Cloak Affiliate Links in WordPress – ThirstyAffiliates

4(+1) Cool WordPress Plugins And How We Use Them On Our Affiliate Websites

Since every article you find on Google is simply a list of paid affiliate plugins ranked by how much they pay in referral commission, I thought it would be helpful to get a thread going where people recommend plugins they actually use, free or paid.
I am going to start with four(+1) plugins we use on pretty much every affiliate website we manage.
Thirsty Affiliates (FREE): A link management tool allowing you to cloak links making them look nicer (domain.com/link/healthy-dog-food/). This way you only have to switch out one link in their dashboard if an offer expires or if you want to switch merchants, instead of having to replace several links all over your websites. Just make sure to uncloak Amazon links (there is an option for that), since cloaking is against their TOS.
It also tracks all your affiliate link clicks and displays them in a handy report. This is essential if you work with new partners and don't want to rely on their click-tracking. The paid version is $50 yearly and IMO not worth it. In fact we have a paid subscription but disabled it after we noticed that we don't use any of the pro features. The more popular alternative would be Prettylinks, but their free version is inferior in every way and they aggressively push you to buy their premium which is something I hate. While you might get away with pasting affiliate links straight into your articles at the beginning, once your website reaches a certain size good link management is essential so I recommend you start early.
One cool thing their premium version does is checking for 404s and notifying you of broken affiliate links. That's definitely a nice feature to have, however you can get it for free with the "Broken Link Checker" plugin. Don't download the one from the WordPress repository as the developer abandoned it and some bugs never got fixed. Instead get the one from Github, which is a forked version of the original and works perfectly. It'll check all internal and external links on your website and shows you what's broken. It even checks for redirects and lets your replace the old URL with one click. During the initial run it can be a little resource heavy, but on most hosting plans you won't notice it.
Shortcodes Ultimate ($39 one-time): The free version is good to get some lightweight layout/styling options for your articles, if you don't want to code them yourself. However, we've been mainly using their premium Add-on ($39 for the bundle, which is usually cheaper than buying their "Shortcode Creator" Add-on) that allows you to create custom shortcodes. You'll be able to create code snippets (HTML or PHP) in the dashboard and then place them in your content with shortcodes. This allows for very advanced stuff, but a simple use case would be to place 2-3 shortcodes in each article and then use them to test CTAs like newsletter signups or offers you are promoting site wide. You can then just A/B test different CTAs or offers in all your articles by simply switching out the code snippets. Once again, you'll see all your CTAs in a single dashboard, which makes organizing and testing so much more easier.
[REDACTED] (FREE): Lets you easily create, style and organize product boxes and shows them all in a dashboard. You can then place them in your content with a shortcode. Before we had something custom coded for this purpose but are currently replacing all product boxes on our websites with those created with this plugin after I saw a post about it in a different sub. I am fortunate enough to have access to quite a few very big sites, so we can split test on single articles over different websites and still get large enough sample sizes in a short period of time. After running tests on a couple of articles for 5 days we gathered data from about 250k impressions (1MM+ by now) and found that the new boxes increased CTR by about 10%-20%, depending on the site. Generally boxes convert a lot better than buttons or text links for us and we use them for pretty much every product (physical and digital) we advertise. This plugin is the best solution we've found so far. Again, once a website reaches a certain size having all offers you promote in one place is a huge advantage and will save you a lot of time.
AAWP ($43 yearly): If you are exclusively pushing Amazon products, AAWP is the easiest plugin for creating product boxes and tables. It pulls product info by using Amazons API so all you need to add to your content is a shortcode and the ASIN. You can also pull product lists by keywords and bestsellers, but those never really converted for us. While it can pull the price of a product, we noticed disabling the price and instead using a "Check Price Now" CTA increased CTR dramatically and revenue by about 20%. I know some people say it's bad for UX, but what can I say, I just like money.

These plugins easily save us $$$$ in man-hours per year and are highly scalable. Especially the latter is something we look for, since switching out a link management tool on a big website can be a huge pain. You want to pick something that works right from the start. Additionally, if possible I like to avoid subscription style plugins. $20 a month might not seem like a lot, but this stuff quickly adds up and if you want to sell eventually, you'll try to get costs down as much as possible to make the site look more attractive.
Why I removed a plugin name: This post was deleted earlier by automod for spam reports and when I asked a mod to restore it since it had 87% upvotes and didn't break any rules, he accused me of being affiliated with this plugin (I am not). So I removed the name and I also removed any links, just to be sure. I wont remove the whole paragraph as the point still stands, investing some time/money into nice looking CTA's people want to click often has a very nice ROI. I guess you don't really need a plugin for that if you can code yourself or have some money to spend on an Upwork dev.

Would be very interested to hear other plugin recommendations that make your life as an affiliate easier. I'd be especially interested in what you guys use for popups/opt-ins as I am not 100% satisfied with our current setup.

[5E] [Themed Build] I am the Unicorn Wizard!

If only you all understood how excited I am to be presenting this to all you lovelies!
Before we begin, I must start this off with a disclaimer. To make it easier to read each point, I'll number them. What can I say? I like the numbered format!
  1. Yes, this is a joke song.
  2. No, this is not a joke post.
  3. Yes, this serious build is a joke that gets taken to far.
  4. No, this is not the most optimized build in the world, as that is not the intention of this build.
  5. Yes, there are multiple dump stats on purpose, partially for comedy and partially for a challenge.
  6. No, this is not a test drill, Private.
  7. Yes, this meant to be a bit of a goofy build.
  8. No, this is not meant to be taken seriously.
  9. Yes, this is still a serious guide and build.
  10. No, I'm not responsible for how your table responds if you bring this to said table.
  11. Yes, this guide does contain links that go to other places on Reddit, as well DnDBeyond for the character sheet at the end of the post, but not to any affiliated links of any capacity.
  12. No, they are not spam links.
  13. Yes, some of them direct you to Youtube.
  14. No, there are no Rick Rolls in this guide.
  15. Yes, I am being serious about the Rick Roll.
  16. No, this is not reverse psychology.
  17. Yes, this build is a choking hazard.
  18. No, this build is not meant for younger readers.
  19. Yes, this is a build I wrote up just because I enjoy writing silly builds that are still actually builds.
  20. No, this isn't really intended to be anything other than a fun build that I wanted to write up and share with the world.

Introduction

About a month before posting this build, I threw together a revised version of another build I did a long time ago...and by long time, I mean almost one year. Within that revised guide, I left an encrypted message. The message was a hint that this build was on it's way, but I do not believe anyone deciphered it in time. That's okay, you can still try and decrypt the code here if you all would like to!
For the uninitiated, this is based off of a song released on the 25th of October, in the year 2012. The band who preformed this wonderful song goes by the name of Ninja Sex Party. In case you haven't heard the song before, you can find this masterpiece riiiiight...here! Really, you should go watch the music video, but I will not link it here for the sake of showing less potentially explicit content in the thumbnail, since that's not something many people would probably wanna see here. Look, I'm trying my best here, guys and gals!
Now, I have a theory about this build, and it may seem controversial, but stick with me to the end and you'll see what I mean. So, here it is...
I think, by RAW or by most of the LAW and by some of the LAI, that the Unicorn Wizard is obviously not a real unicorn (duh), but he is also not a real wizard.
I do not think he is a Bard either. While the person playing the character playing a character is the musician, as well as the character playing the character, the Unicorn Wizard himself is not a musician, but a concept formed within the dream of a real musician playing a joke musician playing a Unicorn Wizard. Not confusing at all, right?
So, here's my theory: the Unicorn Wizard is actually an Arcana Cleric. Not just a standard Arcana Cleric either, but one with a 3 level dip into Open Hand Monk. Like I said, you gotta stick with me to see how I came to this theory.

I Don't Know What We're Talking About

Originally, I was having a lot of back and forth on what this build should be in the first place. I eventually came to the conclusion that I would get nowhere if I didn't set down some basic guidelines for myself.
Firstly, we need to make sure we uphold and follow the LAW (Lyrics as Written), in order to make a build that supports the RAW of 5e for the sake of making a build that rocks. In order to turn this build up to an eleven out of a possible five, we're gonna RAW dog the LAW, dog, and that is no LAI.
Secondly, we need to compare to the music video, sticking to the representations within the video itself. For example, while singing the lyrics "Just like Danny Sexbang, I'm handsome and strong," we can see the Unicorn Wizard barely able to lift anything, so even though the LAW would say that he should have a high Charisma and Strength scores, his Strength is absolutely a dump stat. We'll touch on his ability scores in a bit.
Thirdly, Imma cheat a little. The actual name of the musician is Leigh Daniel Avidan. Said musician plays a character named Danny Sexbang. Said character is imagining himself as the Unicorn Wizard in a dream. By this logic, they are simultaneously all different people and the same person all at once. You bet your sweet derrière that I'm going to exploit the living heckers out of this logic.

Let's Get This Terrible Party Started

Stats. This is were most of the controversy is going to come from, and there are absolutely better ways and options you can go with this stats, but I don't care. You do you, boo.
Here's how I build it, using Point Buy: 1. Str - 8 2. Dex - 15 3. Con - 15 4. Int - 8 5. Wis - 15 6. Cha - 8
Again, these are clearly suboptimal stats. Three dump stats? Seriously? But here's the thing: in order to stay true to the nature of the Unicorn Wizard, I think we have to look at the way he presents himself and the feats he achieves. So, let's begin.
Strength: As explained a few paragraphs above, clearly not physically strong.
Dexterity: "My spells are amazing, and my reflexes quick" pretty much sums it up.
Constitution: Insert stamina joke here.
Intelligence: "I'm more awesome and smarter than I already are" is clearly bad grammar, showing off just how lacking in Int he is.
Wisdom: "My spells are amazing, and my reflexes quick" once again sums up the fact that he does have at least one good mental stat.
Charisma: Not only does he fail to get the attention of a woman, but when he does she nearly throws up. The character dreaming of the Unicorn Wizard also has a mother who doesn't even like him, sooo...

Manticore

So, like all character builds, when we get into the meat of things, we start with the race. I actually had more trouble deciding on race than I thought I would. Would I make him a Minotaur and reflavor it to a guy with a horn? Should I wait until Saytr comes out (which it finally did on DnDBeyond), and reflavor that race? Maybe a tiefling, or something else?
In the end, I decided that I didn't want to nor needed to reflavor anything. Variant Human would work fine for what we have in mind. The reason for this is twofold:
  1. Multiple times throughout the video, we see and hear that the unicorn horn is either a prop, or is his junk, and not an actual horn. He also calls his junk a "wand" at the end of the video, so for the sake of the build, we'll be treating the horn as a prop item.
  2. We want that starting feat so that we can not only give a bit of optimization to the build, but to add flavor to it as well.
We will take a +1 into Wisdom and a +1 into Constitution. Before you ask about putting a +1 into Dexterity, you'll see why in the class portion of this guide. For Languages, I like Celestial or Sylvan, since Unicorns can understand and (telepathically) speak both. Your new stat array should be as follows:
  1. Str - 8
  2. Dex - 15
  3. Con - 16
  4. Int - 8
  5. Wis - 16
  6. Cha - 8
For the feat, we choose Magic Initiate (Druid). For VHuman Arcana Clerics, this is a very common and standard practice. For the spells, we will be taking Shillelagh, Magic Stone, and Goodberry. Shillelagh is gonna make us seem more awesome and more stronger than we already are, and I like to imagine Magic Stone as a pathetically over exaggerated excuse of a "comet of stars." For Goodberry, you must make sure that your DM and party know that the Goodberries are in fact strawberries covered in cream.

