Sites to Avoid: Definitely DO NOT post these.

Earnsanity — Shady owner, sketchy site. Held giveaway and then refunded the prizes after it was over. History of scamming many others. AVOID AT ALL COSTS UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE SCAMMED.
Paidverts — Shady owner, sketchy site. Keeps doing debt swaps (cash to BAP). Do not post.
Neobux — It isn’t really a scam, but they operate as a pyramid scheme. There’s money to be made online, but it’s definitely not there.
MarketGlory — It does pay out, but the pay is absolutely ridiculous. The only way to make a decent amount of money is to have a lot of referrals, and referral whoring on this subreddit WILL result in a permanent ban.
MindSumo — Not actually a /beermoney site. It’s only spam in this sub.
G2A — Scam/sells stolen keys.
Robinhood — This is spammed on our sub constantly.
Quickthoughts — Many reports of people being banned when trying to withdraw as of 10/2018. Do your due diligence before possibly wasting your time on this app.
Sites with $100+ minimum — These sites usually offer higher than normal payments for simple tasks, with a high minimum to cash out. They are always scams.
Generic news sites that pay you ridiculous amounts to read an article (two euros??) — Common sense should take care of this, but in case it doesn’t, it’s always a scam. The site is usually hosted somewhere in Eastern Europe, and you will never get paid.
Free bitcoin sites/"faucets" (THIS INCLUDES QOINPRO) — This is not referring to those video-viewing/task sites (although they’re still paying fragments of a penny). I’m talking about sites that give you 0.000001BTC to fill a captcha (freebitco.in, dailybitcoins). Admittedly many beermoney sites pay low, but don’t even bother with these.
Also: Bitcoin mining is NO LONGER PROFITABLE. If you're really so keen on getting bitcoins, doing so through an exchange is your best option.
Here are a few more scam sites and sketchy sites.

Welcome to part 2 of the FAQ.

This section covers common terms (listed at the bottom) and which sites to use. This includes questions about which sites are available, how to make money quickly, the "best" sites, work under age 18, information about Engageme.tv, and other related questions.

Part one covers questions about beermoney in general. This includes questions about exchanging gift cards, what equipment to use, issues with a site not working or offers not crediting, info on posting a giveaway or tasks, taxes, using VPN/VPS/emulators/etc, and other general questions.

HOW CAN I MAKE A FEW CENTS/A DOLLAR QUICKLY?

  • /signupsforpay — Users pay for people to sign up on a website, usually under a referral link.
  • /slavelabour — Users pay for various tasks to be completed.
  • Qmee — [Click on ads while searching & Surveys]  No minimum amount for PayPal. /qmee
  • GAIN.GG — [GPT]  No minimum amount for PayPal.
  • Quickrewards —[GPT]  No minimum amount for PayPal.
  • Perk — [Videos & GPT]  $1 Amazon and many other gift cards for $5. Instant PayPal starts at $0.50.
  • Earnably — [GPT]  $1 minimum for PayPal and Amazon.
  • InstaGC — [GPT]  $1 for Amazon. Must redeem $50 in other rewards before unlocking PayPal.

HOW CAN I MAKE $$$ IN A FEW HOURS / DAYS?

Chances are, if you're asking that question - it's already too late. Unfortunately, a lot of these sites take a while to credit and pay out, so trying to make a lot of money in a short time frame just doesn't work well. Beermoney is really best for low amounts over a long term. That's not to say there isn't people who earn a lot or in a short time, but most don't - especially beginners.

Some alternatives:

  • Donating blood/plasma.
  • Check craigslist for gigs or jobs. Sometimes you can find simple stuff.
  • Ask around if anyone needs some help — Babysit, clean the house, clean out garages/attics, decorate the house (or remove decorations), do yard work, mow laws or weed wack, weed gardens, clean up leaves, spread mulch, paint sheds/walls/furniture/etc, walk dogs, give pets baths or otherwise take care of them, or anything else someone might need you to do.
  • Mow grass or shovel snow.
  • UberEats — Get paid to deliver food. It may take a couple days to get verified.
  • Check out a local temp agency, construction sites, painting firms, or day labor places - sometimes they need extra hands right away.
  • /borrow
  • Get a new credit card. Some companies give you a card in a couple days, but you may be able to call and ask for the number. /Flipping
  • /assistance   /Random_Acts_Of_Pizza   /randomactsofamazon

HOW CAN I MAKE ENOUGH MONEY TO QUIT MY JOB?

