink:
make a clay mommet
write the appropriate rune tattoos (blood, bone, etc.) on it using Aruean ink

Spotlight on Nike: Nike will post its FQ4 report with more uncertainty in the air than almost any time before due to the lack of formal guidance from the company. The two biggest pullouts from the report are likely to be the pace of recovery in China and the momentum of the e-commerce business. Nike is one of the companies seen by Wall Street as in a strong position on the other side of the pandemic. "We see Nike as favorably positioned for both secular fitness/casualization trends and industry structural changes that benefit those with strong direct engagement with consumers," notes bullish-leaning Wells Fargo ahead of the print. Stocks that quite often move right along with Nike on earnings day include Foot Locker (NYSE:FL), adidas (OTCQX:ADDYY), Under Armour (NYSE:UAA) and Dick's Sporting Goods (NYSE:DKS). WWDC: Apple will hold its annual developers conference on June 22-26 in a virtual format this year. Bank tests: The Federal Reserve will release results of the annual bank stress tests on June 25. Fed Vice Chair Randal Quarles noted that the test this year includes running banks up against three possible economic trajectories of varying severity to see how they perform due to the unprecedented uncertainty about the pandemic. The test will see how banks perform against a rapid V-shaped recovery, a slower U-shaped recovery and a rough W-shaped recovery. The test results could factor in to dividend decisions down the road for Bank of America (NYSE:BAC), Citigroup (NYSE:C), Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) and JPMorgan (NYSE:JPM), while Capital One (NYSE:COF) and Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) are seen being pushed under the scenarios. Traders are making plays based on the results, with a notable amount of bullish options bets being placed on Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC). Other conferences of note include the SVB Leerink CybeRx Series CNS Forum, BMO Chemicals & Packaging Conference, Wells Fargo Bricks to Clicks Digital Conference, Goldman Sachs Leveraged Finance Conference and the Morgan Stanley Zero Trust Architectures Virtual Thematic Conference. On the smaller side of the conference schedule, the mining and metals sectors will be in focus, with John Tumazos Very Independent Research virtual meetings set for June 23-24 on Wheaton Precious Metals (NYSE:WPM), Western Copper and Gold (NYSEMKT:WRN), KORE Mining (OTCQB:KOREF), Amarillo Gold (OTCQB:AGCBF), Sierra Metals (NYSEMKT:SMTS), Foran Mining (OTC:FMCXF), Wolfden Resources (OTC:WLFFF), Trilogy Metals (NYSEMKT:TMQ) and Adventus Mining (OTCQX:ADVZF). Ford F-150: Ford has a digital reveal event for the all-new F-150 set for June 25. The Ford team is expected to describe innovative features of the all-new F-150, including the new electrical architecture, a flat-lying passenger sleeper seat and over-the-air updates to key modules controlling vehicle performance and user experiences. The new truck is seen as a critical part of Ford's plan to slash $5B in warranty costs and push the automaker's vehicle connectivity platform. As a profit generator, the F-150 launch later this year will also help restore the company's balance sheet. The all-new Ford F-150 will be discussed by execs in detail during a June 26 conference call with Citi Research. Deurbanization trade: Expect more talk from analysts next week about which sectors and stocks could benefit if the mega-trend of people and businesses moving out of downtowns of major cities becomes a reality. Jefferies got the ball rolling last week by singling out Home Depot (NYSE:HD), Lowe's (NYSE:LOW), Best Buy (NYSE:BBY), Floor & Decor (NYSE:FND), At Home (NYSE:HOME), Williams-Sonoma (NYSE:WSM) and Wayfair (NYSE:W) as retailers that could gain from an uptick in suburban living and more spending on houses than metropolitan apartments. One of the bigger pure plays is Tractor Supply (NASDAQ:TSCO), which has racked up a 64% gain over the last 90 days. RVs: Keep an eye on the RV sector with May shipment numbers due out from the RV Industry Association. Demand is expected to be on the rebound after RV shipments fell 82% in April. Looking ahead, there is a difference in opinion on Wall Street on the outlook for Winnebago (NYSE:WGO), Thor Industries (NYSE:THO), Patrick Industries (NASDAQ:PATK), LCI Industries (NYSE:LCII) and Camping World Holdings (NYSE:CWH). Some firms like SunTrust Robinson Humphrey expect a RV boom as consumers gravitate toward safer vacations, while Bank of America has warned that the high rate of unemployment and salary cuts could keep discretionary spending in check. Sports betting: Time is running out for the California Assembly to pass legislation on sports betting to move the issue to the November ballot. The bill has to pass through the legislature before June 25 to become an election issue. Why is it a big deal? California is forecast to have the potential for a +$30B sports betting market through sports books placed at tribal casinos, horse racing tracks and satellite wagering facilities. "California could easily become one of the most productive sports-betting markets in the world," observes gaming analyst Chris Grove. Tax revenue from sports betting would also help the Golden State with its budget issues amid the pandemic and economic downturn. Stocks of interest in relations to how sports betting in California plays out include DraftKings (NASDAQ:DKNG), William Hill (OTCPK:WIMHF), MGM Resorts (NYSE:MGM), Caesars Entertainment, Fanduel (DUEL), Red Rock Resorts (NASDAQ:RRR), Boyd Gaming (NYSE:BYD) and Wynn Resorts (NASDAQ:WYNN). Casinos: The Nevada Gaming Commission is meeting on June 25 to likely approve amendments to state regulations that would streamline the process for moving to modern payment methods. The casino industry in general wants to quickly adopt cashless payment transactions on the casino floor due to the risk of handling cash during the coronavirus outbreak. The casino reset could have implications for Visa (NYSE:V), Mastercard (NYSE:MA) and American Express (NYSE:AXP), as well as financial apps from Apple (AAPL), Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG) and PayPal (NASDAQ:PYPL). Casino operators like MGM Resorts, Wynn Resorts, Caesars Entertainment and Penn National Gaming (NASDAQ:PENN) would also welcome the change. What's not playing: Warner Bros.'s (NYSE:T) feature animated film Scoob! will stream on HBO Max on June 26 after running in a premium video on-demand window. The children's picture was first scheduled for theaters on May 15 before opting for a 48-hour rental PVOD period price of U.S. $19.99. While Scoob! didn't make quite the splash that Trolls World Tour did in the spring when it nabbed $100M in digital sales over three weeks, it's another incremental step away from the traditional studio release format for major studios like Sony (NYSE:SNE), Universal Pictures (NASDAQ:CMCSA) and Disney (NYSE:DIS). As for theater chains, auditoriums are likely to operate at 25% to 50% capacity as AMC Entertainment (NYSE:AMC), Cinemark (NYSE:CNK), IMAX (NASDAQ:IMAC), Marcus Entertainment (NYSE:MCS) and Reading International (NASDAQ:RDI) open back up this summer. Notable annual meetings: Companies with virtual annual meetings set next week include Ollie's Bargain Outlet Holdings (NASDAQ:OLLI) on June 22, Dave & Buster's Entertainment (NASDAQ:PLAY) on June 23, Keurig Dr Pepper (NYSE:KDP) on June 24, At Home Group and Tailored Brands (NYSE:TLRD) on June 25. Barron's mentions: The publication digs out four industrial companies whose stocks are called compelling. Midsize manufacturers RBC Bearings (NASDAQ:ROLL) and Wabtec (NYSE:WAB) join large-caps Emerson Electric (NYSE:EMR) and Ametek (NYSE:AME) on the short list of economy recovery picks. Of the four, Wabtec trades with the lowest forward PE ratio at 14.2. Brunswick (NYSE:BC) is also singled out this week as an advantageous product-mix shift and rising boat demand are seen helping to drive shares higher. Most of Brunswick's profit is derived from the high-margin Mercury engine business. The rally in tech names hasn't encapsulated the entire sector. Attractive names still trading at less than 4X sales include Western Digital (NASDAQ:WDC), CACI International (NYSE:CACI), Leidos Holdings (NYSE:LDOS), Seagate Technology (NASDAQ:STX), Amdocs (NASDAQ:DOX), Ciena (NYSE:CIEN), Accenture, MKS Instruments (NASDAQ:MKSI), Intel and F5 Networks (NASDAQ:FFIV). The cover story this week hits on the rising inequality issue in the U.S., noting that it can be a breeding ground for all kinds of concerning things for the market like secular stagnation.