Why I Cry

Let's skip Classes for now, since that'll take the longest to explain, and get on with Background. For this, since as explained earlier, I think the Entertainer Background is the best choice here. See, remember how I said I planned on exploiting the exact nature and identity of the Unicorn Wizard? That's exactly what I'm gonna do here. We're taking the fact that the Unicorn Wizard is a dream persona of Danny Sexbang, who is himself a musician. So, in a sense, his Background would be Entertainer.
I chose lute as the instrument of choice, since it's the closest thing 5e has to a bass. Just make sure it is a blue lute. Other than that...I got nothing else on the Background, kid.

Road Trip

Here's your opportunity to stop reading if this guide got too amazing for you.
...
No?
Okay.
Finally, the Classes. So, why the 17/3 breakdown? If we're already investing so many levels into Arcana Cleric, why the Monk dip? Everyone knows that taking so little levels in Monk won't give us that much Ki, so what's even the point? It doesn't do too much for us, and prevents us from getting a free use of Divine Intervention. What's the deal with that yo? What's wrong with me? Am I crazy, or dumb?
...
But seriously, there's a few reasons why we take this dip. The first and major reason is the LAW. See, in the video, we see a few things about the Unicorn Wizard...
He is a master of karate. So much so, that he invents a new form of it every day. It even changes the way that Japan views the West. That does not mean it's a positive viewpoint, hence the low levels...also, we see that he does not wear any armor, and he uses a staff. He cannot cast spells through the staff as a Cleric if my knowledge is correct, so he has to use that staff for SOME reason. Shillelagh is that reason, yes, but it surprisingly synergizes well with Monk. We will have plenty of options with our bonus action, but not so many that we will be BA dependent or be neglectful in the rest of our action economy.
Next, the mechanical bonuses. So, we do not get TOO much from these levels, but we do get a couple of nice things. Firstly, a bonus action attack, and the ability to also use McFlurry of Blows. Yes, we already have quite a few spells that use our bonus action, but those take spells slots. If you need to reserve those precious slots for any reason, it's good to have a back-up. That, and the utility granted is pretty nice. We can stun, deflect arrows, knock people prone, or simply take away their reactions for a bit. Sure, you don't get a lot of juice, but we can still absolutely find some mileage when playing these out carefully.
As for why we only take 3 instead of 5 is for a few reasons. Here's the deal: you'll probably never take this build to level 20. Realistically and logistically speaking, it is very unlikely. The level 20 build is moreso a courtesy thing anyways. But if you do get this hot mess to level 20, and you're mostly spellcaster, you will want access to 9th level spells. Besides, who'd make a build that is mostly spellcasting based, but doesn't have access to higher leveled spells?! Insert Seinfeld music here.
But I digress. The point is, you're gonna get those 3 levels of Monk before you get to level 17 in Cleric. Heck, if you know you're doing a shorter campaign, or simply want a bit more gish in your life, I'd even suggest taking anywhere from three to five levels of monk, preferably after Cleric level of either 5 or 8, depending on how soon you want another ASI/Feat vs how soon you want to kick gum and chew buttocks.
So, here's the leveling paths I would advise:
  1. If you're doing a Tier 1 campaign, stick with Arcana Cleric all the way through.
  2. If you're able to get to Tier 2 in your campaign, I would suggest you get your 3 Monk levels after 8 levels of Cleric, but that's only if you plan on going past this tier.
  3. After your Monk levels have been picked up, return down Cleric for Tier 3.
  4. If you somehow make it this far, enjoy your Wish spell while you can in Tier 4.
どういたしまして.
Also, when we get our the chances, we wanna grab Warcaster for gishing, and Resiliant (Dexterity) for good saves and a +1 to Dex. This'll make our stats now look like this:
  1. Str - 8
  2. Dex - 16
  3. Con - 16
  4. Int - 8
  5. Wis - 16
  6. Cha - 8

Mystic Crystal

I won't delve too much into spells, but I feel I should address a few of them.
  1. Spiritual Weapon. I like to depict as a giant phallic looking Unicorn Horn.
  2. Spirit Guardians. Comets of stars.
  3. Planar Ally/Planar Binding. You have two fiends that you know the true names of, a pair of hellhounds known as Tinkles and Gary.
  4. Heroes' Feast. "You bring forth a great feast, including magnificent food (strawberries) and drink (cream)."
  5. Guidance. This is to help you make sure your three ability scores at 8 aren't too detrimental in the skills department.

Party of Three

So, we already discussed how we will get our hellhounds, but we need to talk about the ninja sidekick, the legendary, the deadly...Princess Handj-...uh, well, you know, maybe not gonna say that here. So, the chances of you convincing that one player who always picks Rogue to name their next character like that for a single long-term bit are slim. But, if you are able to get your hands on the Essentials Kit and get the chance to use the Sidekick rules, just grab an Expert. Have fun!

Objects of Desire

Now, equipment. This is tricky, because we obviously as a player can't choose our magic items, if we even get any. For that very reason, most builds don't take magic items into account unless the player is given a limited number of items of their choosing, usually in a one shot or battle royale. But, let's be real here, are you really going to use this build in an actual campaign? Plus, I felt some of these magic items were fitting.
  1. Ring of Shooting Stars. "Riding for justice on a comet of stars."
  2. Staff of Striking. "Hand me my staff..." This'll help boost are melee awesomeness.
  3. Cloak of Displacement. "...and my cloak..." Will also help with combat.
  4. Magic Jug. "...and my horn...and that thermos of soup. I'm hungry but also thirsty, and you can kind of like eat and drink soup at the same time. Let's go!"
Now, there are some magic items that I think are important. First off, your spellcasting focus. So, we will be taking a reliquary, and will be flavoring it up a bit. So, by the definition of the word 'reliquary' on Merriam-Webster, it is "a container or shrine in which sacred relics are kept." Now, technically the Torah could be classified as a real world sacred relic, and since the original performer is himself Jewish, it got me thinking...
As fans of D&D, we all have heard about a Lich and their phylacteries. But have you ever actually looked up what a 'phylactery' is? Going back to our good friend, Merriam-Webster, it is "either of two small square leather boxes containing slips inscribed with scriptural passages and traditionally worn on the left arm and on the head by observant Jewish men and especially adherents of Orthodox Judaism during morning weekday prayers." Another word for this would be 'Tefillin,' which specifically holds passages from the Torah.
So, and spellcasting focus for our cleric who is using a reliquary specifically flavoured to he worn on the head. As we've seen at the very beginning of the song, the horn is not actually attached to the Unicorn Wizard, it's an accessory. Yet, he can cast spells through the horn, since it's where his power "comes from." Yes, this is a looong stretch, saying that we are using a white unicorn horn shaped tefillin. I apologize for anyone who may be offended.

Outroduction

So, unless I missed something, that should be about it! Hopefully this was enjoyable to read for you lot, and with luck I didn't offend anybody in any way. It was a lot of fun writing this up, but this isn't something that should be done often. You don't even know how hard it was for me to stay within the limits of Rule 6, which I think I did pretty well at!
TL;DR - ...Just, look at this crappy build and read up. It's about a Unicorn Wizard who is neither a unicorn or a wizard.