Most people won't make enough money for that here. /beermoney is mostly just to make extra cash on the side for your habits/needs. It is possible, but you would be better off looking over at /WorkOnline

WHAT'S THE BEST WEBSITE/APP/ETC?

There simply is no "best" because of two reasons:
  1. Your Individual Preferences — There are tons of types of sites. Are you looking for a GPT site? Surveys? Videos? Games? Cash back? Receipt scanning? Are you looking to cash out to PayPal? Amazon? Cryptocurrency? Are you looking for $0.01 minimum cash out even if it has lower earning rates, or do you want the highest rates even if you have to earn $25 before cashing out? Do you want a daily bonus or higher regular earnings? Ongoing or one-time referral bonuses? There are tons of variables.
  2. Your Demographics — Your available offers/tasks/jobs/etc will always be limited by your demographics. Surveys only accept certain demographics. Offer walls only accept certain countries. Video providers limit how many ads go to a certain location.
Instead of asking what's "best", ask yourself: what type of site am I looking for? If you don't know what you're looking for, start off with some of these sites or take a look at the lists below.

Here is a massive list of other subreddits that you may be interested in. These aren't restricted to just money making. They include things such as assistance, freebies, asking professionals, cooking/meals, self improvement, and tons of other useful things.

WHAT SITES/APPS WORK FOR PEOPLE OUTSIDE OF THE USA?

  1. Check out this post.
  2. Search this subreddit for whatever country you're in. Canada, Philippines, India, UK, etc. Also search for global.
  3. Check out /beermoneyglobal and /beermoneyuk. Note: These subreddits don't have as much activity as /beermoney simply because there aren't as many things available outside of the USA. Just ignore the dates of the posts and take a look at what sites are being mentioned.
Didn't find enough results or what you were looking for? Chances are, that's all there is, especially if there is someone asking the same question in the last 6 months. You're not going to get better results by asking again. There are just more sites for people in the USA than other countries.

WHAT SITES WORK FOR PEOPLE UNDER 18?

Your options are very limited under the age of 18. There are a handful of GPT sites that allow minors, but work will still be limited. Skip the surveys, and stick to videos and offer walls. Try checking out /Slavelabour for tasks. Also, check out this post and this post. Don't lie about your age. It will just create problems later.
Your best bet for making money right now is to freelance or to do small tasks offline for locals. Walk some dogs, rake leaves, mow lawns, shovel snow, wash cars, help someone move, babysit, clean houses, etc. There are tons of things around the house that people will pay to have done. If you're having trouble finding stuff, ask your parents. Word of mouth can travel pretty quick.

Right now it's better to focus on learning skills you can use later. A few ideas:
  • Practice typing to increase your typing speed.
  • Start writing and post it online for people to critique.
  • Learn another language. Spanish and French are common, but Chinese could be useful and a lot of people find Russian or German fun.
  • Learn to program. HTML, JavaScript, and PHP are good for Web Dev. Java or C++ is a good start for software dev. There are plenty of free sites to learn programming, just pick one that has you actually code on your own.
  • Learn to use photoshop, GIMP, or any other drawing and photo manipulation software.
  • Learn to use 3D software or animation software.
  • Do arts and crafts and sell them on craigslist or Etsy.
If you're planning to go to college, get a head start on whatever you want to do. Not sure what to do? Pick one from this list and start trying. There's no harm in learning something and later realizing you don't like it. So, just pick one that sounds best or roll a dice, and if you don't like it, try another one.

Thinking about using your parent's name to sign up? DON'T. This is highly illegal, even if they consent to it. At best, you will be banned and have your earnings confiscated. At worst, your parents could be arrested. Just don't do it.

HOW DO I START EARNING PASSIVELY WITH MY COMPUTER OR PHONE? / WHAT PHONE SHOULD I BUY?

Passive apps have been on the decline for a while now. I don't recommend buying new devices unless you have recently tried the apps and determined it was worth it for your situation. For me, a $10 phone would take roughly 3 months to pay off. If you're still interested, here's a beginners guide to get you started.

WHAT ABOUT SITES FOR 4G / LTE DATA?

Any app should work just fine on data. It's an app, they're made for phones, so it should be expected that the phone will travel.

QUESTIONS ABOUT HIDEOUT.TV / ENGAGEME.TV / SMORES.TV

What is it? Hideout.tv (formerly known as Engageme.tv) is a company that pays users to watch videos.
Where to find it? You can visit their website and link your GPT site account, or you can find them on the Adscend Media offer wall on your favorite GPT sites.
How much does it pay? Most sites pay between $0.005 and $0.01 for every 3 videos.
Device Limit You are allowed to use 1 screen per device and up to 3 devices total per household. This 3 device limit applies across Hideout.tv Engageme.tv and Smores.tv. Each device must have an actual person looking at the screen.
Additional Information Here's the list of Do's and Don'ts.