Chapter seven Ok this is definitely Jasnah. I can't believe i missed this until i read the TOR preview comments to see what people thought at the time. So obvious now! This is gonna be a record of her time in Shadesmar. Quite long if this is simply the prelude😂 but i didn't think she seemed to think it was that bad in the WoR epilogue. Well. We know Kal and Kel would get along with their affinity for punching😂 Uh oh. Is this quick escape time?😬 Well it's refreshing to see Kal learning and not backsliding. However i don't think Syl's gonna disappear over a well deserved punch! Oof. Kaladin is flexing authority and these men don't know what to do. To see Roshone squirm is brilliant. Ok Lirin. You can stop treating Kal like a child now! If that carries on its gonna frustruate me. He's changed beyond recognition almost since he left. Wow. Well. That's certainly one way to shut Roshone up. Why did his father seem ashamed almost? I'm worried about what Hesina is gonna say when they know everything about him being a radiant. Wait. They just disappeared? Odd. Funny too cus i been saying they kinda just disappeared at the end of WoR but i meant it metaphorically! Yeah i bet the books don't get used much! Roshone doesn't seem the extremely educated type! Big bones and taller. Interesting. I didn't realise the transformation affected their height. I'm definitely leaning towards the listeners not being full voidbringers and them going to a collective point as part of the hive mind. A place for Odium to prepare his army. Sounds like Kal is gonna be separated from everyone for the rest of the book. Chasing down the Parshendi. Ok Roshone you know its in service of the king, so how is it robbing?! Ooh Laral. I've been wanting this reunion for a while. Omds.😂 Kal handled that awfully. It was funny to see the awkwardness haha. What are the bets Roshone is gonna try and take the blade. I mean look at him. Transfixed. But good for Kal for cuttin him down to size. Where are they gonna get the building materials from?! Ooh Laral. Yayyy. Wait, she's engaged to Roshone? That's so sad. Yeah the queen in Kholinar has been going pretty crazy apparently. Hopefully we figure out more of what's going on there. Wow. It seems like she barely acknowledged Kal's past with her. So formal. Oh my goodness. This is quite the reaction. What's made her like that? Is she truly happy with Roshone? I highly doubt it. So why react this way. Such fire. Nut Kal does have a tendency to feel like he needs to protect everyone and burdens himself heavily. Its gonna break him again someday I'm sure. Well at least Syl likes Laral. Good start. Yeah don't outgrow yourself Kaladin. Remember where you came from. Doesn't help when the people treat him as something precious to be feared. Well, you can't take the surgeon out of Kal! Still got it in him. Maybe even better than his father now it seems. It seems a little idealistic to accept the inevitably of war and not accept your son being a part of it. Kal was never a surgeon. He was a protector. Surgery was one way to do that, but now he's found his higher calling. I know it'll be hard for Lirin to accept but i hope he eventually comes around. I don't want him to hold grudges against Kal for leaving. Those two had a special relationship. To see it broken would be quite a blow. I wonder if war LITERALLY does something to men's souls in the cognitive realm. I suppose it would form part of a someone's perception of themselves. Hmm. I don't remember watcher at the rim forming part of Dalinar's visions. Well that was pretty stiff from Lirin. Its gonna take time. But i think he will grow to accept. Oof. This is what his mothet tried to tell him earlier but Lirin stopped him. I wonder what it is. Well that's certainly handy they managed to get a few stormlight infused gems from the recent highstorm. Like the radiant Stump in Tashikk. Although Lift never did get to these gems did she. Ooh what are the bets its the same ardent who dealt with Lift in ED. Fun little easter eggs. Good to have the main protagonists communicate and i suspect this is the start of Kal's main quest for the story. Chase the Parshendi. And idk what he's gonna find but it won't be pretty I'm sure. I wonder if we will come across the exiled ones or if they changed too. I'm still unconvinced they are the voidbringers of legend and i really want a definitive answer on this soon! Oh shit. That's who took his room! Omds this is so cute. A young baby brother. I can totally understand why he broke down. Its such an emotional time. Oroden. I like it. The meaning of the name is very special. It definitely fits. Wow. I'm struggling to take it in haha. That was definitely unexpected. Wait so he just wasted gems buying the horses and gave them to that asshat Roshone? Bit of a waste. Well that cat's out the bag now. I mean it wasn't a giant leap to make to consider it a desolation. I would've imagined the devout among them would've been shouting about it before now tbh. And like father like son eh. He doesn't want to leave when there's people he could protect. I bet ya Lirin will die saving someone. And that would be nice because that's what he would want. Although i wish he doesn't die yet! This totally feels like an ' I am Iron man' moment here lol. Is this a waste of stormlight doing this when he has so little? Maybe but its freaking cool so that's fine!! Ooh yayy. Hesina didn't accuse Kal of heresy or something! I didn't really expect her too, but we know what she taught Kaladin when he was a boy so she could've done. Good that Kal can trade spheres and won't be stuck lol. Would've been a boring plot arc if he was probably 😂 Omds. This is totally Sanderson's ' now let's go hunt some orc' moment. I can see the glee on his face now. He does a lot of one liners like this so well. I love it. Also, how are we 78 pages in, haven't met Shallan really yet, and i still feel as if I only just started! Enjoying the pacing on this so far. Chapter eight : A powerful lie Ooh speak of the devil! Let's catch up with our favourite matricidic and patricidic killer!! Back with the lies again it seems 🙄 i didn't find her flashback story too engaging. So far the Dalinar ones seem better. And the Kal ones were really good. Just never fully clicked with the Shallan ones. The suspense of what would be revealed wasn't there with me the same as in WoK or now in OB. I'm looking forward to seeing the ghostbloods pop in again. We love a good secret society. Another sketch too yayy. Looks like pattern on top of the Urithiru tower eh. Cool stuff. Cannot wait to see the hardcover in all its glory. Not really any new info in this epigraph. Least it doesn't seem that way to me! Well Shallan drawing? Oh my goodness me. Well i am EXTREMELY suprised 😂 Yayy Pattern. I love thee so much. It would be a tough choice between Syl and Pattern and Wyndle tbh. The stormfather can be left out of that contest😂 Aww. She blames Pattern. That's so sad. Omds I'm actually really sad about that. Wow. Must hurt a lot to be reminded each time she has to use the oathgate. But come on Shallan. You gotta face the truth sometime. Damn shame that stuff isn't there. The books and stuff. I look forward to having a deep dive into the history and lore of Roshar to answer the many mysteries we have. Aha! Its suddenly clicked why Pattern is at the top of the tower in the drawing! Cus he keeps distracting Shallan lol. Well, at least Shallan says she doesn't hate Pattern. But if she hates the sword, when she needs it, things could be tricky. I'm not overly excited for another book of Shallan being torn apart by the same past again. Just when you think she's conquered it, she learns she killed her mother and its back allllll over again. Hmm. This Brightlord Hatham is very clever clearly. And will hold immense power as stormlight becomes rarer. Gonna have to watch out for him i bet. Is brightlord brooding eyes Kaladin? Ooh i suppose calling her an Elsecaller is effective against most of their enemies but the Ghostbloods at least know exactly who Shallan is so that effectiveness is muted there. I guess when you've been told of the horrors of radiants your entire life and then they return, you're gonna be wary. I don't blame the soldiers at all. Man i wonder exactly how Jasnah's return will be reacted to. I hope we see more of her and Wit journeying together 😂 make a right pair they do. Shallan could just use her lightweaving as she did in WoR. But then i guess that would be a waste of precious stormlight. Aha! There's that classic Shallan wit right there! Love me some of that. I feel like there's so much more to Urithiru than we understand. The design very purposeful. But for what is the q. Also, we never did find out how Szeth knew it was here did we. Strange that. Unless I'm totally forgetting 😂 Lol. I'm assuming this is a quirk of the bond with Pattern. I find it funny how Shallan doesn't even realise why she recognises the patterns in the rock. I love all the references back to ED which makes it relevant but not neccessary, even if it is heavily reccomended. Renarin tho. We gotta find out what's going on with him. Also, where's ma bridge four already!! Tezim. Is that that crazy dude they mentioned in ED and said they wouldn't want him in Yeddaw? Don't they still have Steen