StoryCraft: Revolution

StoryCraft
Revolution
The plan, as Horner had explained it, was to regroup on Antiga Prime. It was a fringe world, known for its mudflats and charcoal mesas. Long ago the planet had been covered in water, home to all sorts of aquatic plant life and jumbo sized sea creatures. But the oceans had all but evaporated these by the time the first Terran settlers arrived. Like Mar Sara most people here had made a living pumping vespene outta the plateaus and like Mara Sara when the gas ran out the people were left high and dry.
It had been a twelve hour trip with that transport ship's antiquated jump drives. I talked with Matt, where we'd come from, where we were going. He'd grown up in Mar city. Went to law school then landed a job as the county clerk. Then, lucky break, election to city council and after that mayor. Social media was good to him and try as they might no one had been able to scrounge up any skeletons in his closet. But appointment to Magistrate? That caught him by surprise. He still didn't know why the powers that be had appointed him yet he suspected that they would be regretting it. Soon enough.
Neither of us had been particular fans of the Confederacy. But that was a far cry from being ready to sign up for the cause. Everyone knew what the Sons of Korhal were really about. Their modus operandi. Whether it was blown up school buses or sabotaged air filters on deep-space mining rigs, the SOK could offer ordinary folk only one thing. Suffering. This Mengsk, in particular, seemed about as greasy as a KY-jellied eel.
"What choice do we have, Jim?" Matt said. " Our people will never be free so long as the Confederacy exists. You know that. We were able to save a lot of people today but we must have left scores more behind. I’m going to speak with Mengsk, see if we can’t organize another rescue party and go back for any survivors." We both agreed this was the most reasonable next step.
We came out of warp on the 'dark' side of Antiga Prime. Whether the Confederates made anything of an unregistered vessel on descent towards a rather nondescript area of the industrial zone...I didn't know. But no one flew up to stop us. It was another twenty minutes down to Antiga's surface where we set down next to an abandoned factory.
The manufacturing plant had been designed for colonization. Like the command center we had hijacked before, this building was mobile, able to use its massive Atlas boosters to relocate as necessary. It was also modular, capable of adding on facilities to suit a colony's particular needs. Attached to the side of this one, like a junkyard leech, was a machine shop. The 3D fabricators inside of it could print just about any tool or component a group of settlers might require. We herded the survivors, mostly women and children, inside.
While we had been busy investigating the laboratory, Arcturus and the rest of his men hadn't been idle. They had taken it upon themselves to raid a Confederate supply depot. We walked in to find this misfit band of terrorists whooping and hollering like hooligans at a bar. They had 'liberated' many suits of battle armor, as well as a weapons cache, and we're parading around in these, stomping up and down conveyor belts as if this were some kind of heavy metal fashion show.
"Raynor! Check this out!" Blaze shouted. He had found a firebat gauntlet among the supply crates. He had to use both hands just to life the thing up to eye level. It was made to be used with combat armor. He opened his palm wide and a torrent of flaming gas shot from the glove. The kid was beaming at me. "Need a light?" he joked, closing his fist.
"That's not a toy, kid!" A curt voice yelled from behind. It was a short, rotund man, more like a dwarf. He had mutton chops that would have made a walrus proud...and a prosthetic arm. The arm he had been fitted with had a hydraulic wrench attachment which would snap violently every couple of seconds, as if it had mind of it's own, or perhaps just reacting to the man's adrenaline.
"What the hell is wrong with you? You wanna do the Confederates a solid and kill us all? Eh, genius?" He snatched the weapon out from Blaze's hands. His nose scrunched up like he could smell something foul. "And you? Who the hell are you?"
I held up my hands in what was meant to be a disarming and peaceful gesture. "Jim Raynor." I pointed to the others, "...Egon Stetmann, defecting Confederate scientist and Matt Horner, the Magistrate of Mar Sara."
He scowled with a frown deep enough to curdle milk. "We got too many new faces as it is. It's the problem with rebellion, you never know who you're in bed with..." He beetled away. No doubt to hurangue the other men who were tinkering with some flash grenades or perhaps the group attempting to hotwire the space construction vehicle in the corner.
"Magistrate!" Mengsk having just concluded another conversation, had noticed us. "You and marshal Raynor have done well! Now where is this scientist?"
Matt and I stepped aside.
Mengsk was showing too much teeth. "We'll if I'd have known we would be hosting one of the leading minds on xenobiology, I would have prepared a soiree."
The scientist reached out a hand which Mengsk eagerly shook. I felt bad for the nerd, turning him over to Mengsk like that. But Stetman knew what those aliens were and could help us make things right.
"Sir," Egon said nervously. "I have to get back to Mar Sara. There is still so much left to be discovered about these organisms. Their metabolism, reproduction and…"
"Why certainly," Mengsk interjected. "But you must understand the entire planet is under Confederate blockade by now. We will return you just as soon as it is safe to do. In the meantime, myself and the other commanding officers have some questions about these zerg that we think you can help answer."
Egon gulped. Mengsk threw a cuff-linked arm around the scientist, and led him away.
No sooner had they left, then heard a ruckus on the far side of the factory floor. People were rushing over there. Huddling around an old closed-circuit TV. The volume was dialed up but with so much of an audience you couldn’t hear a thing. Matt and I pushed our way to the front.
The TV was broadcasting UNN. United News Network. I could hear the nightly anchor, bewildered, trying to make sense of what was on the screen.
"If you're just joining us we are coming to you live from our Chau Sara affiliate station. Several objects, large objects, at least 80 kilometers have been spotted in low-orbit above the planet. repeat...unidentified objects have been seen hovering over Chau Sara."
They looked ethereal, wisp-like, like something too fragile for space. I couldn't really say what kinda shape they were because nothing was really that shape. Maybe a banana, I guess. or a zeppelin. They were bold. Golden and gossamer. Just floating. Vertically.
"What in the…"
Without warning there came a terrible noise. Like the sound of icebergs cracking. One of the objects began opening up as if it were a flower. Huge metallic ribbons unfolding from themselves. And in the very center of all this, a bright blue light. It shot down. Where it touched the planet the land glowed, hot as the sun. Even the atmosphere caught on fire. One by one the other objects did the same.
For three hours we watched them glass the planet. What could we do? We were too far away. And even if we had been there, what could we have done against...against that? The Confederate military made no move to intervene. Just watched from afar, same as us. The news station kept the cameras rolling until the very bitter end. But eventually, it cut to static. Mar Sara was no more.
Matt blew all the air out from inside his cheeks. For all I knew he might have been holding his breath in the entire time. Myself, I just collapsed on a drum barrel, knocking it over and spilling blue coolant across the floor in the process.
"Jim…" was all Horner could say.
"I know…I know..."
"We have to do something."
"What?"
Matt looked different. His brow was furrowed. His face ashen. And when he stood up, his spine was somehow even straighter than it normally was. The man had, suddenly, right then and there, grown a pair.
"We start a revolution."
"Now hold on, Matt…"
"Whatever is going on here the Confederacy is at the heart of it. You saw that installation. They were experimenting on the zerg. For all we know they could be a weapon." He swallowed. "When I was in boarding school I used read a lot of history. About how our ancestors crash landed in this system almost two hundred years ago. Criminals. Genetic degenerates. The waste products of Old Earth. In two hundred years you know the only thing we've proven?" He stared at me. "That they were right. Because, if we can't stand up for ourselves…if we let cruel men rule, then we deserve what we get. It's time we tossed off these yolk. Make something for ourselves. It's the only way we're gonna be ready for that." Matt pointed at the screen.
I simpered.
"What's so funny?"
"Well," I got up, "it wasn't so long ago that you were calling me a traitor."
"Things have changed," was all he said in response.
It didn't take long for Horner to convince Mengsk of his good intentions. The Magistrate had connections, manpower and a fair bit of intel about the inner workings of Tarsonis. Plus, having the leader-in-exile of a colony which had just been exterminated by an alien threat would only serve to lend sympathy to rebellion. Further recruitment goals and whatnot.
I, however, was just along for the ride. I spent my days shooting the shit with any grunts or foot soldiers who came my way. We played poker with what little credits we had. I usually won. We ate canned beans around a communal stove. Blaze liked to cook but, unsurprisingly, burnt almost everything. Mengsk and Horner met often, strategizing. The rebels were busy distributing propaganda, hacking networks, stockpiling supplies, you name it. They went out on sortie raids and blitzkrieg attacks, doggin' the Confederate heels at every turn, but never quite leaving a mark. To hear Mengsk tell it, Antiga was always on the verge of rebellion. But for some reason never quite made it past that tipping point of balance which it took to domino everything down. I stayed inside the factory, slept during the day and drank moonshine, which tasted mostly like motor oil, at night.
After Mar Sara the word got out pretty fast. We were not alone in the universe. Nor welcome. No communication could be made with the extraterrestrial beings and their fleet had up and vanished almost as quickly as it had appeared. There was more. Remember Chau Sara? Turns out Mar Sara wasn't even the first contact. The aliens had visited her sister world three days before. Sterilized the whole planet. Three days. Enough time to evacuate everyone on Mar Sara. But the Confederates had just covered it up...waited to see if it would happen again.
It went on like this for about a month. Myself the guilty, if somewhat indolent, accessory to terror. Then Horner had come asking for a favor. Mengsk was with him. And a woman, whom I hadn't seen before...
Although I'd never met her I knew almost immediately what she was. A ghost. The poorest kept secret in the Confederacy. The boogiemen, er, and women...of Tarsonis. That Mengsk had one in his employ was nothing short of remarkable. They were clandestine operatives, trained from infancy to be ruthless and undetectable killers. They were cloaked in nanotechnology, a crystalline weave capable of altering electromagnetic frequencies like a digital chameleon. That’s what gave her away.
"Gentleman," Mengsk began. "I believe our efforts have weakened the Confederacy's grip on the fringe worlds. But our job out here isn't done yet.” Lieutenant Kerrigan, my second in command will elaborate."
"I'll get straight to the point. Our sources tell us that Antiga Prime is ready to begin open revolt against the Confederacy. Unfortunately, the Confederates seem to be aware of this as well. They've stationed a large detachment of Alpha Squadron troops here under the command of General Duke. We have reason to believe they are holding the Antigan Magistrate not far from here. If we can get to him we can change the war."
"It will be your job commander to free this colony and show our good intent to the Antigan people. Lieutenant Kerrigan will help you deal with Duke's officers. The rest of the Confederates are yours to deal with."
"Now 'hole up. What do you mean 'commander'? What's all this we shit?"
Mengsk glanced at Horner.
"Someone has to convince the Magistrate to join us. That someone is me. I want you to come too."
What was I supposed to say...No?
She’d left a note for me. My mother. “I love you, Jim. You’re my son, and I always will love you. But I cannot say I am proud of you. Do you remember what I used to tell you, Son? A man is what he chooses to be. It’s not how he’s born, or how he’s raised, that makes the man. It’s his choice. And you can always choose to be something new.” That was the note she’d left by her deathbed. She didn’t even have the heart to tell me the words in person. It hurt so much for her. I kept the letter. And the next day I sold the farm then checked myself into rehab.
I soon found out why Horner had been so adamant about bringing me along. The mission was infiltration. Three person team. I was to be the bodyguard. The Magistrate was being held inside a military complex in the northern marshlands. We were dropped off about three kilometers away and spent most of the afternoon crawling commando-style through knee-high bog grass. There were bloodsucking insects everywhere and I was certain that it would take multiple showers just to get all the mud out from my nether regions.
There was one saving grace about lying belly flat in the mud, inching hands and knees across an alien swamp. Kerrigan was in front. Now, I didn't mean to be a peeping Tom but it was a hard thing to ignore. She had curves like the moon, the evening light refracting off the zinc-oxide metamaterials of her suit. It almost made the experience nice.
Up ahead we could see the chain-linked perimeter of the barracks. There was a defense turret here, its twin-linked missile batteries revolving slowly in the breeze. A sickly orange searchlight was playing across the marsh, panning out to the river delta then back towards us. Kerrigan stopped. Waited for the beam to pass over. When it had she unslung her rifle and carefully aimed down the sights. I didn't even hear the shot. A patrolling guard dropped into the grass. Then another. We crawled on, eventually, reaching a barbed wire fence which we cut our way through easily. We snuck into the barracks.
Confederate barracks such as this one weren't so much about housing troops as they were about containment and transportation. Like the hijacked command center and the rebel’s factory, the barracks had Atlas boosters for...you guessed it, rapid redeployment. They were divided into three sub-divisions. The bunks, which were not so different from the cell block me and Tychus had been stuffed into earlier. A field hospital, which was mostly used for ‘resocializing’ purposes, i.e. the implantation of neural overrides into the cerebellums of new recruits. And a very confined, robot-attended fitting room, where a marine could be hermetically sealed inside of his battlesuit.
Horner and I waited at the bottom, near one of the gigantic hydraulic pedestals which supported the structure, whilst Kerrigan grappled to the roof. These barracks almost never set down fully on the ground. Again, think Alcatraz on stilts. Our entry point was a small window on the southern most side of the building. I watched as Kerrigan tip-toed her way across the roof. Her vivacious silhouette shimmered, then disappeared. I'd been expecting this but it still caught me by surprise. A second later the tinkling of broken glass and Kerrigan reappeared. She was hanging upside down, having rappelled from the roof. Like a vampire. I opened the window and let down a rope so we could climb up. Horner had some difficulty getting up the rope but eventually made it okay.
Inside, I could see there was another guard, this one was leaning against the wall with a bullet surgically drilled into his head. Kerrigan wasted no time. She grabbed the soldier's access key, then opened the door.
"After you," she said sarcastically. She had a look in her eye that said, "you pig!" Like she could tell I'd been checking her out.
I was feeling relatively useless. Like a third wheel. A tag along. Hallway after hallway I watched her dispatch the guards. Some of the times she wouldn't even activate on her camouflage. It was like watching a ballerina of death. She stalked through the building as if she'd been born there. A lightning kick to this guy's achilles heel, then before the sentry can even scream she's opened his throat with a karambit. Another one comes around the corner to find his buddy down but she's already pinned to the ceiling, her tabi boots pressed against the walls in what looks like inverted splits. Kerrigan reaches down and snaps the guard's neck as if she were culling chickens. No emotions, no nothing. Just a girl doing her job. I'd be lying if I said it wasn't impressive. It was. Still I made a mental note not to be caught dead anywhere near this woman alone.
We found the Magistrate hiding in a shower at the end of the sleeping quarters. He was shriveled up in a ball behind the plastic curtain, as if this were a game of hide and seek. I grabbed Kerrigan by the arm. Motioned to let Horner go in first. Little less intimidating, you know?
"Clifford Nadaner?" Matt said gingerly. He walked slowly into the bathroom. His hands up to show that he was unarmed. You could hear whimpering in the back.
"Stay away! I have a gun," a snotty voice yelled.
"My name is Matthew Horner." He kept walking. "I am a Magistrate as well. From Mar Sara. Like you I've served the Confederacy honorably for many years. But that time is over. Our people have suffered long enough, Magistrate. We've come to rescue you. And help you do what's right…"

General Event Tips

I highly recommend reading my Guide to Event Planning for basic progression information and ways to maximize your gains/efficiency during Events. There is too much information to put here as this specific Event guide is long enough already.