WHAT SITES HAVE _____ GIFT CARD?

Swagbucks and Instagc have the largest variety of rewards. If you don't see what you want there, you'll have a hard time finding it on any other site.
Another option is to redeem for PayPal or Amazon and use that to purchase what you want. Amazon has Playstation, Playstation Plus, Xbox, Xbox live, Battle.net, Nintendo eShop, Google Play, and more.

WHAT DOES ___ MEAN?

Here are a few of the most common terms:
GPT It stands for "Get Paid To". These are sites that pay you to do a variety of short little tasks such as signing up for a site, watching videos, doing surveys, etc. To be a GPT site, the site must offer multiple ways to earn. If it focuses only on surveys or only on watching videos then it's not a GPT site. These sites generally have multiple offer walls for you to choose between. If a site has an offer wall, it's safe to assume that it's a GPT site. Some examples of GPT sites would be Swagbucks, InstaGC, and PrizeRebel.
Offer Wall These are sections that give a user a bunch of various tasks to complete, and they are generally put on multiple sites for users to complete. A few examples: Peanut Labs, OfferToro, Trialpay, Revenue Universe
Micro-task These are similar to GPT sites but the tasks usually require more skill, and they usually are hosted on the site itself. For example, Clickworker or mTurk are micro-task sites.
Mturk "Amazon Mechanical Turk" - This is a micro-task site run by Amazon. They have a large variety of jobs that you can do work on. Check out /mturk if you want more info.
Ref Link "Ref" stands for referral. A referral link will look something like www.somewebsite.com/?ref=39adi3rkla. The referral link is used as an incentive for you to advertise a site and for other people to join. There usually is some sort of reward or perk for sharing or using these links, but there doesn't necessarily need to be something.
Non-Ref Link This is a link to the site or app that doesn't contain the referral portion of the link. For example, if your referral link is www.somewebsite.com/?ref=39adi3rkla then your non-ref link is www.somewebsite.com. The easiest way to get a non-ref link is to go to the home page of the site and use that link. If your post is about an app, you can use a link to app in the app store instead. For example, here is a non-ref link to perk: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.perk.points.aphone
Affiliate Link This is similar to a referral, but with one key difference: these sites pay you a commission every time you get someone to purchase something from their site.
Farm / Phone Farm These are a collection of phones that are used to run apps that pay us to run the apps. These apps typically run videos with ads. Check out this beginners guide if you want more info. A person could also have a farm of computers or a mix of computers and laptops, but more commonly people are referring to phones.
Cap This is the maximum amount of points that is possible to make in a time frame, which is determined by the site or advertiser. For example, if a site has a cap of 20 points per day from videos, you are able to earn a maximum of 20 points per day per videos. If you can earn 20 points per day on average because there simply isn't enough ads, offers, time in the day, etc, that is not a cap. The best way to tell if there is a cap is to watch your earnings. If you earn 20 points steadily, or even in spurts, over 24 hours, you're likely not reaching a cap. If you earn 20 points in 12 hours and then earn 0 points for the next 12 hours, then you likely have reached a hard cap (or you may be soft banned).
Hard Cap This is a limit specified by a site or advertiser, and it does not vary or it varies very little. For example, if you can earn 20 points every day and no more, that is a hard cap.
Soft Cap This is similar to a hard cap, but you are able to still earn points at a much lower rate. For example, if you can earn 20 points in 12 hours, and then 5 points over the next 12 hours, you may have a soft cap at 20 points. It's not a hard cap since you can keep earning, but it's still a cap because after the first 20 points you're being limited. Note: If there are fewer ads simply because of a low inventory of ads, that's not a soft cap. Some sites will have more ads to show at certain times of day. If you can earn 20 points from midnight to noon, then 5 points from noon to midnight on one day, then the next day you earn 5 points from midnight to noon and 20 points from noon to midnight, that's not a soft cap. That is simply low ad inventory. A cap will always artificially limit your potential earnings based on a specific time frame.
Passive These are sites/apps that require absolutely no amount of effort to keep running. The only interaction a user should have to make is the initial setup and possibly selecting rewards. PerkTV is NOT a passive app. Lockscreens are NOT passive apps. If you have to interact with it to be rewarded, it is NOT passive.
Semi-passive These are sites/apps that generally don't require a lot of human effort to run, but they do require some attention. For example, Perk Pop Quiz requires a user to open the app and start running it each time. The phone also will require a user to checkup on it so that the app doesn't stop working. If these apps ran perfectly and never stalled, then they could potentially be considered passive apps. Even if you were to get it to run perfectly, you cannot discard the fact that most users cannot. Lockscreens are not semi-passive.
Lockscreens These apps pay you to unlock your phone. They will provide some sort of ad on your screen and you need to swipe to unlock the phone. These apps are neither passive nor semi-passive. You are actively interacting with the app to be paid.
Soft Ban These are bans that are temporary. They may last a few hours, days, weeks, or even months. Usually they are given out by the advertisers, rather than the earning sites. These types of bans are common in passive earning sites, and they are generally a "you're doing something we don't like" alert. If you are experiencing a soft ban, make sure you are following the rules.
IP Ban This is ban on your IP address. These bans are handed out by companies because someone did something on that IP that a site or advertiser really didn't like. If your IP address recently changed and you can't access the sites or earn points like you normally do, there's a good chance your new IP address was banned by someone else. Generally the advertisers are the ones to give out IP bans, but the sites themselves can do it too. You can try contacting the site to reverse the IP ban, but it's usually easier to just change your IP address again.
Account Ban This is a ban from the earning sites themselves. For example, if Swagbucks bans you and you are no longer able to log into Swagbucks, it's an account ban. When people are referring to just "bans" they usually mean an account ban. Make sure to consider the context it's being used in though.