and Desh? I forgot that Dalinar still doesn't really know Shallan so her humour can be quite abrasive😅 Oh Adolin. Don't change😂 the glare Dalinar gave just had me giggling haha. Aww Renarin. How cute. But omds don't say he isn't Dalinar's kid. No that would be so sad. Maybe it's what turns him into Odium's champion 👀 Huh. What did Dalinar do to Shallan there? Was his spirit tugging at her? But he doesn't have a cognitive shadow. Wtf. Woaahhh. That's soo cool. So it's become like a 3D map now. Wow. But how did she do that? Is it because she is more powerful now she's on her third ideal? Think its her third anyway. No way haha. The stormfather granted Dalinar's wish using Shallan's radiant powers? How does that work. Did we ever get the answer as to whether crypticspren are more of honor or cultivation? Gotta get to the oathgates to open them first mate! Gonna take a long time and stormlight that is. Hatham really is one to watch out for i bet. Fuck. Why did Renarin have that reaction? No no no. Don't be Odium's champion. I wanna be right but i also don't cus poor Renarin. Don't go to darkness. Ooh hello. Let me guess, the Azir oathgate is Lift's ticket into the story. Least i hope so! Ooh ooh Shinovar. Will we unlock some of the mysteries finally. Ngl i didn't even know Babarthanam was a place on Roshar!! Or Rira. Rall Elorim though. Yikes. We heard bad things about that place didn't we. Only good thing is Lift living there! Hope we discover more about Amia and the Amians sometime. Maybe not this book. But after ED i am definitely curious. Oof Kholinar. Just what shit is going on down there! We gotta find out after all this teasing. Oof, well that was unexpected!! Onto the next chapter! I swear this better not have as great a cliffhanger!! Chapter nine - the threads of a screw Oof what moment and what decision. So much teasing haha. I need more!!! To understand even a little of what it's about. Reminds me of Marasi a little haha with all the talk of women being allowed to do something they normally wouldn't. Uh oh. Bridge four tension? Or maybe its just gonna be framed on B4. Nooo. That's sad. All that stormlight and the cool 3d map disappeared. Sad times. Uh oh. Don't tell me Adolin is involved in this one too! So Lift has language and Shallan has memory. I wonder what the other extra abilities are for the others. Ooh Rlain. We gotta learn more of what hapoemed with him. Jeez. Why is Renarin such a creep all of a sudden. Something is definitely wrong with him. Oh Adolin. This is a tricky situation. I'm looking forward to see you get out of this one! Renarin knows. The little freak knows. He saw with his truthwatcher skills i bet. Where's his spren even? We've not seen it have we. Shallan is very suspicious. I bet she's gonna be the one to discover it was Adolin. He's kinda fucked himself with his reactions here. Fucking Renarin man. Stop sending out the creep vibes dude! What the hell are you up to? Well I'm glad it didn't end on as much a cliffhanger as the last chapter! Time to sleep now but excited for tomorrow. Longer chapters so it may only be one as i have work. Have fun in the comments!
3 Ooh hello. This isn't Lift! So who is this mysterious character. Well we have a name! Hauka. I'm assuming Tallew is some sort of grain. For some reason my dumb ass thought it was the city name till i checked and it was Yeddaw! That's what i get for reading late last night haha. Aiming to read it all today. If i can. Liaforan. I like that. Idk why. Its satisfying to say😂 I had to look at the Roshar map online and i gotta say i didn't even know it was a thing until this. Yeah this farmer is corrupt as shit. But he isn't hiding anything so where does he get it from?! Lovely to see they're as snobby and classist as the rest of Roshar and indeed Earth. Its awesome that its a realistic society but also its kinda sad that still these prejudices exist in the fantasy realms. Although it can sure make for interesting politicking! Ooh lunch. That's made me hungry now! Nun Raylisi and Tashi. I don't remember these before. Interesting. And they're enemies. Hmm. Raylisi and Rayse. Sorta sound similar. Tashi and Ishar? That's the only similar sound i can think of. Although we did have a similar dynamic between the brother gods in the purelake religions. But why could Tashi only protect them in Tashikk i wonder. Ooh is this the result of Taravangian's meddling?! Seems like everyone is gearing up for war.Who is the god king of the Tukari? And looking at the map of Roshar, Tukar is where that city Lift mentioned was and what Kal saw in his vision! Seems like there's more to that location than we know right now. Briefly skimming WoK ch 46 i now see the reference to Sesemalex Dar with the long troughs and war nearby. It seems these wars have been going on a long time or Kal saw a vision of the future and I'm more inclined to the former. Wow. Nasty guy taking advantage of the war. Humble farmer my ass. Good the money will go to supporting refugees. Unpredicted highstorms mentioned again. Very clearly things are changing with the weeping, a foreshadow of the everstorm to come! Hmm. I wonder why no open flame is allowed in the city. Yeah farmer. Just take the deal! Haha that's the way for Lift to make an entrance! But easily missed if you dont spot it, it is said she looks eleven or twelve. And we know she might have started growing. So I'm thinking this is a cheeky little reference! Wow. That smuggler really is a nasty son of a bitch. Hates refugees. Pancakes!! I can certainly sympathise with Lift's motives here haha. Ok i just read the entire sequence here cus it was soo funny and engrossing plus theres not loads of reactions from within the whole thing so imma just cover the whole chase sequence. I had scenes from ratatouille in my mind weirdly when reading this! Iove it. Such pure boundless energy and humour for all the family. Love a good bit of slapstick, and when the two guards both reached and tripped it reminded me of thomson and thompson from Tintin!! And then when Lift released all the grain to the refugees, it was brilliant! Hillarious and doing good in the world! What this black dust is i have no clue. Reminded me of white sands actually! Ooh but i suppose it could be Wyndle when the crystals fade to dust. Probably is that. 4 Handy reminder about Lift being partially in the cognitive realm. What the hell happened in her past? Was that why she was able to stay young but then now the cognitive realm is changing cus of Odium and that's why she's changing? Omds i just imagined Lift using Wyndle as like an Indy style whip and now my brain is just thinking about what if you invested a whip with breath. That would be amazing to have like an Allomancer Jak style character with an invested whip. Someone totally needs to suggest this to Sanderson!! I find it interesting they praise various gods and Heralds. Like not all just one. I suppose its probably a mixed bunch of Rosharan refugees which makes sense. Oof. Bavland is totally being had right there haha. Seems like their morals are a bit askew😬 Minutes?!! Wow these people are starving. More than Lift! Although she should be awesome enough for a bit now eh. Sure sure Lift. Trying to pass it off as self care but we all know you've got a kind heart. Alm or Desh. Man I am having to refer to the Roshar map a lot! Lift has been about!! Woah. A roof tile? Lift my dude, what posessed ya! Oooh so Zawfix is relatively close to Urithiru. That's cool. But boy Sanderson is working hard to get as much worldbuilding in as he can!! Yeah I'm still curious why the storm water doesn't just totally flood the place! I hope the everstorm doesn't destroy all the shanties for the refugees, although i can't hold out much hope i don't think. I love this vibrant feel of this quarter. It makes me think of the local poorer quarters in lots of third world countries which often can be filled more with colour and life than a lot of western cities. Yeah i gotta say I'm with Wyndle on this one lift! Funny sequence but unnecessary energy wastage. Haha Wyndle back on his gardening rants again. Love it. Wait is that Ym? Is this confirmation he is an edgedancer?! Well, was 😬. he did have rewgrowth so we knew he was an edgedancer or a truthwatcher. But could it be someone could have the potential to bond with more than one order? Danger from the west. Well west of there would be Shinovar. Are they talking about Szeth? Oh Wyndle. You really should be more careful what you say. I suppose he will have to get her to say the words eventually but if he doesn't want to become a shardblade, he doesn't have to be so obvious about it! Although luckily for him, Lift just dismisses it as Voidbringer nonsense! Ooh that's kinda cool how Wyndle reads. Lift feeling a little claustrophobic eh. Well.i suppose the rich people of Yeddaw have wanted to quarantine the refugee quarter so to speak. Interesting the crem change as you go west. What's up with that?! Well if they want to sneak in/out it could be very useful Wyndle. I'm assuming the Grand Indicium is some kind of policing headquarters or something. Of course Lift would knock a lady by accident! Run!!! 5 People always turn anything into a miracle! Which devalues actual miracles!! Woah so she doesn't remember her mother. Just like Dalinar doesn't remember his wife. Is this because she crossed to the cognitive so lost some of the memory like the spren do coming the other way? But then that would hint at Dalinar having some sort of cognitive connection. Oof my brain is alive with all these theories!! Aww its so sad to see a 10 year old, well 13 year old, so happy and relatively carefree, feel such things as a loss of personal identity. 