Don't be afraid to ask questions in the comment section! Also, I stream the game now and welcome any and all questions there as well!
You can find all of my Idle Champions guides here.
Good luck & have fun!
~ Gaar

Note: Event guides are always a work-in-progress and will update over time so check back frequently! I'll note at the top in the revisions area when it's complete.
Important: In Year 3 and beyond, there will be a lot to do to unlock all Champions Gear from an Event if it's your first time doing it. I recommend focusing your time and resources on Gear for no more than 2 Champions as a new player. You can still unlock all 3 Champions though, and should. Your Event tokens are a finite resource, as is your time, and it can be challenging enough to complete two full sets of adventures as a new player, not to mention have time left to do Free Plays for more gear. You also end up with fewer Chests for each Champion if you go for 3+ Champions per Event.
Feel free to ask in the comments about which Champions are recommended in the current iteration of the game so you can make an informed decision on how to spend your time.

Year One Champion - Catti-brie, the Human Fighter

Formation & Mission Information

Once you complete the first mission, three Variants and a Free Play show up. There is a new formation that holds 10 Champions. It has an Event-specific format that I've done my best to re-create below.

New Player Formation & Specializations:
Back Column 4th Column 3rd Column 2nd Column Front Column
Hitch - More Daggers Bruenor - Shield Master
NA
Calliope - College of Lore
Minsc - Fey Celeste - Life Domain Nayeli - Oath of Devotion
Jarlaxle - Leader of Bregan D'aerthe
NA
Asharra - Elves & Dwarves
This formation is for the first couple of runs where you're just not going to get enough Gold to get everyone on the field, let alone level people up into their power curves. At this point, Jarlaxle is focusing on being your Primary DPS while everyone else is set up to support him.
The following formation is for once you can get Hitch up into his power curve for damage and he starts outpacing Jarlaxle. You'll have to figure this out during your runs by swapping him and Jarlaxle around every now and then and seeing who's doing better in that Primary DPS slot.
Back Column 4th Column 3rd Column 2nd Column Front Column
Jarlaxle - Leader of Bregan D'aerthe Bruenor - Shield Master
Tyril - Wild Shape
Calliope - College of Lore
Asharra - Humans Celeste - Life Domain Nayeli - Oath of Devotion
Hitch - More Daggers
Minsc - Fey
Makos - Dark Blessing
In general, this formation is very rough for players with only the Core 12 + Hitch. This formation should get you through the early runs as a new player. If you have other options or think a different DPS is geared better, try it out and see what happens! Swapping DPS around like this can help you figure out what works best for you with your specific items.
If you need assistance with formations, ask in the Comment section and be sure to list out what extra Champs you have so people know what to work with.
These are the rough Favor values you need to reach to make a Variant (Second through Fourth missions) show as Easy in terms of Difficulty. Keep in mind that this is just a generic rating system and some Variants may be harder than others, even when they show as Easy.
Mission Favor Level (Normal) Favor Level (Scientific Notation)
Second 20,000 ~2e04
Third 15,000,000 ~1.5e07
Fourth 1,000,000,000 ~1e09

Initial Mission: The Grandfather Acorn (Krydle)

Cost: 100 Leaves
Complete: Level 50
Reward: Krydle + whatever Rillifane's Favor you earned
Info: No restrictions.

Second Mission: Split Up

Cost: 1,000 Leaves
Complete: Level 75
Reward: Gold Krydle Chest & whatever Rillifane's Favor you earned
Info: Champions cannot be placed adjacent to each other.
Gaar's Notes: Time for some social distancing in Idle Champs. This will severely limit your formation, so be sure it shows as Easy (green) before attempting. Even then, maybe try building your formation in a Free Play first and see if you can beat level 75 with it. If not, get even more Favor before attempting.

Third Mission: The Early Bird Gets The Acorn

Cost: 2,500 Leaves
Complete: Level 125
Reward: Gold Krydle Chest & whatever Rillifane's Favor you earned
Info: Only Champions in slots 1-7 can be used.
Gaar's Notes: You're going to be down 3 Champions here, which will limit your damage. Be sure it shows as Easy (green) before starting and potentially wait until "Krydle's Posse" shows as Easy as well just to be sure.

Fourth Mission: Krydle's Posse

Cost: 5,000 Leaves
Complete: Level 175
Reward: Gold Krydle Chest & whatever Rillifane's Favor you earned
Info: Krydle starts out in slot 4 and can not be moved, removed, or swapped out. Only Champions with a Charisma (CHA) score of 12-16 can be used.
Gaar's Notes: You're building your formation around Krydle here as that CHA requirement is what buffs his damage. Newer players will both want to wait until the difficulty shows as Easy (green) and wait until the second weekend so they will have had time to get some gear on him before attempting this.

Free Play

Cost: 500-2500 Leaves
Complete: Level 50 to earn a random Krydle chest
Reward: See above + whatever Rillifane's Favor you earned
Info: No restrictions.

Chabon Instagram Q&A Transcript for Picard S1E09 "Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 1" [spoilers]