Open Case Study - Report #1 - Month 10 - shloosh

Hello everybody. I frequent the juststart subreddit for tips and motivation. I don’t often see open case studies here so I thought I’d share my results.

About me

Before I get into this case study, I’ll share a bit about myself. I’m a 20 year old living near Boulder, Colorado.
This is my first affiliate site, but I’ve been interested in affiliate marketing and web businesses since mid 2016.

I worked as a web developer for a small local SAAS business from the end of 2015 to mid-November 2017. I quit because I didn’t see a satisfying long term position for myself at the company. I also wanted to focus on my health and social life.
Right now I live with my parents and have a decent amount saved up from working. I hope to use some of this money to grow my current affiliate site or future sites.

On a more personal note, I have an autoimmune disease that affects the digestive system. The inflammation can lead to depression and can affect my work productivity.
I’m sharing this to potentially provide motivation for anyone else suffering from health conditions that wants to get started. It’s not always easy to keep going with these kinds of businesses, especially with a health condition, but if you stick with it you will eventually see results.

Ok, now onto the case study.

About the site (Months 1-9)

My website is in the tea niche. I chose this niche by writing out a list of my 50 top interests and evaluating each one on its affiliate potential.

I officially registered the domain of my site, tea-culture.net, on April 3rd 2017. There is a website called expired domains that allows you to analyse high quality domains that have recently expired. I chose “tea-culture.net” for its moderately high direct searches and short name. For my next site I want to pick something more brandable and less generic.

The website is running on a DigitalOcean droplet that costs $10/mo. The server is running Debian and I love the freedom I get over something like cPanel. I use Nginx as the web server, Wordpress as a CMS, LetsEncrypt for SSL, and a simple crontab script to backup key files to Google Drive every night.

The domain was sandboxed for about 6 months, partially due to low content output. I was hoping that buying an expired domain with related content would shorten the sandbox, but I left the site empty for too long and the content may have been too different.
One of the first things I did after I bought the domain was to get a logo designed. I used 19 dollar logos for this and am satisfied with what I got for the money.

In the first 9 months, I published 7 articles totalling 12,187 words:
Publish Date Article Name Word Count
July 1st Tea vs. Coffee: Which is Better for Your Health? 2,360
July 6th Best Teas to Cure Your Cold or Flu 1,039
Sept. 19th Best Teas for Anxiety and Stress Relief: Herbal Teas Backed by Science 2,546
Sept. 24th Gyokuro: Shade-Grown Japanese Green Tea 2,092
Oct. 12th How to Brew Tea in 5 Easy Steps 2,002
Oct. 22nd Zavarka Brewing: How to Make Tea Russian Style 776
Oct. 28th Butter Tea: The National Drink of Tibet 1,372
Total 12,187

I wrote each article except Best Teas to Cure Your Cold or Flu, which I paid someone on UpWork $40 to write. I also paid a different writer on UpWork $40 to write an unrelated article, but I was unsatisfied with the quality and decided not to publish the article.
Most of the articles I wrote in the first 9 months were an attempt to draw in traffic with evergreen content. In retrospect, it would have been better to start straight off with a mix of evergreen and affiliate content.
The Zavarka Brewing article is actually my highest ranking article in Organic Search. Ironically I spent the least amount of time writing this article and it has the lowest word count. It makes me wonder if I just got lucky with a low competition keyword or if I need to rethink my content strategy.
Regardless, I have become much more knowledgeable in my niche and have made improvements in my writing.