6 Ok i don't have a storming clue what was just said but i assume Wyndle will be getting a translation! Ah yeah i remember Hauka talking about trading info. I like people who value information. Aha. So a fire is why they dont allow open flames in the city. Makes sense! Yeah i can imagine if the patterns of storms become permanently irregular it could cause a lotttta problems for those who rely on stormlight for trade. Good thing they have info to share! Huh. What are keenspren? Not heard of them before. I assume it isnt spren who show up when someone is keen to do something cus that would be a bit odd. Ok i definitely feel like that was investiture linked. The ability to speak slang. It sounds similar to Connection from Mistborn E2. Curious indeed. I love the little quirks Brandon puts in like this. The gems on strings makes it easy to keep track of though i guess. And yeah I'd definitely lose the little gem fragments lol. Lift ALWAYS manages to bring it back to food haha. Ah yeah i see how it is. The ruffians can use the back entrance, unworthy of the city nobility and wealthy. A flat wide face? For some reason I'm struggling to imagine that. And Wyndle notices it too so maybe there's some kind of condition I'm not recognising. Idk. Ooh a mysterious woman. We love mysterious peoples. It means mysteries and plot movement! I'm guessing she's abandoning the kid. Poor kid. With the scar too. Goodness knows what he's been through. Well done Sanderson, painting the realities of orphanages. Not some happy clappy paradise for kids to share. Often they have mental health issues once they grow up and struggle to fit in. Definitely not what some people think they are. Oh my. The hair. Oh no that's so sad. :( Haha Lift always manages hilarious descriptions of people! Well she wasn't too helpful! But three meals is better than nothing! And she has her reasons. Ok an old man or beggar in a story. Is this Hoid?! He did kinda just start talking out of nowhere talking about it being difficult to handle everyone's problems! Yes Lift. You are extremely Awesome! I would love to see her vs twig face haha. The Stump huh. What a name that is! I think I'd rather be called the rock or something else if I'm gonna be compared to something stoic like that! Hmm. That's definitely odd. What's up with this sphere trading. Something underhand is going on. Ok this question is classic Hoid. Its gotta be him. I'll eat Wayne's hat if it isn't! Haha i like Lift's answer. Too good haha. Ooh an appointment with whom?... lets find out!! 7 Yikes. Either one of those scams is very dodgy. I must admit i didn't have a clue about what was going on with the money exchange but laundering makes total sense. Ha Wyndle, spend a bit of time with humans and you'll realise there are many shits like that taking advantage of people. What a profound statement. Emotions are indeed a very powerful and dangerous tool as we can see in the world today. A strange little horse with with horns. A bull? But that wouldn't be little. Lol. Hang on white and horns? If it only had one it would be a unicorn! Eeek. Lift better survive the everstorm i swear. Don't want her dying Sanderson!! Aww poor Hauka. Rough day eh. Well maybe Lift can improve it for ya :) Does nobody notice an adolescant girl climbing up the apartments?!! Such attention to detail with all the flora and fauna in the worldbuilding. Love it. What a beautiful sight that would be i imagine. The spheres lighting up the slots. Lift clearly has some sort of idea of something going on here. But what? Haha yes Wyndle, i think many of us often find ourselves in the same awe at the scrapes she gets herself into! I wonder if this is a generic reference to nightmares or if there is actually something in her future that terrifies her when she sees it in her dreams. Guess we'll find out more in book 6 when we see Lift's flashbacks! Haha Lift. Welcome to bed hair my friend! Omds. Imagine the look on the farmers faces haha. Would they not have noticed before?! Oh flip. What's darkness got to do with Hauka?! Well she finally admits it! We all knew Wyndle was right. No matter how many pancakes she was gonna eat! But that whole thing earlier being a spectacle? Now that's great plotting. I just assumed it was a funny little sequence but it takes on such significance now! Ooh i do hope we get to meet another prospective radiant. That would be cool. I, Lift, would argue its both. You feel a loss of identity and things changing, so you look to another like you to explain what's going on, aaannd you have a sense of justice too. Prince of Tashikk. I wonder who that is. And what are the bets Nale has used orders from his time period to get away with his work! So, Hauka has been trading with twig lady maybe. Interesting. Well that's gonna put a spanner in the works for Lift, now everyone is gonna be looking for her! Are you crazy kid?! Tailing Nale? Madness i swear!!! 8 Yep the walls are definitely gonna feel smaller if loads of people are hunting you😬 Ha probably tourists lol. Lucky Lift is preoccupied! I don't know why either! There's probably some clever scientist out there who reads the books and has figured out why it disappears after half a day of inactivity. Well tbh if i saw a man with a scar like that walking with purpose, I'd probably step out of the way too! Hmm. Does Nale has some invisibility ability? If Lift loses track of him but never loses track of normal people. Guess we might find out later! Phew. You nearly messed it up Lift! Be more careful next time. Could be you the shopkeeper shouts at!! Uh oh. Hes a skybreaker. He won't take this lightly at all.👀 Holy shit. Did he really have to use a fucking shardblade?! And he just fills the paperwork and goes to leave with no further thought! How was this man ever a Herald? He doesn't seem honourable. Hmm this seems to imply Nale knows Tashi and Tashi is real. So maybe it is one of the heralds then and he could be out in the world again considering what Nale says here. But he says it like its a bad thing. Two mad heralds, a barbaric one, and maybe another one too now. But when will he arrive I wonder. Wow. He just refers to the legalese. No heart. Seriously, what happened to these guys? And he's even confused why nobody understands. Its just beyond belief. Ooh was that a cognitive shadow? That's cool. Yeah Lift, it's severed the soul so too late for you kiddo :( Wow ok. Lift really likes danger huh. Ooh thats interesting. I imagine this is where a lot of their shared water comes from. Yes Lift! I will remember those who others forget!! Eyes you cannot see. Local spies or maybe even Szeth himself? Eek! Yes i knew it! There is something supernatural about his ability to disappear. Makes it even riskier! Oof ok Tashi has gotta be a herald then. 10 heralds. Lool Wyndle trying to warn Lift and she just doesn't care haha. I wonder how many words there are to say. Well she isn't wrong there Wyndle. She'd never get over her own death!!! Oh so now she worries about people seeing her hanging! Although it was night before so it makes more sense now. I didn't consider that at the time. Well thats an awesome use of her regrowth. And Lift is right. Often people are too busy in the mundane they can miss something awesome right in front of them! Flipping heck Wyndle. You'd have thought he was high or something lol. Whst a reaction! But he is a gardener i suppose!! Is it just me or is always old male guards who are there whenever a character sneaks in somewhere in like every book or movie ever haha. But Nale does seem to be recruiting for his order. They could be a LOT of trouble in Oathbringer. Of course Lift found the food first😂 but at least she can gain back some stormlight now since no doubt she'll need to use it. Yeah Wyndle. Its very obvious you need to stop Nale! Its the edgedancer thing to do. You know what i thought about just now. The reversed positions of the radiants and the heralds. In the stories the radiants grew corrupt or whatever and they're bad but the heralds are perfect. So far, the radiants we've met are by no means perfect, but the Heralds are also not who we were led to believe they were. Well i got work tomorrow and its nearly 10 here so I'm calling it quits about halfway now. Back on it in the morning! Don't forget tomorrow, 7/7/20 is Leatherbound Kickstarter Day guys!!! Just don't take all the copies before i can order one😝 And just as a heads up, i predict I'll finish Edgedanxer tomorrow, then probably Weds i will make a post of my own oathbringer predictions and listen to the shardcast predictions episode. Thursday the 9th my journey through Oathbringer should begin, and I'm gonna aim to finish by my 21st, the 16th October, so 14 weeks. I did WoR in about 12 so i think its achievable. Then i will look into the RoW release extracts and if the novella is out, i have a month to make my way through that too!