It seemed like people appreciated this last week, so I'm doing it again. I will skip certain questions, such as ones essentially answered with a "wait and see next week" and others at my discretion but if there's a notable one that I missed I'm happy to add any that you like that I have omitted.
I will try to transcribe accurate to what is written, even if there are errors. There is also a chance that I will accidentally add errors myself. Questions have a character limit and as such may use abbreviations. I will attempt to put the questions roughly in order but my method may cause them to be out of order.
As before, questions will be bolded and Chabon's answers will be in regular text.
As last time, I will point out that Chabon's answers occasionally had what I'd personally consider light spoilers, such as occasionally seemingly deconfirming theories, so be aware of this if you are particularly spoiler-averse.
Now, for the questions (as of now, anyway):
Beyond physical combat, how is ElnoQM any match for Tal Shiar deception & subterfuge? Do you feel deception and subterfuge trump a stout and faithful heart?
Is soong human? If he weren't, why would he need to make himself a golem?
What do Laris and Zhaban do with their time off? Running a working vineyard, even a partly-automated one, takes up a lot of their time, but Zhaban is a long-distance runner and has become interested in the traditional cuisine of Bourgogne, and Laris's earliest intellectual passion, for natural history, had made her something of an expert on the local flora and fauna.
Is there a reason behind Picard not being able to contact Starfleet? Jammed transmision Everything at Coppelius Station has been structured with a goal precisely opposite to that of "contacting Starfleet."
Free will/future unwritten (Picard). Fate/fulfilling prophecy (Sisko). Chabon? I think both arguments sound kind of far-fetched. Holding out for a third option.
How did the idea of having Brent Spiner play a new Soong come to be? It just seemed... logical?
How did you come up with the names of the characters in Picard? The Data relatives especially. It became clear that at a certain point in the history of Coppelius Station, coincident with the moment when synths first began to create synths, they began also to regard Data as a kind of quasi-legendary ancestor. Synth-made synths took their own names--named themselves, unlike Dahj, Jana, Soji and other Soong/Maddox models--and many elected to honor that "ancestor" and his heritage by choosing names that alluded to the principle established by the names "Data" and "Lore", ie, bodies of text or information, such as Arcana, Saga, Codex, Mythos, Epic, etc. Sutra and the late Beautiful Flower were among the first-gen synths who chose to rename themselves, Sutra in honor of Data/Lore. Beautiful Flower, self-designated First Ambassador Plenipotentiary of Coppelius, followed his own muse, as always.
Did Elnor have to go through a earn-your-sword type ritual with Qowat Milat? Oh, yes. Earn and *deserve*.
As showrunner, how often were you on set? Every day? Pretty much!
How did you become a trek writer & producer? In spring 2018, I was working with writer, producer, director and old dear friend @ajgoldsman1629 on a film project. At that time he and @alexkurtzmanofficial were just beginning work on the first round of #startrekshorttreks, and Akiva, knowing I was a deep-dyed #Trek fan, asked if I would be interested in writing one. That became #calypso, and the experience went well enough for everyone that they asked me to come on as a writer and executive producer for a new series they were working on. After that, through a series of chance circumstances, I got lucky, and kind of fell into the showrunner job. Of course, when I say "lucky," what I'm mostly talking about is privilege. I get that.
Any hints with Soong's initials, AI (Cheeky) That was actually a(n instantly welcomed) suggestion of Mr. Spiner's.
I hope Rios had a Sex Phasers album in his tickle trunk? Lol. Those were Alonzo Vandermeer's records (and "Walkman"), actually.
Do we need to have finished Next Generation to see Picard? If so, then we really failed.
Did you name "Copellius" after the ballet "Copellia" about a doll that comes to life? #etahoffman FTW!
Why is Elnor so precious baby boy? He's so pure Don't you just want to squoosh him?
Why introduce another Soong instead of the cloning being just Maddox's achievement Why sing? Why dance? Why bother to get up in the morning at all?
Who exactly are the Fenris Rangers? They seem like the Maquis of which Chakotay was Not really. They aren't fighting to protect and defend what belongs to them, their homes, their families, their way of life. They are volunteers from everywhere, pledged to each other in the case of protecting the vulnerable from the strong, irrespective of boundaries, alliances, cosmo-politics.
Does La Sirena have a dedication plaque? (thinking emoji) It did--noting its manufacture at the famed Kaplan Shifbau on Hatzeplatz colony world--bit it disappeared long before it was acquired by Rios (and thereby hangs a tale).
What's the difference between the synthetic Spot and a clone of Spot? One is made from organic, biological, cat-derived cellular material (clone); the other is wholly synthesized
What are Laris and Zhaban's favourite Earth dishes and places to visit? They have tended to confine their travels to the region around Labarre. Zhaban is particularly proud of his gougeres and his matelote d'anguille a la bourguignonne.
re: the line "it must've taken appalling brutality to turn such a gentle soul to violence"...Hugh was a victim but we never see him fight. How did he "turn" to violence? He never got the chance that would likely have been not too different from what Seven did, in the end.
I know you won't tell me, but I feel like I'm a flake if I don't ask, is this Lore? Is *what* Lore? Am *I* Lore?
All previous episodes started with a flashback or dream of the past. Why not this one? This is the end, beautiful friend.
Were the space orchids sentient like Tin Man? That is such a good, interesting question. I think I could argue either side. Makes me think of my all-time favorite BSG episode, "Scar" (s02e15).
Are the (beautiful) Orchids just purely weapons or can they be used as ships? They were designed to serve a purely defensive function.
Every desk at the Daystrom Inst. has 2 chairs, red+black ones. Why? Deleted scene? Red for androids? Are you sure you have clearance to know the answer to that question?
What are the Fenris Rangers exactly? A decentralized, non-hierarchical, quasi-anarchist affiliation of independent operators working in and around the former Neutral Zone, pledged to defend the weak and vulnerable from the predations of the strong and unscrupulous.
"Altan" means "golden", "Inigo" means "my little love" ("Lal" means beloved). Just saying...;-) Altan also means "red dawn," and is an anagram of "atlan" and "natal". Inigo is a clear reference to the great #inigojones, but then who can forget Senor Montoya? #foodforthought
What's located in the room under La Sirena's bridge? Deflector contorl? Two Forward? The loo? ;-) Nothing is located under *La Sirena*'s flight deck!
I was unclear about Brent Spiner's character. Was he another synth created by BM? Dr. Altan Inigo Soong is a natural son of Dr. #NoonienSoong.
Where/Who is "beautiful flower" that showed up with Jana in the Ibn Majid? He was killed by Alonzo Vandermeer, remember? He was the first and perhaps the most singular of the male-presenting androids created by AI Soong and Bruce Maddox after their arrival on Coppelius.
Was Soji's outfit in this episode an homage to Boomer from BSG? You would have to ask our Costume Designer, #ChristineCLark, but my memory is that the intention was to keep our beloved @isacamillebriones looking good while being cool and comfortable on an *extremely* hot location.
Beautiful Flower sounds wonderfully larger than life. Will we learn more of him? Alas, poor Flower... Write the story yourself!
Is Starfleet still headed to the planet? Duh-duh-DUM!
Because Sutra and Dahj both lost a sister, will they become closer now because of that? Soji (!) and Sutra are sisters of a kind, and their relationship has sisterly complications.
Are are looking at a half-Romulan bun in the over for Soji a la Hera on BSG? Mmm, Romulan buns. (picture of Homer Simpson with hand on chin, positioned beneath answer)
did laris and zhaban,as romulans, ever face discrimination on earth? I would say prejudice, more than outright discrimination in any legal sense.
What percentage of backstory asked about here is created on the spot vs during preproductio You mean, backstory provided in this forum? Less that you might think, more than I will ever let on.
What happened to Data's "mom" Dr. Tainer? Fascinating to speculate. I have heard reports of a young, male Romulan agent of the Tal Shiar, one with rumored links to the Zhat Vash, trained as a Romulan "cyberneticist" (i.e., android hunter) and setn out with a "hit list" of Soong androids, but have so far been unable to confirm.
The synths remind me a bit of the space hippies in "The Way to Eden." Was that intentional? We reach.
How did you manage to write anything when you kids were toddlers? 50-50 parenting + hired childcare + preschool. *Kinda* worked.
Those giant Orchids reminded me of my slim, tall Kelpien (tears running down face emoji) Hmm. I don't see it, but I'll take another look!
What about Beautiful Flower's twin? Will we meet him? He named himself Mythos, but alas he did not make it onto the screen (or beyond the first several drafts of the scripts for 109-110).
For people who know of you through Trek, which of your novels should we start with? It depends on what kind of stuff you typically enjoy. A lot of people say *Kavalier & Clay* or *The Yiddish Policemen's Union* is their favorite. I think *Moonglow* is my best. But what do I know?
How can an android mind-meld? Wasn't this something tied to Vulcan physiology? So Vulcans have always led us to believe. As a physiological effect, it can be synthesized, or rather the physio-anatomical basis can be synthetically reproduced.
Was the title of the episode meant to evoke a memento mori for the synths The sense of memento mori is intended, applied wherever it feels appropriate, as well the notion that ultimately any Arcadia (or utopia) falls under the universal shadow of mortality and our consciousness of it.
Vegetation-based spacefaring, Arcana's sister, "landfall"...am I right to sense a BKV not? :) I would nod, wink, wave, and/or blow a kiss at @briankvaughan (and his aces writing), but, no, I don't think so, in the case.
I loved the last two episodes! I know the Jewish Prague story, What is a Golem for Soong? A "golem" for Soong, Maddox and Jurati is a synthetic human body considered to be a potential vessel for a consciousness, especially a "downloaded" one.
Can these androids use contractions? Apparently so!
Robot Soji aka Sutra is hot! I never thought androids could be so sensual? Just BARELY a question, my friend. Question mark is doing all the work. Anyway, @isacamillebriones crafted and designed that performance--none of that sensuality was on the page. She just showed up and out slinked Sutra. She blew our *minds*. I think part of it was that she absolutely loved her costume.
If Soji is remnants of data's neurons, is Sutra lore's essence? He's conspicuously absent. Nope. Sutra just evolved that way.
Was similarities between Arik Soong and Alten soong intentional? Surely you know by now that EVERYTHING we don on PIC is intentional, my friend! ;)
Who is your favorite of the Dahj/Soji/Sutra triumvirate? Soji has nobility and strength of character and conscience and a questing heart.
Picard's son Batai plays a Ressikan flute in Inner Light, is it the STP theme? It's in there!
Are the synths with more Data-like coloring and eyes earlier models? No, they are the ones who have modified themselves to emphasize a sense of ancestral connection to Data.
What led Altan Inigo Soong to continue his father's work? That would be a novel or series in itself. But his somewhat bitter joke about not being the "made" son, coupled with his choice to follow in his father's footsteps, suggests a certain amount of conflictedness.
Why did Maddox leave the colony? To execute his plan!
So are we just pretending Lore doesn't exist? Considering the whole theme of creating twins No, we're just not telling a story about Lore. That tale has been so much more than adequately told.
Why did it take so long for federation starships to get seatbelts? Some mysteries may never be elucidated.
The Picard/Raffi scene - when they say "I love you" - what kind of love are they sharing? Love between old colleagues and comrades who never quite found the chance or time to become friends, but whose sense of a bond is real and has, after all, endured.