As far as social media goes, I reserved all important social media handles in late September. Every time I publish an article I post to Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and occasionally Instagram. I haven’t seen much results with this yet but I haven’t been very active on any of those platforms.
I did a bit of social media outreach in October. The “How to Brew Tea in 5 Easy Steps” article was an attempt at using an infographic to gain some traction on social media. It took me a few days to make the infographic in Gimp and several days to write the article.
I published the infographic to /tea and several other tea related forums, as well as Pinterest & Instagram. It was moderately successful and got 350 upvotes in the /tea subreddit and was responsible for the bump in traffic in October.

I also tried to get other sites that had backlinks to similar articles to link to that article. I followed the Guestographic technique outlined by Brian Dean of Backlinko. I found 10 sites that made good candidates and reached out to them but received no replies. This whole process was time consuming and made me realize what a pain in the ass white-hat link building is.

After some time off after quitting my job, I decided to get serious with this affiliate site and got back to work in early January.

I’m posting this as an open case study because I’m not afraid of competition. Plus, if you are thinking of going into this niche, I would recommend against it. There are better niches to get into. I’m only continuing with the site now because I’m sick of giving up on things too early and am staying in until I start seeing some money ($100-500/mo).

What I did in January

When I got back to the site with fresh eyes I realized how ugly it was. I was using a free theme similar to Genesis themes called GeneratePress. I had added a couple custom colors but that only made it uglier.
After some research I settled on the Let's Blog theme on Themeforest for $51 after tax. I’m happy with the theme and have seen a bump in user retention.

After reading the first month of bprs07’s case study, I was convinced to purchase the Amazon Affilate for Wordpress Plugin (AAWP) for $42 after tax. This plugin handles link localization and provides a number of beautiful looking templates.

With my site looking much better, I moved on to creating content. I’ve pivoted from 100% evergreen to a split of roughly ⅔ evergreen and ⅓ affiliate. In January, I published 4 articles spanning 15,867 words.

Publish Date Article Name Word Count
Jan 8th The Best Portable Tea Infuser Bottles of 2018 6,404
Jan 16th Alishan Tea: Grown High in the Mountains of Taiwan 1,658
Jan 24th Star Anise Tea – Benefits and How to Prepare 1,260
Jan 29th Best Tea Infuser Mug of 2018 6,545
Total 15,867
Total Published Words 28,054

I also did some keyword research in between articles. I use the Keywords Everywhere plugin frequently and highly recommend it.
All of my keywords are currently in a Google Doc under a number of different categories: best tea for X, teas around the world, tea accessories (best tea x, tea x reviews), getting started. When I get time I want to move this to a spreadsheet.
I tend to be indecisive and it was taking me much too long (1-2 hrs) between each article to decide what to write next. To overcome this, I spent a few hours prioritizing all of my keywords based on search volume and competition. Now I have a list of the next 15 article keywords lined up and simply pick the next one on the list when I finish an article.

Another note on keyword research: Google has two filters called allintitle and allinurl that help you check competition for a keyword. You can search “allintitle:your keyword” without the quotes and Google will return a list of results. Below your search there will be text that tells you how many results were returned. This number can give you an idea of the number of articles that exist for a keyword and thus the total competition for that keyword.
If I had known about these filters at the time of prioritization I would have factored that in. I may go back at some point and revise my list.

Workflow & Writing Process

Take heed to copy my writing process because I’m not getting the best results. However, my writing speed and quality has improved since I started the site so you may be able to learn something.
I tend to be a perfectionist and procrastinator. This is a deadly combo. I want to know everything about a subject before I start writing. I have learned a couple things to help ease the writing process.

First, I write every Monday-Saturday from 10 AM to 2 PM. This gives me 24 hours a week of solid focus and output on a cognitively demanding task. If you don’t have 4 hours, try allocating 2 hours when you are most focused. This could be before work in the morning if you are a morning person, or 2 hours before bed if you are a night owl.
Most of my editing and SEO, as well as image creating and anything else that requires less cognitive load gets done outside of my 4 hour schedule whenever I have free time.