KEP Track Part 1 – Northam to Trimmer Road. July 12th 2020 We’ve seen this track running through the Mundaring area, and never really knew what it was. We visited Fred Jacoby Park a few times last year, and the track runs alongside this, and my curiosity finally got the better of me, so I googled it. The Kep track is a walk/bike/horse trail, and follows The Mundaring – Kalgoorlie pipeline between Mundaring and Northam. Distance is 75km Kep is apparently from the aboriginal word Gep , meaning water. Been planning on doing this for a while, and was just waiting for the weather to cool, and then the Covid thing to settle down. So we made a start at the weekend. Bearing in mind, we have a 2 year old and a pram with us, so we aren’t going to be making a huge amount of progress. I estimate about 9 – 10 walks to finish this. We drove to Northam, and spent an hour looking for the start of the track. Much more confusing than you would have thought, and the route wasn’t actually marked on Google. I initially thought it was gonna start at the suspension footbridge, but couldn’t see any markers. We got some info from someone else’s online diary, that it started at Poole Street. We found Poole street, but all we found was a (very cool) abandoned footbridge, here: https://goo.gl/maps/Bt2TrZNktvEFbYM68 Time was ticking, so we drove to the visitors centre, and spoke to the lady there – she was very helpful. Turns out, it was by the Poole Street Footbridge, just on the other side of it, in a gravel carpark. And it was marked on Google after all, here: https://goo.gl/maps/mtCNJEe8kMozAiK36 I dropped my wife and little boy in the car park, then drove down to the end point – a car park off Trimmer Road here: https://goo.gl/maps/pxK9X9QNxZA1um716 Called a taxi ($15) to take me back to the start, and off we went: Out of interest, there were no uber drivers active in Northam when we checked – this was a Sunday, just before midday. The very first bit, isn’t very well marked, as the path immediately splits into two, and there is no marker that we could see telling you which one to take. We opted for the left, which turned out to be wrong. I luckily had the GPS route on my Garmin, and realised my mistake (the route I had was downloaded from the net, and showed the start point in Northam itself, hence my confusion about where the actual start point was) The path goes under a railway bridge, crosses the road, and starts to follow the pipeline. I won’t give a blow by blow account, as there is only so much you can talk about walking on gravel, but the highlights/observations of this walk were: *The steepish hill after the first 1.5km. I’m reasonably fit, but it was certainly a challenge with a Pram, and junior picked this moment to decide he didn’t want to walk. There is a gradient map on the brochure, and it looks like this is by far the worst climb of the whole Track. Happy about that. * Northam Army Base. From what I can gather – this place is only used for basic training now, and for cadets. It apparently has accommodation and a mess. It has a runway, that the sign says was owned, used and maintained by the RAAF, however, they no longer use or maintain it, so it is not used for RAAF aircraft. Not sure if anything else flies from here still? I would be interested to do a little more digging into the history of the place. I took some pics of the info signs outside, but I haven’t read them all yet. I bet it’s hot, training out there in the summer….. *West Northam Tanks. This is one seriously big water tank. The sign said that the pipeline pumps water in here, and it can then travel from here about 64km to Cunderdin by gravity alone. I would love to have a look inside. We noticed there are two pipelines, but sometimes they split apart, and run different routes. I have no idea why this is. If anyone knows, I would be interested to hear an explanation. We did notice a lot of old rusted sections of the pipeline running alongside the working one. I’ll have to look up some of the history of the pipeline, but it leads me to believe that the one there now is not the original. I vaguely remember reading somewhere, that the original pipeline was buried underground. We soon arrived back at the car, hopped in, and were homeward bound. About 7km walked today. GPS says moving time was 1hr 40 min, although it took us almost 3 hours with stopping for lunch, and His Lordship’s various tantrums/refusals to walk along the way. The original KEP Website no longer seems to be active, for whatever reason? I’ve managed to get hold of an Archived copy of it, and the brochure. Linked below. I’ll try and add updates as we go. Nice to get this finished before the weather starts to warm up. Next time, we are going to have to take two cars, and leave one at the end point, drive the other to the start, as I think it’s not gonna be practical to keep getting taxis from Northam, the further from Northam we get. If you’re still reading, thanks for listening to my ramblings. Til next time. Fort Elmond Valley: Session 1 (Vaults and Vertibirds)
Lately, I've been giving another look at a game called Vaults and Vertibirds, hosted at VnV. It's a pretty nifty conversion of Fallout mechanics into D&D 5e, while still doing its own thing. I'd pondered converting my Apocalypse Fox game over to the system, but wanted to give it a test drive. Thus, I decided to run its prewritten adventure, Fort Elmond Valley, in a solitaire session. While Apoc-Fox is my own setting, I wanted to give a Fallout vibe to the setting. This adventure isn't exactly canon to my game, but is a mish-mash of the FO canon used with my own. Also needed a reason for Dana to travel all the way to Ohio from New York, heh. If interested, here are my slap-dash stats for Dana's beastly race, the Moreau: MOREAU
AGI +2, Speed: 40 ft, HD d6, Rad Resist 50
Natural Weapons: Can claw or bite for d4 damage when unarmed
Critter Spook: Disadvantage to interact with animals (mutated or otherwise), but -2 damage on their attacks against you (min. 1 dmg)
Will be using the "Survival Mode" rules in the Overseer's Operations Handbook (the game's Dungeon Master Guide). If interested in Dana's stats, as always, here's an Imgur upload. Also, I'm providing a link to an oracle I'm using, as I forgot where I grabbed it from. Still using a basic d6 oracle for the all-caps stuff, (1 = NO, AND; 2 = NO; 3 = NO, BUT; etc) Session 1: Varmint Among Hayseed “It ended when you said, goodbye...” The song finished on Dana's smartphone, tuned into the Ohio radio station known as W-RQN. It had been a long trip on her collapsible bicycle, but her contacts had made traveling to Fort Elmond Valley from Lock City much, much less grueling. And made it take less than a week's travel by herself! The tech cult in New York, the Scholars of the Super-Highway, had contact with an even greater one. This hermetic faction, calling itself the Brotherhood of Steel, made the Scholars an offer they couldn't refuse. In the valley, the locals had a tough time giving their dues to the Brotherhood, in exchange for their protection. Because Dana was a freelance adventurer and deniable (some would say disposable) asset, the Scholars offered her up as a bargaining chip on behalf of the settlers of Fort Elmond. If Dana could known and understand their plight, and find a way for them to compensate the Brotherhood once more, she could save them. And also not be on their dissection table. Despite the paranormal apocalypse, the Brotherhood knew little of the so-called Moreau race, of which Dana was a member. Other names abound for such animal-like people, including “parahuman” or “furry”. This was, of course, when people didn't try to shoot them, whether or not they are mistaken for monsters. Finally arriving at the abandoned cabin (Area 1) where she'd spend her time, the vixen entered and crashed on the cot. Her legs were aching, and the pedals had dug into her unshod feet by now. Some spare pre-fall food, preserved with amazing technology and fresh even decades later, lazily sat all about the cabin. Would the foodstuffs last at least a week? NO, AND nothing was as good as it seemed – anything of real nutritional value was breached and spoiled by now. “Fuck. Off to a lovely start,” Dana grumbled to herself. According to the d6 oracle, it'd been sunny and warm all day, and night was starting to fall. This early in the