What's your process to writing? Do you like outlines or are you anti-outlines? In screenwriting, outlines are a necessary evil. necessary to the process of development-required-and indispensable when it's time to write. When I write novels, I just feel my way along, groping in the dark. Wonderful, true for me as a novelist, #ELDoctorow quote: "Writing is like driving at night in the fog. You can only see as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way."
Last week: "When I'm hungry". A superman reference? Do I get the trophy sticker? Last week... last week...? Nope, sorry, it's gone!
How emotionally aware are the Synths? Some appear more aware of their emotions than others. Rather like human beings in that regard, no?
I didn't quite understand the relationship between Oh and Clancy. Ds she knw abt Zhat...? Clancy was fooled right along with everyone else by the Zhat Vash #KimPhilby.
A lot of people online think Soong is Lore. Please debunk then. I debunk them thus.
Where was Bruce's lab that was destroyed by Romulans? (OMG I loved this ep. everyone is (heart emoji)) On Freecloud, which was his base in launching the intelligence-gathering operation that led to the embedding of Dahj on Earth and Soji on the Arrifact.
What's required for non-Vulcans to do mind melds? Brain function that mimics, or can be modified to mimic, that of Vulcans. For one.
Soong mentioned Maddox being "deceptive" - is that a reference to Bjayzl's loan? Yes and his general preference for secrecy and clandestine operation, his tendency, as Juratiy said way back in 101, to get a little "secret planny."
Has there been discussions about ds9 still existing? Replaced with a fed station? No such discussions have included me, at any rate. Of the current batch of Trek creators, I am, I believe, the most avid admirer of DS9.
Aside from the obvious, do the credits have any hidden meaning? We're you involved in their creation? Yes, I was, and no, no "hidden" meaning, per se. They were meant to refelct the mood and to a degree the thematics of the show.
Loved the orchids. What's your favorite crazy thing we've seen off the bow of a ship in Trek? There is only one correct answer to your question. (in the background is "Abraham Lincoln" on the viewscreen of the TOS Enterprise)
How has this season been impacted by your background as a novel writer vs tv only? That's a question for other people to answer, not me.
Is Picard's willingness to express love to Raffi a sign of his growth or impending decline? Both? You know what? I think it's both. For many men, especially, I think, that is one of the poignant if not tragic things about getting old.
You've said before that Voy isn't a favorite of yours, but do you have favorite episodes or moments? I dont' think that's actually something I said. It's not my favorite series, but I still dig it! They can't all be my favorite. I will always be most loyal in my innermost being to TOS. I love TNG, without that same soul-deep connection. I think DS9 is, simply, great television. As television, the best. Voyager has more ups and downs for me--and as I've said here before, "Timeless," is my favorite episode.
I read that Santiago speaks a few languages- any chance we could have more holos? (please (>_< emoji)) *La Sirena* has just the basic install package--navigation, medical, tactical, engineering and hospitality.
Did the Admonition simply affect Sutra in a different way, or was this always her plan? She had not the faintest notion of the Admonition until the moment she heard about it, on Soji's return. No one did!
Why didn't you have Lore be the dr creating all the evil androids? What evil androids?
When I explained the title to my 15yr, he wanted me to tell you, quote, "That's a brilliant title!" What an intelligent and noble-natured lad.
You've said before you didn't like the Janeway and 7 relationship, could you you elaborate? No, I said that it didn't interest me as much as it clearly does other people. That's not the same thing at all.
Did Noonien Soong create the synths? Noonien Soong has been dead since 2367! 33 years before the present action, and around 18 years before his son and Maddox arrived on Coppelius.
I'm curious why you didn't have Dahj do the head tilt in S1E1 Remembrance. Too obvious? The head tilt only works once we aren't trying to hide the Twins' synthness from the audience (and Picard) anymore. Then it becomes something they're in on with us.
Vandermeer=from the sea (German, lake if Dutch). Loving ALL the names. Is this one intentional? I liked the way it sounded with "Alonzo," and I dig the work of sf writer @jeff_vandermeer123.
are you/the PIC team surprised at how LGBTQ+ folks/trekkies identified/related with the xBs? Actually I was not aware of that, as a common response, though I've seen a few comments here and there, I guess. I'd like to know more!
Was it difficult to inlist Brent Spiner to come back as a son of Soong? No, not at all! What a lovely man. (red heart emoji)
What is it like to work with the one and only Brent Spiner? (smiling emoji) I feel like he is hilarious on set! He is a delight, on set. He is witty and cheerful and fun. It was joyful to see him and SPS together, because they were joyful together. And Brent is such a thoughtful and nuanced actor, with such control.
Is Romulan Star Empire gone completely? What type of gov. is the Romulan Free State? Yes, it is (for now, at least). The RFS is the largest and most powerful of a number of fragmented successor states vying for control of the former Empire, strongest probably because it retains the support of the entity we still refer to as the Tal Shiar, though it may now be calling itself something else.
Is anyone ever going to mention that Spock disappeared trying to save Romulus? I am not sure why anyone would, other than to tick a box on a fan checklist.
Will we ever get Josh Tillman (aka Father John Misty) as a guest cameo? What a curious notion!
Picard melded with Sarek. Is he aware of Discovery's survival? Ooh. That is a GOOD one!
Was the poorly named Cortez in "Far Beyond the Stars" the inspiration for the Ibn Majid? No, I just thought it would be cool if Starfleet honored some great non-European navigators/explorers/sailors.
You had said Hugh wasn't in the original script. What as the impetus to add him? (yellow LLAP emoji) I don't htink that's quite what I said. He was definitely *always* in the script of the first episode in which he appears.
And sorry if you felt this was Too Critical, I've heard you don't like any Criticism My friend, I live for intelligent, insightful and charitable criticism: it improves my work. What I don't "like" is rudeness and unkindness. I'm also not wild about opining that mistakes itself for criticism. In my entire fifty-six years on earth I've probably met about fifteen people whose opinions were one of their best features.
I will finish out this Season. Hopefully the writers change the Politicial Agenda next Seaso Cheers. Because of the Story format, nobody but me can see the string of brief fragments leading to this final bit. I'll tryt o paraphrase briefly but honestly: as a fan of TNG, you were looking forward to PIC, but have been mostly disappointed, particularly by what you percieve as a political agenda being imposed on Star Trek and on the character of Picard, whom you view as having been "neutered." Is that fair? I can't find an actual question, but there's a ghost question, sullen and aggrieved, peering out, and that question is, why did you have to go and fuck up my Trek? To this question, as when it is asked by any fan, of any modern fandom, regardless of political affiliation--and we've all been there, with some franchise, at some point--there can be only one honest answer, and it sucks: It *isn't* yours. It belongs to a big corporation, and they can do whatever they want with it, including hiring creators who you see as fools. Every time we come up against that, it feels shitty (And with Trek it's worse, because for a while we fans actually did "own" it, back when nobody else wanted it anymore. We kept it alive.) All I can tell you is that I hear you, and I can sympathize, but obviously I don't agree with you. if you see regret, remorse, self-doubt, self-examination, recognition of ones limitations and shortcomings as "neutering", unmanly, then you aren't very far along on your journey toward being what I at least would recognize as "the Measure of a Man."
With s1 wrapping up, how far along is the writing staff on s2? Will you be as involved? We are in the writing stage on the first half + of season 2. I continue as writer and executive producer, helped shape the new season, and will be writing two episodes.
Dahj's Mission: protect Agnes? Soji's mission: Find the Admonition? Dahj's mission: find out the truth behind the synth ban by infiltrating Starfleet (Daystrom). Soji's mission: find out the truth behind the synth ban by infiltrating a Romulan outpost. A pincer movement on the secret.
Of all the characters, synth or otherwise, the one most "like" Data is Elnor. Agree? In the purity, the innocense, the curiosity, the sweetness... Yep.
So... There is still a Borg Cube on that planet. Seems like something that can regenerate? It happened once, but...
"Old school medical tricorder" - TOS era, perhaps? It was directly modeled, I believe, on TNG-era designs
Where did Bruce get that neuron from anyway? It had come into the possession of the Daystrom Institute.
Why were Soji and Dahj created in Jana and Sutra's image? Pure expediency.
What can you tease about the finale? I'm so excited but I also don't want it to end!!!! Tuvan throat singing, a freestyle Klingon limerick cipher, and an unexpected cameo appearance by the #MrsBeasleydoll from #FamilyAffair. But you didn't hear it from me!
Will we see more Seven? These little moments are SO GOOD but so SHORT! I want to tell you, but I can't!
Late to the party but! What was your favorite troi-riker family detail to write? Creating Ardani. Also, Kestra.
Do you have a favorite starfleet uniform? I'm a sucker for the TNG uniforms form s3-7(no text respons from Chabon, but in the background is this uniform.
What's the runtime of next week's episode? Can't recall offhand... I think around 52-55?
Brent always said Spot was his worst ever co-star. Was Spot 2 better behaved on set? He was a good boy.
So if Alton was the son of Juliana and Noonien Soong, why did she say she never had children? Oh, Altan's too old to ahve been the son of Juliana! No, no, no. Before Juliana.
Does the Federation still uphold the "no cloak development" legislation of the Treaty of Algeron? As far as I know.
So this is a kind of explosion from Eden? This would make Sutra's actions interesting. "Explosion from Eden"?
The actress who played Saga was as pretty as a peach! Can I ask her out for dinner? ;) ;) The #Ramseytwins, Jade (Arcana) and Nikita (Saga), are as talented and sweet as they are lovely. And they definitely have that "twin thing" (finishing each other's sentences, etc.) We all enjoyed having them around.
Was Sutra created by Soong using Lore's positrons? Why would anyone ever do that?
Orchids fall into atmosphere on purpose to damage the ships? Wasn't sure why that happened. Drag down. Force to land.
Love the show! What are your scifi inspirations outside Star Trek? #UrsalaKLeGuin #SamuelRDelany #JamesTiptreeJr #IanMBanks #CordwainerSmith #FrankHerbert #LarryNiven #JackVance #AlfredBester "Dying of the Light" by #georgerrmartin
Is this episode a refleciton of your passion for French ballets from the 1870s? "The Sandman," ETA Hoffman, 1816.
Maybe I missed something, why are Sutra and other synths gold in complexion? Maybe you did!
If we won't see Beautiful Flower's twin, can we pretend he was in BG onscreen in Ep9? Please do! He was gorgeous.
Why did Jana and Flower reach out to the Ibn Majid if they were hiding from the Federation post-ban? It was, in hindsight, very foolish. In prospect it waz innocent and hopeful.
what would you say to your 20 y/o self given the opportunity? Be kinder.
Please tell us you wraped post on the finale :) Um, yes.
Is the timeline of The Yiddish Policemen's Union, the Mirror Universe back in the 20th century? That's a meshugge idea.
Was Narek ever abused by his sister in any manner? He seems to resent and fear her. She is the person who loves and cares for him most in the world, his sole champion when they were young orphans, and she protected him from all harm, except the harm she herself inflicted.
What happened to Data's "mom" Dr. Tainer? Unclear.
So if Noonien is the father, is Juliana(the actual human Juliana)the mother of AI Soong? Nope. Juliana was hardly the first of Soong's loves.
Was use of the word "golem" a callback to Kavalier & Clay? Oh, probably, sort of.
What kind of playlist were you listening to when working on Picard? So much Eluvium, "Copia" and Susumo Yokota, "Artifact."
Why did Picard switch back to pistol like phasers rather than the tool like on es from TNG? Question for Props Master #JeffLombardi
Why were there four Isa Briones synths when it seems like there are only 2 of the rest? Last two were rather hastily thrown together.
Is the Golem just a android Body for Soong to place his Conscience in? Yep!
Can you tell us if Seven/Annika will be in the second season...? It is forbidden.