Second, I try to impose time constraints as frequently as possible. If I’m working on a given task like creating an outline, I’ll start a 30 minute timer in which to finish that task.
If the task is larger, such as writing the summary of 15 products in a best x article, I’ll calculate roughly how long I want the task to take and divide that by the number of sub-tasks. In this case I might set aside 5 hours for the task of writing product summaries, so I’ll start a 20 minute timer for each product summary.

Another thing that has helped me is taking extensive notes about every aspect of the business. I have a Google Docs folder with a number of different docs and spreadsheets to organize my thinking.
I’ve also experimented with taking notes for article research by hand. While it does help with information retention, it is time consuming and I wouldn’t recommend it.

Finally, anything you want to improve on you should be reading about. If you can’t make reading a priority your progress will be significantly stinted.
Right now I’m reading a book called Everybody Writes. I saw this recommended in Month 2 of bprs07’s case study and on a number of copywriting websites. I would recommend it if you are new to writing.
When I read I take notes by hand to help with retention. My note taking process involves summarizing the key points of a chapter after I finish reading it.

This is only a snapshot of my writing process and organization strategy, so let me know if you have any specific questions.

Goals for February

Conclusion

This was longer than I expected. Future case studies will be shorter because I will have less to cover. I hope you found something of value reading this. I had fun writing it and it helped me put my efforts over the last 10 months into better perspective.

Let me know if you have tips or suggestions for my site or workflow.

Here's how I just landed a $5,000 project through UpWork.

Hi all,
Lots of back and forth on here about UpWork and similar sites. People complain that it's bad for business -- that companies are just on UpWork to pay bottom dollar and instigate a bidding war.
I'm not a heavy user of UpWork. Most of my clients come through referral. But I do use it from time to time to pick up new projects and it was extremely helpful in getting me off the ground.
Anyway - I just want to share my most recent experience with UpWork, in which I was I was hired by a client to do a $5,000, two-month project. I'm hoping that sharing my process will help others understand how to use the platform more effectively and get the most value from it.
My profile
I'm a copywriter with experience leading content marketing. I have nearly 10 years of experience. So, I charge a premium rate. My profile shows a stated rate of $100/hour. Although I don't always charge this rate, I try to protect it as much possible.
Generally, I prefer to quote a fixed price for project work, which will be quoted based on my estimate of time and a rate of $100.
I don't think there is anything particularly cool or different about my profile. Here's the link: https://www.upwork.com/freelancers/~018b6a1fdd3ca01ccc
It's pretty straightforward and touts my experience. But, again, nothing here that can't be replicated. The key is that I have a focused skill set and I make it pretty easy for clients to decide right away if I am good at what they want me to do.
You can see that my UpWork stats aren't even that great. I have only done a few projects from UpWork in ~1 year of being on the site, so my feedback is limited. But, I don't really worry about it.
Finding work
Okay, so let's just clear this part up right away: Yes, there are a lot of shitty jobs on UpWork. As a writer, I know first hand. Content mills, agencies, and affiliate marketers are rampant--demanding "excellent quality" writing for $10 per 1,000 words. It's all over.
But that doesn't mean there isn't room for good work in there, too.
The first, and most important, thing to know about UpWork is that you should not waste any time with these shitty jobs. Don't even look at them. Don't think you can haggle on price. Don't think you can make a quick buck while you wait to find other work. It's a complete waste and the time you spend reading these ads and responding to them could be used finding real, paying clients.
Secondly: Set up your job feed with aggressive filtering. My job feed only shows me jobs within a few relevant writing categories and ONLY "Expert" level work. Take the time to set this up and then use it instead of the main search feature. This will save you time of getting sucked into the vortex of work that's on the site. Focus on the best jobs only.
For this particular job, I scrolled through probably 20-30 listings. I clicked on maybe 4 or 5?
You can tell pretty quickly from the synopsis of the project if it's a good, paying gig. (e.g. They don't have a budget of $10 listed, the description doesn't say they need to hire something crazy like 50 writers, etc.)
Once I see one that looks promising, I click on it. First thing to look for: Client history. Look for clients that have hired people in the past and paid them good wages.
See this screenshot marked up from my actual job that I recently won: http://imgur.com/a/NM8qC
A few things jump out at me right away:
Contacting the client
Don't overthink your message to the client. Your goal should be to get them into a conversation, not sign the deal right away.
I would advise against long messages with extremely detailed work histories. Keep it short and punchy. Hit on your strengths, give them a VERY EASY way to see your work. Then ask them to contact you to discuss it.
Again, you want to make the barrier to entry low here. Don't say "Please hire me". Say, "Let's discuss to see if there's a good fit". Getting to the interview stage is like 90% of the battle in my experience.
Here's the message I sent to this client:
Hey there,
I would love to set up a time to discuss your project in more detail.
I'm an award-winning copywriter with nearly 10 years of experience working with startups, agencies, and corporate clients of all types. My work has generated millions of page views, been shared by tens of thousands of people on social media, and earned coverage in major media like Time, Bloomberg, Business.com, Huffington Post, and more.
Please see work samples here: http://writing.tylerhakes.com.
My background includes plenty of experience parsing out technical topics and communicating it to a variety of audiences. I've worked closely with developers and even speak a little PHP, JavaScript, and Python myself. So, I'm certainly not afraid to take on your project.
If my stated hourly rate seems higher than you expect, just know that I am willing to work out fixed pricing or a retainer model for ongoing work.
Let's set up a time to discuss your goals and see how I can help.
Cheers,
Tyler
Note that I set expectations on the price. I didn't say I was flexible on the rate, just that we could set a fixed price. What I have found is that clients often have no idea how much time things will take, so when they are staring at a $100/hour rate, they immediately start to think that it will cost them millions (another reason I prefer fixed-price billing versus hourly work).
In this case, I was exactly right. The client had estimated it would take a full 40 hours per week for 2 months to complete this project--something like 300 hours total. So, at $100/hour, that's $30,000. I would have been way outside of his budget. After scoping the project, I estimated the work to be closer to 40-50 hours of work. I quoted him a fixed price estimate based on that at my normal rate of $100/hour and he accepted.
(If you're curious, my quote was presented as a fixed price. I didn't bother with the hourly rate--it seems to make conversations more difficult.)
And, there you have it. Within 1 day, I landed a $5,000 project. Went from UpWork to Skype call to quote. And he just signed off on it and also shared with me that he will have ongoing work for me after the completion of this initial project.
I'm happy to answer any questions or provide as much advice as I can.
Cheers!
Tyler