evening, the vixen's instincts to hunt bothered her. With only some oversized rat meat left in her pack, she'd need more nourishment than Ever-Puft marshmallows or Judah-brand graham crackers. Was there even any chocolate left? NO, BUT there was a jar of peanut butter. Maybe it'd last a day or two? If her intel was correct, the two closest spots were an old farm (Area 2), and some kind of camp site (Area 3). Intel didn't give any info on the camp, but they didn't get close. Even if Ohio had a fair amount of its technology working, due to the nuclear plant within the Fort Elmond region, dangerous individuals were always eager to take it by force. Perhaps Dana could get some extra food from the farm? Surely, somehow had to maintain it. She gets up, stowing her Mole Rat Chunks and two bottles of Dirty Water, and sets out to investigate the farm. As a house rule, I'll roll Survival to see if Dana remains undisturbed while en route. Her Survival roll is 88, which is pretty low compared to her skill rank of 45, but not terrible. So I ask: does Dana run into a combat encounter? NO, AND she doesn't encounter anything, to be honest. It's eerily quiet when she arrives at Hofmann Farm, actually. Not even a candlelight in the farmhouse. Seems they grow some kind of sharp-looking grain, and an odd-looking red-brown fruit with leaves of deadly nightshade. Unsuccessfully, Dana's Survival comes up 59 – it has to be edible, right? Surely, they wouldn't notice a single fruit missing? Snatching and chomping into the thing, Dana wretches. “Damn!” Whatever this fruit is, it tastes awful and its flesh is hard as a potato! She lets it drop to the dirt. Even with her spitting out the alleged crop loudly, not a sound. With a DC 10 Perception check, Dana rolls a Natural 20! There's no way this place is abandoned, and not even recently. The plants aren't picked clean, and the fields were tended recently. She decides to slip past the fields of razorgrain and... whatever the hell she tried to eat... and approaches the homestead. Unsure of what to expect, she turns on her plasma pistol in her pocket, the energy weapon warming up at the flick of a switch. And she knocks... ...and she's greeted by an older fellow, carrying an old candlestick in one hand, and a hunting rifle in the other. Though startled at first by her appearance, the weathered redneck blinks. “...hey, Cecile? We've got quite the guest, ma.” A glance toward the pistol grip, and he wearily takes the longarm in both hands. “You're, uh, not here to raid us, are you?” Dana shakes her head. “If I was, you'd be a puddle by now. Your home seemed abandoned, so I assumed the worst. Name's Dana. Surprised you didn't cap me on sight, sir.” “Sir? Aw, don't need to call me that, now. I work for a livin', don't I? You can call me Aaron. Dana, huh? I haven't seen a mutant like you in... well, ever! No offense, mind.” “None taken.” Dana shrugs. “If you're winding down for bed, don't mean to disturb you--” By now, the wife Cecile pokes her head through the crack of the door. “Egad! Aaron, what in the hell is this... this freak doin' here?!” Dana's ears fold. “Freak? Excuse me, but who the fu—” “Cecile! Come now,” Aaron diffuses. “Lookit that. It's a genuine plasma defender in her pocket. One of them science-y folk, I'd bet. She could help us, if you shut yer piehole.” “Help us?” Cecile scoffs. “A monster like her? She'd sooner eat our son than save him!” “Hold your horses,” Dana blinks. “The hell's going on with your son?” Aaron shrugs, “The hell's a horse? But c'mon, you ornery woman. Let the fox inside. Let her talk. She might be Peter's only hope.” Cecile concedes. “I'm keeping my eye on her. Don't you forget it, varmint.” “Well, fuck you too,” Dana grunts at Cecile. “Hey now,” Aaron grimaces. “My wife didn't start all nice with you, but no need to have a bug in yer ass, too.” He sighs, lowering his gun. “But yes, c'mon in, stranger. Don't suppose you'd care for some tato soup?” “...'tato soup?” Dana cants her head. “I didn't see any potatoes in your field. Did I miss 'em?” “Nah, not potato. Tato. Some kinda mix of two veggies,” Aaron explains. “Ain't any kind of delicious, but makes up for bein' real nutritious.” “Uh. Maybe,” Dana shrugs. “Any kind of seasonings in that soup?” “Nope!” “Uh. I'll pass, then. But what about your son?” Cecile chimes in. “Then, are you some kind of scientist? Or even a doctor? Or is my husband as big a fool as I think?” Dana shrugs again. “Look. I've hacked some computers, own a blaster, and treated some illness. Might be better than some out there, but I'm no egghead, nor a sawbones. If there's a kid's life at stake, I'll hazard a chance.” Cecile grimaces. “Then, it'll have to do. A weirdo or not, if you can help our boy...” The fox rubs the bridge of her snout. “So, what symptoms does he have?” Aaron frowns. “We don't know. He was fine the other day, but now he's all kinds of sick. It's been warm lately, but ain't the sun makin' him clammy and pale at the same time. At least he ain't dyin' of thirst, but he can barely keep food down. And he's been eatin' tato his whole life, mind!” Dana looks over the farm boy, who tosses and turns in his sleep. Gingerly touching her furred hand to the back of his forehead, she shakes her head. “You're right. Can't be heat stroke. He's cold as a corpse. I might be able to narrow down what's wrong, if I can get a good internet connection out here...” Though not as reliable as a Pip-Boy, Dana's smartphone might help her Medicine check. Is there reception out this way? YES, AND Dana remembers the code given for the Brotherhood's mainframe. Not only does she get Advantage on the Medicine check, but she also forwards information to an informant of hers from the Scholars. If she can't figure it out, Gwen could, back home. Her first attempt is a 41 – so close, her Medicine rank is 35! Getting frustrated, her second attempt is a 98. She was onto something, but the illness doesn't match up with what little she could find on the remnants of the internet. “Dammit,” she growls. “Nothing the old world knew of. Might be something new. I can't even think of something to buy him time.” Hearing this, Aaron grows quiet. “...oh.” Cecile becomes fierce. “That's it? Your off-brand Pip-Boy couldn't find anything?!” Dana shakes her head. “I'm a slayer, not a miracle worker. There's gotta be something. I sent what I found to a contact of mine. She'll figure it out. She has to.” The wife isn't pleased. “Then go. Never wanted you around, anyway, you damned mutt!” “Watch your mouth, y'ungrateful bitch!” Dana growls. “Are you the kind of asshole your Brotherhood looks after?” “The Brotherhood?” Aaron livens up. “You're from the Brotherhood o' Steel, then? With that raygun and your handheld gadget, why didn't I realize that?” “I'm not,” Dana sighs. “But they've hired me to look into your problems. They want to know what's wrong, because there's been trouble out here lately.” Dana's vague words, coupled with pressure from the Brotherhood for compensation, draws some suspicion from even Aaron. At a 57, Dana's Speech skill doesn't work. “Shucks,” Aaron grumbles. “I bet they're just hankerin' for more food, now.” Dana grimaces. “Maybe. They've got my own tech cult in their back pocket, and I'm the last chance to negotiate with Fort Elmond. If there's nothing out here for me to fix, well... might be time to move onto greener pastures, and soon.” Cecile groans. “More bad news. A real lucky charm, aren't you?” “Yeah. I know,” Dana replies, “You hated me the minute your husband opened the door for me. I'mma piss off. But if I learn a cure for your kid, I'm coming back. With or without a warm welcome.” With that, the vixen trudges back outside, and off into the evening with a chip on her shoulder. Without any insight to alleviate Peter's mysterious malady, and no idea of a cure, there's nothing to be gained of Area 2 for now. On the hex grid, Area 3 is to the east. Due south of the farm, a chain gas station (Area 4) of the old world sat, rusting away. There was no way to get deeper into the valley beyond that station, or by crossing into the camp's territory. Perhaps there was salvage to be found there. Chances are that, whoever was camping out in Area 3, they would not welcome Dana's kind in to tell ghost stories...
Abused as a child by stepfather, found new info today and not sure how to move forward.