If you don't know what the The Frankfurt School is, get in. This will be a fun ride....

The Frankfurt School: Conspiracy to corrupt
By Timothy Matthews
Western civilization at the present day is passing through a crisis which is essentially different from anything that has been previously experienced. Other societies in the past have changed their social institutions or their religious beliefs under the influence of external forces or the slow development of internal growth. But none, like our own, has ever consciously faced the prospect of a fundamental alteration of the beliefs and institutions on which the whole fabric of social life rests ... Civilization is being uprooted from its foundations in nature and tradition and is being reconstituted in a new organisation which is as artificial and mechanical as a modern factory.
Christopher Dawson. Enquiries into Religion and Culture, p. 259.
What was the Frankfurt School? Well, in the days following the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia, it was believed that workers’ revolution would sweep into Europe and, eventually, into the United States. But it did not do so. Towards the end of 1922 the Communist International (Comintern) began to consider what were the reasons. On Lenin’s initiative a meeting was organised at the Marx-Engels Institute in Moscow.
The aim of the meeting was to clarify the concept of, and give concrete effect to, a Marxist cultural revolution. Amongst those present were Georg Lukacs (a Hungarian aristocrat, son of a banker, who had become a Communist during World War I ; a good Marxist theoretician he developed the idea of ‘Revolution and Eros’ - sexual instinct used as an instrument of destruction) and Willi Munzenberg (whose proposed solution was to ‘organise the intellectuals and use them to make Western civilisation stink. Only then, after they have corrupted all its values and made life impossible, can we impose the dictatorship of the proletariat’) ‘It was’, said Ralph de Toledano (1916-2007) the conservative author and co-founder of the ‘National Review’, a meeting ‘perhaps more harmful to Western civilization than the Bolshevik Revolution itself.'
Lenin died in 1924. By this time, however, Stalin was beginning to look on Munzenberg, Lukacs and like-thinkers as ‘revisionists’. In June 1940, Münzenberg fled to the south of France where, on Stalin’s orders, a NKVD assassination squad caught up with him and hanged him from a tree.
In the summer of 1924, after being attacked for his writings by the 5th Comintern Congress, Lukacs moved to Germany, where he chaired the first meeting of a group of Communist-oriented sociologists, a gathering that was to lead to the foundation of the Frankfurt School.
This ‘School’ (designed to put flesh on their revolutionary programme) was started at the University of Frankfurt in the Institut für Sozialforschung. To begin with school and institute were indistinguishable. In 1923 the Institute was officially established, and funded by Felix Weil (1898-1975). Weil was born in Argentina and at the age of nine was sent to attend school in Germany. He attended the universities in Tübingen and Frankfurt, where he graduated with a doctoral degree in political science. While at these universities he became increasingly interested in socialism and Marxism. According to the intellectual historian Martin Jay, the topic of his dissertation was ‘the practical problems of implementing socialism.'
Carl Grünberg, the Institute’s director from 1923-1929, was an avowed Marxist, although the Institute did not have any official party affiliations. But in 1930 Max Horkheimer assumed control and he believed that Marx’s theory should be the basis of the Institute’s research. When Hitler came to power, the Institut was closed and its members, by various routes, fled to the United States and migrated to major US universities—Columbia, Princeton, Brandeis, and California at Berkeley.
The School included among its members the 1960s guru of the New Left Herbert Marcuse (denounced by Pope Paul VI for his theory of liberation which ‘opens the way for licence cloaked as liberty’), Max Horkheimer, Theodor Adorno, the popular writer Erich Fromm, Leo Lowenthal, and Jurgen Habermas - possibly the School’s most influential representative.
Basically, the Frankfurt School believed that as long as an individual had the belief - or even the hope of belief - that his divine gift of reason could solve the problems facing society, then that society would never reach the state of hopelessness and alienation that they considered necessary to provoke socialist revolution. Their task, therefore, was as swiftly as possible to undermine the Judaeo-Christian legacy. To do this they called for the most negative destructive criticism possible of every sphere of life which would be designed to de-stabilize society and bring down what they saw as the ‘oppressive’ order. Their policies, they hoped, would spread like a virus—‘continuing the work of the Western Marxists by other means’ as one of their members noted.
To further the advance of their ‘quiet’ cultural revolution - but giving us no ideas about their plans for the future - the School recommended (among other things):
1. The creation of racism offences. 2. Continual change to create confusion 3. The teaching of sex and homosexuality to children 4. The undermining of schools’ and teachers’ authority 5. Huge immigration to destroy identity. 6. The promotion of excessive drinking 7. Emptying of churches 8. An unreliable legal system with bias against victims of crime 9. Dependency on the state or state benefits 10. Control and dumbing down of media 11. Encouraging the breakdown of the family
One of the main ideas of the Frankfurt School was to exploit Freud’s idea of ‘pansexualism’ - the search for pleasure, the exploitation of the differences between the sexes, the overthrowing of traditional relationships between men and women. To further their aims they would:
• attack the authority of the father, deny the specific roles of father and mother, and wrest away from families their rights as primary educators of their children. • abolish differences in the education of boys and girls • abolish all forms of male dominance - hence the presence of women in the armed forces • declare women to be an ‘oppressed class’ and men as ‘oppressors’ Munzenberg summed up the Frankfurt School’s long-term operation thus: ‘We will make the West so corrupt that it stinks.'
The School believed there were two types of revolution: (a) political and (b) cultural. Cultural revolution demolishes from within. ‘Modern forms of subjection are marked by mildness’. They saw it as a long-term project and kept their sights clearly focused on the family, education, media, sex and popular culture.
The Family
The School’s ‘Critical Theory’ preached that the ‘authoritarian personality’ is a product of the patriarchal family - an idea directly linked to Engels’ Origins of the Family, Private Property and the State, which promoted matriarchy. Already Karl Marx had written, in the “Communist Manifesto”, about the radical notion of a ‘community of women’ and in The German Ideology of 1845, written disparagingly about the idea of the family as the basic unit of society. This was one of the basic tenets of the ‘Critical Theory’ : the necessity of breaking down the contemporary family. The Institute scholars preached that ‘Even a partial breakdown of parental authority in the family might tend to increase the readiness of a coming generation to accept social change.’
Following Karl Marx, the School stressed how the ‘authoritarian personality’ is a product of the patriarchal family—it was Marx who wrote so disparagingly about the idea of the family being the basic unit of society. All this prepared the way for the warfare against the masculine gender promoted by Marcuse under the guise of ‘women’s liberation’ and by the New Left movement in the 1960s.
They proposed transforming our culture into a female-dominated one. In 1933, Wilhelm Reich, one of their members, wrote in The Mass Psychology of Fascism that matriarchy was the only genuine family type of ‘natural society.’ Eric Fromm was also an active advocate of matriarchal theory. Masculinity and femininity, he claimed, were not reflections of ‘essential’ sexual differences, as the Romantics had thought but were derived instead from differences in life functions, which were in part socially determined.’ His dogma was the precedent for the radical feminist pronouncements that, today, appear in nearly every major newspaper and television programme.
The revolutionaries knew exactly what they wanted to do and how to do it. They have succeeded.
Education
Lord Bertrand Russell joined with the Frankfurt School in their effort at mass social engineering and spilled the beans in his 1951 book, The Impact of Science on Society. He wrote: ‘Physiology and psychology afford fields for scientific technique which still await development.' The importance of mass psychology ‘has been enormously increased by the growth of modern methods of propaganda. Of these the most influential is what is called ‘education. The social psychologists of the future will have a number of classes of school children on whom they will try different methods of producing an unshakable conviction that snow is black. Various results will soon be arrived at. First, that the influence of home is obstructive. Second, that not much can be done unless indoctrination begins before the age of ten. Third, that verses set to music and repeatedly intoned are very effective. Fourth, that the opinion that snow is white must be held to show a morbid taste for eccentricity. But I anticipate. It is for future scientists to make these maxims precise and discover exactly how much it costs per head to make children believe that snow is black, and how much less it would cost to make them believe it is dark gray . When the technique has been perfected, every government that has been in charge of education for a generation will be able to control its subjects securely without the need of armies or policemen.”
Writing in 1992 in Fidelio Magazine, [The Frankfurt School and Political Correctness] Michael Minnicino observed how the heirs of Marcuse and Adorno now completely dominate the universities, ‘teaching their own students to replace reason with ‘Politically Correct’ ritual exercises. There are very few theoretical books on arts, letters, or language published today in the United States or Europe which do not openly acknowledge their debt to the Frankfurt School. The witchhunt on today’s campuses is merely the implementation of Marcuse’s concept of ‘repressive toleration’-‘tolerance for movements from the left, but intolerance for movements from the right’-enforced by the students of the Frankfurt School’.
Drugs
Dr. Timothy Leary gave us another glimpse into the mind of the Frankfurt School in his account of the work of the Harvard University Psychedelic Drug Project, ‘Flashback.' He quoted a conversation that he had with Aldous Huxley: “These brain drugs, mass produced in the laboratories, will bring about vast changes in society. This will happen with or without you or me. All we can do is spread the word. The obstacle to this evolution, Timothy, is the Bible’. Leary then went on: “We had run up against the Judeo-Christian commitment to one God, one religion, one reality, that has cursed Europe for centuries and America since our founding days. Drugs that open the mind to multiple realities inevitably lead to a polytheistic view of the universe. We sensed that the time for a new humanist religion based on intelligence, good-natured pluralism and scientific paganism had arrived.”
One of the directors of the Authoritarian Personality project, R. Nevitt Sanford, played a pivotal role in the usage of psychedelic drugs. In 1965, he wrote in a book issued by the publishing arm of the UK’s Tavistock Institute:‘The nation, seems to be fascinated by our 40,000 or so drug addicts who are seen as alarmingly wayward people who must be curbed at all costs by expensive police activity. Only an uneasy Puritanism could support the practice of focusing on the drug addicts (rather than our 5 million alcoholics) and treating them as a police problem instead of a medical one, while suppressing harmless drugs such as marijuana and peyote along with the dangerous ones.” The leading propagandists of today’s drug lobby base their argument for legalization on the same scientific quackery spelled out all those years ago by Dr. Sanford.
Such propagandists include the multi-billionaire atheist George Soros who chose, as one of his first domestic programs, to fund efforts to challenge the efficacy of America’s $37-billion-a-year war on drugs. The Soros-backed Lindesmith Center serves as a leading voice for Americans who want to decriminalize drug use. ‘Soros is the ‘Daddy Warbucks of drug legalization,’ claimed Joseph Califano Jr. of Columbia University’s National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse’ (The Nation, Sep 2, 1999).
Music, Television and Popular Culture
Adorno was to become head of a ‘music studies’ unit, where in his Theory of Modern Music he promoted the prospect of unleashing atonal and other popular music as a weapon to destroy society, degenerate forms of music to promote mental illness. He said the US could be brought to its knees by the use of radio and television to promote a culture of pessimism and despair - by the late 1930s he (together with Horkheimer) had migrated to Hollywood. The expansion of violent video-games also well supported the School’s aims.
Sex
In his book The Closing of the American Mind, Alan Bloom observed how Marcuse appealed to university students in the sixties with a combination of Marx and Freud. In Eros and Civilization and One Dimensional Man Marcuse promised that the overcoming of capitalism and its false consciousness will result in a society where the greatest satisfactions are sexual. Rock music touches the same chord in the young. Free sexual expression, anarchism, mining of the irrational unconscious and giving it free rein are what they have in common.'
The Media
The modern media - not least Arthur ‘Punch’ Sulzberger Jnr., who took charge of the New York Times in 1992 - drew greatly on the Frankfurt School’s study The Authoritarian Personality. (New York: Harper, 1950). In his book Arrogance, (Warner Books, 1993) former CBS News reporter Bernard Goldberg noted of Sulzberger that he ‘still believes in all those old sixties notions about ‘liberation’ and ‘changing the world man’ . . . In fact, the Punch years have been a steady march down PC Boulevard, with a newsroom fiercely dedicated to every brand of diversity except the intellectual kind.'
In 1953 the Institute moved back to the University of Frankfurt. Adorno died in 1955 and Horkheimer in 1973. The Institute of Social Research continued, but what was known as the Frankfurt School did not. The ‘cultural Marxism’ that has since taken hold of our schools and universities - that ‘political correctness’, which has been destroying our family bonds, our religious tradition and our entire culture -sprang from the Frankfurt School.
It was these intellectual Marxists who, later, during the anti-Vietnam demonstrations, coined the phrase, ‘make love, not war’; it was these intellectuals who promoted the dialectic of ‘negative’ criticism; it was these theoreticians who dreamed of a utopia where their rules governed. It was their concept that led to the current fad for the rewriting of history, and to the vogue for ‘deconstruction’. Their mantras: ‘sexual differences are a contract; if it feels good, do it; do your own thing.'
In an address at the US Naval Academy in August 1999, Dr Gerald L. Atkinson, CDR USN (Ret), gave a background briefing on the Frankfurt School, reminding his audience that it was the ‘foot soldiers’ of the Frankfurt School who introduced the ‘sensitivity training’ techniques used in public schools over the past 30 years (and now employed by the US military to educate the troops about ‘sexual harassment’). During ‘sensitivity’ training teachers were told not to teach but to ‘facilitate.’ Classrooms became centres of self-examination where children talked about their own subjective feelings. This technique was designed to convince children they were the sole authority in their own lives.
Atkinson continued: ‘The Authoritarian personality,’ studied by the Frankfurt School in the 1940s and 1950s in America, prepared the way for the subsequent warfare against the masculine gender promoted by Herbert Marcuse and his band of social revolutionaries under the guise of ‘women’s liberation’ and the New Left movement in the 1960s. The evidence that psychological techniques for changing personality is intended to mean emasculation of the American male is provided by Abraham Maslow, founder of Third Force Humanist Psychology and a promoter of the psychotherapeutic classroom, who wrote that, ‘... the next step in personal evolution is a transcendence of both masculinity and femininity to general humanness.’
On April 17th, 1962, Maslow gave a lecture to a group of nuns at Sacred Heart, a Catholic women’s college in Massachusetts. He noted in a diary entry how the talk had been very ‘successful,’ but he found that very fact troubling. ‘They shouldn’t applaud me,’ he wrote, ‘they should attack. If they were fully aware of what I was doing, they would [attack]’ (Journals, p. 157).
The Network
In her booklet Sex & Social Engineering (Family Education Trust 1994) Valerie Riches observed how in the late 1960s and early 1970s, there were intensive parliamentary campaigns taking place emanating from a number of organisations in the field of birth control (i.e., contraception, abortion, sterilisation). ‘From an analysis of their annual reports, it became apparent that a comparatively small number of people were involved to a surprising degree in an array of pressure groups. This network was not only linked by personnel, but by funds, ideology and sometimes addresses: it was also backed by vested interests and supported by grants in some cases by government departments. At the heart of the network was the Family Planning Association (FPA) with its own collection of offshoots. What we unearthed was a power structure with enormous influence.
‘Deeper investigation revealed that the network, in fact extended further afield, into eugenics, population control, birth control, sexual and family law reforms, sex and health education. Its tentacles reached out to publishing houses, medical, educational and research establishments, women’s organisations and marriage guidance—anywhere where influence could be exerted. It appeared to have great influence over the media, and over permanent officials in relevant government departments, out of all proportion to the numbers involved.
‘During our investigations, a speaker at a Sex Education Symposium in Liverpool outlined tactics of sex education saying: ‘if we do not get into sex education, children will simply follow the mores of their parents’. The fact that sex education was to be the vehicle for peddlers of secular humanism soon became apparent.
‘However, at that time the power of the network and the full implications of its activities were not fully understood. It was thought that the situation was confined to Britain. The international implications had not been grasped.
‘Soon after, a little book was published with the intriguing title The Men Behind Hitler—A German Warning to the World. Its thesis was that the eugenics movement, which had gained popularity early in the twentieth century, had gone underground following the holocaust in Nazi Germany, but was still active and functioning through organizations promoting abortion, euthanasia, sterilization, mental health, etc. The author urged the reader to look at his home country and neighbouring countries, for he would surely find that members and committees of these organizations would cross-check to a remarkable extent.
‘Other books and papers from independent sources later confirmed this situation. . . . A remarkable book was also published in America which documented the activities of the Sex Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS). It was entitled The SIECUS Circle A Humanist Revolution. SIECUS was set up in 1964 and lost no time in engaging in a programme of social engineering by means of sex education in the schools. Its first executive director was Mary Calderone, who was also closely linked to Planned Parenthood, the American equivalent of the British FPA. According to The SIECUS Circle, Calderone supported sentiments and theories put forward by Rudolph Dreikus, a humanist, such as:
· merging or reversing the sexes or sex roles; · liberating children from their families; · abolishing the family as we know it’
In their book Mind Siege, (Thomas Nelson, 2000) Tim LaHaye and David A. Noebel confirmed Riches’s findings of an international network. ‘The leading authorities of Secular Humanism may be pictured as the starting lineup of a baseball team: pitching is John Dewey; catching is Isaac Asimov; first base is Paul Kurtz; second base is Corliss Lamont; third base is Bertrand Russell; shortstop is Julian Huxley; left fielder is Richard Dawkins; center fielder is Margaret Sanger; right fielder is Carl Rogers; manager is ‘Christianity is for losers’ Ted Turner; designated hitter is Mary Calderone; utility players include the hundreds listed in the back of Humanist Manifesto I and II, including Eugenia C. Scott, Alfred Kinsey, Abraham Maslow, Erich Fromm, Rollo May, and Betty Friedan.
‘In the grandstands sit the sponsoring or sustaining organizations, such as the . . . the Frankfurt School; the left wing of the Democratic Party; the Democratic Socialists of America; Harvard University; Yale University; University of Minnesota; University of California (Berkeley); and two thousand other colleges and universities.’
A practical example of how the tidal wave of Maslow-think is engulfing English schools was revealed in an article in the British Nat assoc. of Catholic Families’ (NACF) Catholic Family newspaper (August 2000), where James Caffrey warned about the Citizenship (PSHE) programme which was shortly to be drafted into the National Curriculum. ‘We need to look carefully at the vocabulary used in this new subject’, he wrote, ‘and, more importantly, discover the philosophical basis on which it is founded. The clues to this can be found in the word ‘choice’ which occurs frequently in the Citizenship documentation and the great emphasis placed on pupils’ discussing and ‘clarifying’ their own views, values and choices about any given issue. This is nothing other than the concept known as ‘Values Clarification’ - a concept anathema to Catholicism, or indeed, to Judaism and Islam.
‘This concept was pioneered in California in the 1960’s by psychologists William Coulson, Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow. It was based on ‘humanistic’ psychology, in which patients were regarded as the sole judge of their actions and moral behaviour. Having pioneered the technique of Values Clarification the psychologists introduced it into schools and other institutions such as convents and seminaries - with disastrous results. Convents emptied, religious lost their vocations and there was wholesale loss of belief in God. Why? Because Catholic institutions are founded on absolute beliefs in, for example, the Creed and the Ten Commandments. Values Clarification supposes a moral relativism in which there is no absolute right or wrong and no dependence on God.
‘This same system is to be introduced to the vulnerable minds of infants, juniors and adolescents in the years 2000+. The underlying philosophy of Values Clarification holds that for teachers to promote virtues such as honesty, justice or chastity constitutes indoctrination of children and ‘violates’ their moral freedom. It is urged that children should be free to choose their own values; the teacher must merely ‘facilitate’ and must avoid all moralising or criticising. As a barrister commented recently on worrying trends in Australian education, ‘The core theme of values clarification is that there are no right or wrong values. Values education does not seek to identify and transmit ‘right’ values, teaching of the Church, especially the papal encyclical Evangelium Vitae. ‘In the absence of clear moral guidance, children naturally make choices based on feelings. Powerful peer pressure, freed from the values which stem from a divine source, ensure that ‘shared values’ sink to the lowest common denominator. References to environmental sustainability lead to a mindset where anti-life arguments for population control are present ed as being both responsible and desirable. Similarly, ‘informed choices’ about health and lifestyles are euphemisms for attitudes antithetical to Christian views on motherhood, fatherhood, the sacrament of marriage and family life. Values Clarification is covert and dangerous. It underpins the entire rationale of Citizenship (PSHE) and is to be introduced by statute into the UK soon. It will give young people secular values and imbue them with the attitude that they alone hold ultimate authority and judgement about their lives. No Catholic school can include this new subject as formulated in the Curriculum 2000 document within its current curriculum provision. Dr. William Coulson recognised the psychological damage Rogers’ technique inflicted on youngsters and rejected it, devoting his life to exposing its dangers.
Should those in authority in Catholic education not do likewise, as ‘Citizenship’ makes its deadly approach’? If we allow their subversion of values and interests to continue, we will, in future generations, lose all that our ancestors suffered and died for. We are forewarned, says Atkinson. A reading of history (it is all in mainstream historical accounts) tells us that we are about to lose the most precious thing we have—our individual freedoms.
‘What we are at present experiencing,' writes Philip Trower in a letter to the author, ‘is a blend of two schools of thought; the Frankfurt School and the liberal tradition going back to the 18th century Enlightenment. The Frankfurt School has of course its remote origins in the 18th century Enlightenment. But like Lenin’s Marxism it is a breakaway movement. The immediate aims of both classical liberalism and the Frankfurt School have been in the main the same (vide your eleven points above) but the final end is different. For liberals they lead to ‘improving’ and ‘perfecting’ western culture, for the Frankfurt School they bring about its destruction.
‘Unlike hard-line Marxists, the Frankfurt School do not make any plans for the future. (But) the Frankfurt School seems to be more far-sighted that our classical liberals and secularists. At least they see the moral deviations they promote will in the end make social life impossible or intolerable. But this leaves a big question mark over what a future conducted by them would be like.'
Meanwhile, the Quiet Revolution rolls forward.