Mautic - Free Open Source Marketing Automation

Mautic - Free Open Source Marketing Automation Mautic is a free, open-source marketing automation software system. It can be setup through the Mautic cloud or installed directly on your server (preferred).
Mautic has already saved me hundreds of dollars. In the long run it will surely save me tens of thousands. The simple fact of the matter is that most commercial solutions are very overpriced. Whether you are using an exclusive email client (Mailchimp, AWeber, Constant Contact, etc.) or something more comprehensive (HubSpot, Infusionsoft, etc.), you can easily pay into the hundreds of dollars per month.
Mautic is still early in its development, but do not be fooled: the platform is already very robust. The developers have done a great job releasing timely updates and bug fixes. Furthermore, they are responsive on the Mautic support forum. Community members frequently chime in with answers to common questions, too. Overall it's a friendly and helpful place to be.
Seven Reasons to Use Mautic for Marketing Automation Let's now review seven specific reasons to use Mautic for your company's marketing automation needs:
1. Mautic is Free (not "freemium" - actually 100% free) Because Mautic is free, the sole motivation for its development is functionality. There are no financial interests, corporate interests, or outside motives playing into its evolution. Furthermore, there are no referral or affiliate fees to be made for supporting its use.
2. All Resources Are Aimed at Development of the Mautic System The developers and the community behind Mautic all have a common goal to develop a powerful marketing automation system that frees them of the corporate bloat of commercial solutions. Virtually no time or money needs to be spent marketing and selling their software, because that is not the purpose. All resources are aimed at developing a functional end product.
3. Mautic Works Reliably and Effectively The real reason I support Mautic is because it works. And as time goes on, its functionality will only continue to improve. It already has a number of options for creating forms, scoring leads, developing autosponders, and creating if-then hierarchies for marketing automation. There are already many integrations in place for existing mail systems and CRMs, too. It's handling my leads properly and the configuration is solid within my VPS server. It does take a little technical know-how to setup CRON jobs, but other than that it's pretty much plug and play. It also tracks IPs and uses a tracking pixel to determine pages visited, links clicked in emails, etc.
4. Mautic is Not Limited Like Many Other Marketing Automation Systems Mautic gives you full control over your handling of leads. Something very frustrating about Mailchimp was needing to group contacts within a single "master list" to keep costs down and prevent duplication of campaign efforts. Within Mautic, though, you can simply assign a lead to any number of lists when they submit a form or perform other actions, such as within an automated Campaign. You won't need to spend hours reading Mailchimp's support documents and re-configuring your lists with them to achieve simple segmentation goals. The process in Mautic is easy and intuitive.
5. Mautic May Improve Your Email Inbox Delivery Rate In Mautic, you can configure your email sending settings however you'd like. Whether you tie into a scalable solution like Amazon SES (I'm working on this right now) or host from your own server, you get to choose where your email comes from and goes to. And at least in my case this has improved my inbox delivery rate. Emails coming from the dedicated IP on my VPS server are arriving in people's inbox, whereas the mail I had previously sent from Mailchimp often would land in the gmail "promotions" tab. Mautic's email builder is nice, too, including merge tag functionality so you can craft personalized messages.
6. Mautic's Campaign Builder is Easy to Use Whether you're building a basic autosponder or a more complex campaign, Mautic's visual campaign editor makes it easy for you to quickly create workflows. Campaigns can be triggered when leads are added to a list, or when leads submit a certain form. Leads can be added to other campaigns from within a campaign, too. Delay times may be specified, and the system can even be configured to push a lead onto a campaign when their Points total hits a certain value. Basically the system is very flexible and allows you a nice blank canvas on which to design your ultimate marketing funnel.