This will be quite long as I've never actually told anyone about my childhood and what happened. I was pretty young the first time I was abused. The youngest I can remember would be about 6-8. I only remember as my golden birthday was when I was 7 and I remember getting a horse to help me though some of the stuff that happened. I was first abused by my brother who is only a year older than me. At the time I had no idea what was really going on. I was way too young to understand, but the school found out as my brother was caught doing things to me by other kids who reported it to the school. I received counseling and so did my brother. I know now as I am 25 that someone was abusing my brother at a young age who then abused me. I have forgiven him, we don't get along and I hardly speak to him. Unfortunately, growing up my mother blamed me for what happened. I was a kid and I didn't understand why she would do that at the time. She would make comments at home about how I wanted it and how I was mature for my age. It makes me sick just typing it. She would blame me for ruining the family and that my parents got divorced. She would also tell people what happened in public and told everyone in our small town so you can imagine the gossip. My parents divorced when I was in the third grade, my mother fought for sole custody and thankfully my dad fought her in court and each got partial custody. My mom met my stepdad at work. I was told that my mom was cheating and then she told my dad that if he left he would never see his kids. He did leave and after many court hearings and almost giving up he got granted partial custody. I spent one week with each parent and then switched. My stepdad moved in almost limitedly. I was still in the third grade and I thought that was odd considering my dad had just moved out. My mom spent a lot of time talking to him about what happened to me and my brother. I'm honestly not sure why, but based on what I know now, I think this was the reason he dated my mother. By the fourth grade my mom and stepdad wanted to move about 15 miles closer to their work. They bought a crappy trailer in the county and we moved. My brother started having fights in school and becoming a problem child and this is when the abuse started with me. I think he started it right when the family was having issues so that he could threaten me when he didn't get his way. He would pay me to take off my shirt and he would walk into the bathroom when I was showering. I was uncomfortable and I knew it was wrong and I refused and locked the door multiple times. He would threaten and say that no one would believe me and that I would ruin the family again. Lots of mental abuse throughout the years. It came to a point where he would come into my room at night and abuse me. I would wake up and try to get out of the bed and go to the bathroom. He would stop and run back to their room. I stated having sleep problems and would be up at all hours of the night. Too scared to go to sleep. I would lock the door until they took the lock off of my door. My mom ended up getting me sleeping pills which I didn't want to take. I honestly don't know what happened when I was knocked out with sleeping pills and I don't think I ever want to know. We moved again later after living at that house for a year or two. During that time I was 9-11. Once we moved back to the same small town, I used lots of excuses to stay at friends houses and moved a dresser in front of my door at night. They still had the lock off of my door. The abuse didn't continue after we moved back as my older brother moved in as well. His bedroom was located right next to mine and I think my stepdad knew that he would be caught. I grew up and tried to forgot and move on, but my mother and stepdad wouldn't let me. I honestly just wanted to move on and let it go. They would both talk about how I was so mature for my age and how I wanted it. My mother only ever talked about the situation with my brother and my stepdad only talked about what he did. He knew what he did. He brought it up a lot in conversations. It made me uncomfortable all the time. He was never sorry. He was always worried about going to jail and would guilt trip me. Say that I wouldn't want to destroy the family. I moved out at 16 and lived with my dad. I couldn't take it anymore. The mental abuse was too much, and I considered killing myself. I never told my dad what happened, but he knew how bad my mom was so I moved in with him. I moved on in life. I don't really speak much to my mom and I never talk to my stepdad. She'll call me sometimes throughout the year and she'll try to visit. It always ends horribly and we don't speak for long periods of time. Today my family member told me my mom and stepdad put one of their houses up for sale. I texted her and didn't get a response. My family member texted and said maybe something happened to my stepdad or mom. So I googled them and thats when I found all the new(old) info. Looks like my stepdad has a history of sexual assaulting children. In 1992 he was convicted of sexual assault of a minor who was 14/15. Based on the court case he lied on his application to a teen group facility that helps minors recovering from abuse and drugs to get a job. He was caught selling cocaine to minor girls in exchange for sexual favors. Two minors came forward and pressed charges. He should have never gotten the job as he already had a felony for selling drugs to teens. The court outlined that he went through all the trouble of lying to get this job to abuse teens. There was DNA evidence and enough testimony to convict him. He was sentenced to 28 years in 1993. He appealed the decision with his lawyer and over the course of 8 years went through the legal system. Him and his lawyer illegally obtained information that the girl had been previously sexually assaulted and lied. I'm not really sure how that works as we reported it as a rape and she was 14. The police investigated the claims and found that after a while her stories didn't remain the same so after months she claimed that the sex was consensual. The case was dropped but I'm still not sure how a 14 year old could consent to sex with an adult. After this she was put in the group home by her mother to seek treatment. She had been there 4 months when my stepdad abused her. He only had the job less than two months. He knew what he was doing and was planning to do. She and one other girl came forward and pressed charges. They claimed there was others. Fast forward to 2001, he gets released and the charges of sexual assault have been dropped. I'm not really sure how or why, the court report doesn't say. He is not on the sex offenders registry and the charges were gone. He moved away from that city to our small little town and got a job with my mom. By 2003-2004 he started dating my mom and we moved in 2004. The abuse started around then. After reading the full court case I threw up. I'm still disgusted and sick by this whole thing. I don't really know how to feel or how to process. I don't what to do. It makes me sick that he did this to multiple other girls and the courts just dropped it. If they wouldn't have he would still be in jail and this would have never happened to me. He would have never met my mom and abused me. I'm disgusted by my mother. She had to have known. I know she knows what he did to me, but she says that it is in the past and that I've moved on. I'm betting she knew what he did and hen brought him into our home. The fact that she talked about what happened with my brother so early on when he moved in makes me sick. I'm a ball of emotions and anger and sheer rage. I had moved on thinking that as long as he lived with my mom and wasn't around kids it wouldn't matter. Now it makes me so angry that they let him out and he got to do it again to me. I don't know what I should do now. I don't know if it is worth it pressing charges. I looked and I have until I'm 35 in my state to press charges for sexual assault. I don't know how that would go and if he and probably my mother would use my previous assaults against me like he did the other girl. And i don't know if I even should. I'm 25, have a career going and am doing well in life. Is this only going to cause me more pain and then he gets off scott free again. I have no one to talk to about this. None of my friends know, at least I never told them what happened. I know some have guessed one of which is my best friend who is has too much going on in her life for her to deal with this. Thank you for reading and commenting any advice that you have.
Hey guys! So I’m a big fan of Survivor and have followed edgic for a while, and I remember there was someone who used to do edgic on here but stopped during Final Reckoning, so I thought I would give it a shot! As opposed to Survivor, I don’t think there’s a lot of consistency with The Challenge’s edit. But nonetheless, I think it’ll be fun to do for the season, and with being in quarantine, I have nothing but time. If you’re unfamiliar with edgic, I would check out Inside Survivor’s Introduction on how it works! Currently breaking down the cast into three categories: MAIN CHARACTERS:Prominently featured in episodes, have multiple storylines, if the season ended right now they would be big talking points. SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: The have or have had storylines of their own or are key pieces in other storylines, seem to have more to come, and have decent screen time. TERTIARY CHARACTERS: Side characters with minimal screen time, have no current storyline, and the edit is either waiting for their story’s to pick up or until their boot episode. Also a note: I am UNSPOILED, and I do NOT take the season trailer nor the “what happens next week” clips into account when I make these charts. My edgic is solely based on what the EPISODES seem to be telling. Total Madness Edgic MAIN CHARACTERS Dee: Dee is arguably the main character of the season thus far: she is winning dailies and eliminations, she’s in a messy love triangle/diamond, she is feuding with former allies/teammates. My one worry for Dee is if she is coming on too hot in the edit? The overexposure and negative tone (constantly being called arrogant, evil music to her laugh) to her edit make me feel she could be being built up for an epic downfall. But then again, Cara & Paulie rode the negative train to a final last season, so time will tell. Episode 5 was a good cool down for her in terms of tone and screen time. Johnny: Johnny is a main character honestly by default, although a lot of his airtime is just fluff. Johnny’s edit relies mostly on other people: his alliance with Wes, him shitting on Ashley, him making fun of people in competitions. Episode 4 we FINALLY got to see him make some moves in the tribunal (and a new ally in Big T), and we saw his edit continue to grow in a positive direction with helping his new pal Wes, deterring him from going after Jordan. Tori: Another large presence this season. The edit seems to beat us over the head that the front-runners of the women are Dee and Jenny (having both won red skulls and tribunals), with Tori constantly trying (and failing) to achieve the same results. Tori is being built up as a formidable advisory for Dee, with constant focus on her “lack of opportunities to earn a redskull,” which sounds a little ominous, but I still think she is being built up as a dark horse to win. Like Dee, Episode 5 was a good cool down, only really being shown (understandably) being upset at being dragged into Jordan and Wes’ argument. Rogan: Similar to Dee, he is a main character who I think is being set up to fail. He is pitting himself against the current hero, Jay; and he has been called out multiple times for skating by last season (and how this season isn’t for players like him). A positive for him is he has shown to be self-aware (making fun of his man-whore ways, taking CT’s advice, complimenting his team in challenges). But this cliff hanger is a battle between good and evil: my gut says Rogan still has legs to his story, but my heart wants Jay to beat Rogan’s smug bravado. Jay: The hero for the beginning of our story. The rookie who keeps getting picked on but has SO MUCH HEART. His edit is to make you root for him, and I believe that whoever takes him out (which going into this cliffhanger seems likely to be Rogan) will be someone we are supposed to actively root against. But definitely the breakout star of these early episodes, and I personally hope he pulls through (even though I think his story may have played itself out). Wes: This is Wes’ comeback season after a disastrous WotW2. We’ve gotten to learn about his possum strategy and new alliance with Johnny, and we have seen that people are willing to approach him (like TYB and rookies when the vote was going towards Johnny). Up until episode 5 I gave Wes a leg up on Johnny, but it seems more and more people are turning on Wes, while Johnny is gaining allies (Aneesa, Big T). I thought Wes was going to be in it for the long haul, but I grow increasingly worried for him. Also to clarify on Wes’ mixed tone: even though Wes is abrasive and cokcy, he is able to explain himself, as well as his enemies (Jordan and Josh) seem to come across as worse in the edit: Jordan inserted himself into the turf situation and was very rude; Josh kept saying claiming a rivalry while Wes (eventually) called Josh nice and not a threat, so why target him? I Cory: I’ve been impressed with Cory this season. He is shown to be logical, making new alliances (Jenny) as well as keeping old one (Nelson, Kailah), and he seems to be learning from his past mistakes. Cory, similar to Wes, is also looking good because he’s getting a good amount of screen time each episode, but not enough to where he seems oversaturated. Another dark horse for the guys for me. Kailah: A slow start to her comeback season, but Kailah has been pushing to the front of this inflated cast the last few episodes. Her relationship with Bear FINALLY kicked off, and she has seemed to be the main talking point of the holy trinity. Episode 1 had me nervous for the alliances fate as they were highlighted during the montage of “floaters won’t last this season.” These next few episodes will be key to see if Kailah’s story arch will persevere, or burn up in the edit, similarly to Ashley. Jenny: Rounding out our main characters is another who BARELY made it into this list. It’s not so much that I think Jenny herself is a main character, so much as a main presence. The edit wants to remind us that Jenny is a likable beast who has old connections (Dee), but also is making new deals (Cory). She is the more likable front runner, and the fact that her visibility has cooled significantly since the first two episodes makes her a stand out for possible winners. If I was betting, I’d bet high on Jenny. SECONDARY CHARACTERS Nany: Her hookup with Asaf flamed out, but she still has her Holy Trinity alliance, which I’m sure will play a bigger part in the episodes to come. Nany’s edit seems to be more negative this season (versus her WotW1 episode being a positive comeback story), with her constantly saying “how hard” it already is. Nany had a great moment in episode 5 with her piecing together the Johnny/Wes alliance. I don’t know if it will play much into her overall story, but it’s one of the first positives to her edit this season. Still, I see a similar emotional WotW2 story, where she gets far just to not make the cut again. But as a fan, I hope she gets her W. Big T: Almost put her under main characters, but episode 5 changed my mind. I think she is being built up to female equivalent of Jay (underdog rookie fans love); however, I think her story has more legs since her visibility varies. Her Ashley storyline concluded, but a new one with Johnny and the Holy Trinity has opened up. She also is looking to “prove” herself, and I think she’s going to be a make a big splash this season, but will be used sparingly while the numbers are still high. Aneesa: A breakout episode for Aneesa is Episode 4. Similarly to Nany, the show is constantly giving us her commentary/opinion on situations, but we finally got to hear some strategy. The quote of “I get in my way more than others” stuck with me, and I think we will either see her fall into old habits, or break through and get out of her own way. Do I think Aneesa will win? No. But I think we are supposed to be rooting for her to finally get that W. Episode 5 was back to the usual commentary, but I see her sticking around for some time. Kyle: His edit is minimal yet complicated. He and Rogan had their episode 1 rivalry, where they both bashed each other yet wanted the other to trust them. Then in episode 4, he plotted Ashley’s demise with Mattie yet also was the main person consoling her. Overall, Kyle gives create commentary on OTHER people’s storylines, but has yet to really grab and hold onto one of his own. Jordan: A very negative and one dimensional edit for the reigning champ: Poor argumentative sport who wants to help his fiancé. If he outlasts Tori, maybe his story will grow some legs. The only hint of a future storyline is the edit constantly has him sizing up Fessy’s abilities. A future showdown with the standout rookie? Perhaps. Swaggy C: I find him a lot more likable here than on Big Brother. I can’t get over how bad episode 1 was for him where Bayleigh was the spokesperson for him. I think that is a clue that she will outshine him this season and she is the one of this pair we are supposed to be invested in. However, he has since made up for his poor premiere, as we even got learn some info about his work outside of the challenge in episode 5. Each passing episode I think he has more of a chance to run deeper in the game. Jenna: Considering on most of her recent seasons she was invisible until her elimination, I’m liking her chances and visibility for a deep run thus far. She is a part of her unholy trinity alliance/a big talking point during Kailah and Bear’s hookup, wants to bring “Barbie Beast” back, her motivation to winning (starting a family with Zach) and she has been able to explain herself and situations (like why she voted Nelson, how she doesn’t like talking politics to Jay). I believe we’re supposed to keep an eye on Jenna, and hopefully the Zach drama doesn’t fizzle out her season arch. Bear: I debated making him a main character, but so far he only has his over the top obsession with Kailah driving his story. He finally got the girl…now what? Time will tell if he gets any other weight to his story, but so far it’s been an extreme one note. Nelson: Up until episode 5 Nelson was just an over-the-top side character: giving pep talks to the newbies, randomly fighting with Kailah, almost dying at challenges. In episode 5 we still got the character (like his challenge commentary), but we also got to see heart and a real player. He was upset with being nominated again, and he had a great scene in the tribunal where he got to hash things out with Josh and a production assistant named Kaycee, who didn’t trust him; as well as state he doesn’t trust Wes anymore (who has shown to work with TYB). I don’t see a Nelly T win, but he’s definitely getting more of a role in the season now. Josh: Episode 5 bumped Josh out of tertiary charactes. Until now, Josh’s only real content were random mixed-bags and circumstantial: doing well in the first daily, a quick comment about his family, being supportive to Jenn in a daily, and being called dumb by Ashley and Dee during a puzzle. Episode 5 gave us the one-sided(ish) rivalry of Wes and Josh, and Josh now has a storyline. To me the edit kind of buried Josh, and I’m curious how this will play out. Will Josh get “revenge” on Wes calling him the worst player? Or will Wes…ignore Josh the rest of the season? Time will tell. TERTIARY CHARACTERS Bayleigh: The female rookie standout who, similarly to Fessy, players are constantly praising her athletic ability. I think she seems to be a more dynamic character than Chris, and I’m interested to see what happens when one of the two eventually get picked to go in. Definitely see her becoming a main character later on, but right now her only real storyline is her relationship with her fiancé. Fessy: Fessy is the other (albeit quiet) male standout rookie other than Jay. He is intimidating to others and is constantly getting called out for how strong he is in challenges. He seems to be shown with TYB quite a bit, but we haven’t heard much from him in terms of strategy. For right now, he is a physical force to be reckoned with (although, taking Dee & Ashley’s word, not a mental force). Mattie: An after thought until episode 4. Since the Ashley storyline began and ended in one episode, I’ll be curious to see if she gets another story or if she’s relegated to WotW1 where she’s “used as needed.” Definitely holding onto the line of her being a gambler, and so I assume that will pop up when she’s ready to risk it all. But as we saw in episode 5, back to the random filler confessionals she goes. Melissa: Another comeback player, she has been very UTR this season. Two positives I see in her minimal edit: she gets positive acknowledgement from others on her abilities during challenges, and she normally gets to explain her vote during nominations. However, I didn’t like how cold she came across when the show cut to her during Jay’s nomination (considering she is also a rookie) so that’s where her mixed tone came from. To sum up Melissa: she currently has no storyline, and with only single eliminations weeding out this large cast, I think it’ll be a while before Melissa takes center stage. But until then, she should be safe. Kaycee: I blame her horrible edit on her terrible charisma, and not a reflection on how she does in the game. As a Big Brother fan, and no offense to Kaycee, but she is boring and can’t give good confessionals. She did get some content during the tribunal, as we got to hear her and Nelson hash out that they don’t talk to each other. Kaycee could be this season’s Shaleen (not talking until her boot episode), or she could win. I truly don’t know, because she’s a boring comp queen/a producer’s worst nightmare.