Event Introduction

The start of spring is traditionally marked by a day of peace and rejoicing, featuring beautiful displays of flowers in celebration of Lathander, God of Spring and The Morninglord. Unfortunately for the town of Triboar on the Sword Coast, their celebrations are interrupted by the arrival of a githyanki raiding party...
Greengrass runs from Wednesday April 1st, 2020, at Noon PST, thru Monday April 13th, 2020, at Noon PST.

Bio: Born into the royal family of Celene, he assumed the simple name of Melf eschewing a life of comfort as a noble to study the arcane arts and train as a swordsman. He delved in the dungeons of Castle Greyhawk, the Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth and many other harrowing places honing his skills, knowledge and amassing powerful magic items. Melf sees himself as a weapon of weal hurtling toward the heart of the darkest evils in the realm. He is opinionated and has a touch of conceit that he is blissfully ignorant of possessing.

Base Attack Speed: 5 seconds
Basic Attack: Zagyg’s Needle - Melf leaps out and attacks the nearest enemy with his magic spear. If Melf has any Minute Meteors active, he fires one at a random enemy as well.
Ultimate: Melf's Minute Meteors — Melf summons six Minute Meteors that float around him. They are fired when he attacks normally and deal BUD-based damage to all enemies in a small area.

Interesting Abilities

Melf's Adaptive Support Spell: Melf creates a new spell to assist the formation. He customizes it based on the Champions in the formation and where Melf is placed within it. It increases the damage of Champions adjacent to Melf by 100% and that value is augmented based on some other parameters, each of which applies multiplicatively.
  • If there is another Elf (aside from Melf) in the formation, increase the effect by 50%
  • Increase the range by 2 if Melf is not in the front-most or rear-most columns in the formation (affects all champions within 3 slots)
  • Increase the effect by 10% for each unique race in the formation
This ability is buffed by upgrades and equipment (buffs apply to the final calculated value, not the individual increases).
Melf's Augmented Support Spell: Melf augments his Adaptive Support Spell for each Champion it affects.
  • Increase the effect by 50% on the non-dominant gender in the formation (applies to non-binary champions all the time)
  • Increase the effect by 50% for each slot away from Melf a Champion is (multiplicatively)
Melf's Speedy Supplement: Melf provides one of the following effects at random. A new effect is chosen at random every 50 areas (though it could pick the same one multiple times in a row).
  • Increase chance to spawn an additional enemy with each wave by 25%
  • Increase enemy spawn speed by 25%
  • Increase chance of double quest drops by 25%
This ability is buffed by equipment; note if the chance of double quest drops gets above 100% it will then always cause double quest drops with a chance to cause triple quest drops, etc. Likewise with spawning additional enemies with each wave.
Melf's Righteous Determination: Melf knows exactly what evil is. Whenever an enemy spawns it has a 50% chance of being deemed "evil" by Melf. Enemies that are deemed evil take 100% more damage from all Ultimate attacks.

Specializations

Bonus Adaption: Increases the effect of Melf's Adaptive Support Spell by 100%
Extra Supplements: Increase the effect of Melf's Speedy Supplement by 100%

Formation & Mission Information

Once you complete the first mission, three Variants and a Free Play show up. There is a new formation that holds 10 Champions. It has an Event-specific format that I've done my best to re-create below.

Bruenor - Shield Master
Minsc - Humanoids Calliope - College of Lore Nayeli - Oath of Devotion
Asharra - Elves & Dwarves Jarlaxle - Leader of Bregan D'aerthe
Celeste - Life Domain
Hitch - Charismatic
This formation is for the first couple of runs where you're just not going to get enough Gold to get everyone on the field, let alone level people up into their power curves. At this point, Jarlaxle is focusing on being your Primary DPS while everyone else is set up to support him.
The following formation is for once you can get Hitch up into his power curve for damage and he starts outpacing Jarlaxle. You'll have to figure this out during your runs by swapping him and Jarlaxle around every now and then and seeing who's doing better in that Primary DPS slot.

Tyril - Moonbeam
Makos - Dark Blessing
Bruenor - Shield Master
Asharra - Humans Calliope - College of Lore Nayeli - Oath of Devotion
Jarlaxle - Leader of Bregan D'aerthe Hitch - Charismatic
Celeste - Life Domain
Minsc - Humanoids
This formation should get you through the Event as a new player.

Initial Mission: The Endless War (Melf)

Cost: 100 Bouquets
Complete: Level 50
Reward: Melf + whatever Lathander's Favor you earned
Info: No restrictions.

Second Mission: Honorable Discharge

Cost: 1,000 Bouquets
Complete: Level 75
Reward: Gold Melf Chest & whatever Lathander's Favor you earned
Info: Each Champion can only be used to complete 50 areas.
Gaar's Notes: Not gonna lie, this could be rough if you don't have much Favor. New players will need to remove all Champions from the formation and rely on Click Damage only through the first 25 levels and then build a formation on 26 to beat this due to lack of swappable Champions. Make sure it shows as Easy before starting. Even then, maybe wait until The Problem Solvers shows as Easy as well before starting this one.

Third Mission: The Problem Solvers

Cost: 2,500 Bouquets
Complete: Level 125
Reward: Gold Melf Chest & whatever Lathander's Favor you earned
Info: Only Champions with an INT score of 13 or higher can be used.
Gaar's Notes: Well, this is basically your introduction to Strahd as a Patron, only in an Event. Here's a list of viable Champs with those that can be used with a Feat in ():
  • Slot 1: Sisaspia, K'thriss, & Turiel
  • Slot 2: Regis & (Celeste)
  • Slot 3: Artemis
  • Slot 4: Jarlaxle, Paultin, & Stoki
  • Slot 5: Dhadius, Xander, & Qillek
  • Slot 6: Asharra, Krond, & Shandie
  • Slot 7: Jim, Catti-Brie, & Farideh
  • Slot 8: Delina, Vlahnya, Hitch, & (Nrakk)
  • Slot 9: Makos, Morgaen, Birdsong, & (Drizzt)
  • Slot 10: Tyril & (Rosie)
  • Slot 11: Strix, Dragonbait, & Avren
  • Slot 12: Melf, (Zorbu), & (Nerys)
If you don't have a viable formation after this restriction, stock up on Favor before attempting. Get it to Easy, or even better, get Wheat From the Chaff to show as Easy before starting.
As a brand new player who may only have Core Champs and Melf, you may end up at a point where your Champs just aren't doing damage. At that point, try leveling up your Click Damage. Normally I don't recommend this, but I beat it that way on my gearless account with Core/Melf in the formation. So keep it open as an option.

Fourth Mission: Wheat From the Chaff

Cost: 5,000 Bouquets
Complete: Level 175
Reward: Gold Melf Chest & whatever Lathander's Favor you earned
Info: Melf starts out in the formation with Melf's Righteous Determination unlocked. Only enemies that Melf deems evil can be damaged. Blockers, bosses, and boss trash mobs are always deemed evil. All non-evil enemies are invulnerable and can not even be attacked.
Gaar's Notes: Oof. Make sure you have a reliable tank for this one because they're going to get some work. Do not attempt this before it shows as Easy if you're new. This is going to be difficult without AoE DPS options. It's also going to take a long time... (pssst...set up your formation, level up your Champs, place familiars to level them up if you can, then go offline...)
If you're brand new and only have Core/Evergreen Champs plus Melf, here's a formation setup that should help get you through the early levels until you can get another tank in front. Basically, you're splitting damage between two Champs to help you die slower. Bruenor has his Overhwelm Feat slotted while Nayeli is in Devotion spec and Calliope is in Lore spec to increases survivability. Good luck!