7. Mautic Allows You to Own Your Data Forever With Mautic, you will never be at the mercy of your payment agreement with a commercial solution provider. You own your data forever and have all rights to it. You also have full control over what you put in your email headers and footers. Obviously, you still must comply with CAN-SPAM laws and market smart. But there are no roadblocks in your way, and if you'd like you can even expand upon the code to create your own functional elements of the Mautic system. Independent development isn't something most users will take on, but it's nice to know the flexibility exists for those who do.
How to Install and Configure Mautic on Your Web Server You can find Mautic's complete support documentation on the Mautic.org website. There are three basic steps to installing and configuring Mautic:
1. Download the most recent stable release from the Mautic website. 2. Upload the included *.zip file to your server and unzip the files. 3. Navigate to that file location in your browser and follow the on-screen instructions.
Beyond this, there are a few more steps to ensure a proper configuration. Let's look at these one by one.
A. Setup CRON Jobs If you aren't familiar with CRON jobs, web server management, php, or scripts, don't worry. I wasn't either when I got started with Mautic and it took me less than an hour to figure it out - from scratch. In most web hosting accounts you'll find the CRON job manager in your cPanel under "Advanced" settings. Clicking on this will bring you to the CRON job manager. These are the basic CRON jobs you'll need to setup on your server for Mautic to work correctly:
To update Lead Lists: php /path/to/mautic/app/console mautic:leadlists:update To update Campaigns: php /path/to/mautic/app/console mautic:campaigns:update To trigger Campaigns: php /path/to/mautic/app/console mautic:campaigns:trigger
For those of you total noobs out there (like me), please realize the "/path/to" part of this code needs to be replaced with YOUR unique file path from your web host. You will need to navigate to your cPanel and into your File Manager to determine exactly what yours looks like.
Finally, if you choose to Queue your email (rather than send immediately), which is advisable if you're working with lead lists of any size or volume, you'll also need to setup the following CRON job:
To trigger Queued Emails: php /path/to/mautic/app/console mautic:email:process
Notes: On Bluehost, the proper php call format is not just "php" but rather "php-cli." This took me a few minutes of head scratching to figure out, but don't worry - if your CRON jobs aren't working, this may be the reason why. Hence the proper format for Bluehost is php-cli /path/to/mautic/app/console mautic:item:action
Furthermore, you may need to "force" certain CRON jobs by appending the operator "-f" to the end of your php calls. This looks like: php-cli /path/to/mautic/app/console mautic:item:action -f
B. Setup IP Tracking From within the Mautic - Configuration menu, I've been using the Freegeoip.net service without needing to setup or configure much of anything. It's been working effectively to track and identify my leads. There are a number of available services you can use for this, though - it's worth getting one working so you know where your leads are coming from.
C. Install Your Tracking Pixel The format for the Mautic tracking pixel, which you can install on some or all pages of your website is:

Remember to replace the yourdomain.com/path/to info with YOUR domain and file path information, or the pixel will not work. This will be obvious to some but not obvious to others. The tracking pixel is very helpful because it allows you to leverage Mautic's world-map dashboard to see visually where your leads are coming from. Furthermore, it allows you to see exactly who is accessing what pages of your site and when.
By the way, if you are using WordPress there is a plugin available to help you with this.
That's it! Now enjoy your install of Mautic. At this point, you'll need to go into your dashboard and configure your workflows, template emails, point scoring rules, and the like. But the above steps are the only ones you'll need to take in order to setup the Mautic system in the first place. Even though some of the final steps are a bit technical, they are pretty easy for anyone willing to dive in and get their hands dirty for a few minutes.
